Organic farming to preserve water quality?Comparison of three emblematic cases of successful management of drinking water catchment area Organic Eprints
Barataud, Fabienne; Aubry, C.; Wezel, A.; Mundler, P.; Fleury, Philippe.
Protecting water resources from pollutants generated by agricultural activities is becoming more strictly regulated in Europe today, with an obligation to achieveresults. This means that towns willing to improve quality of their domestic water supply are required to regulate farmers’ practices in the water catchment areas. In this paper, we studied three cases (Munich and Augsburg in Germany, and Lons-le-Saunier in France) often listed as successful initiatives/ experiences of preservation of water quality by local authorities that have developed coordination with farmers. In this paper, we carried out a comparative analysis of the construction of city-farmer agreements, based on in-depth surveys and with a particular focus on the role of conversion to...

Can water quality problems motivate conventional farmers to convert to organic farming? Organic Eprints
Vincent, Audrey; Fleury, Philippe.
Recently, the conservation of water resources has become a major issue because of the increasing problems of water pollutions by agriculture. In this context, organic farming (OF) is seen by some institutions as a promising solution for responding to this problem because of its regulation that prohibits the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Recent policies in France have focussed on promoting OF development, especially in water catchments’ areas contaminated by pesticides. Our hypothesis is that the existence of a water quality problem locally can be a motivation for conventional farmers to convert to OF. This research is based on 65 farmers’ interviews (mainly conventional farmers and a few farmers who recently converted to OF) that were carried...

Localized organic agri-food supply chains in Rhône-Alpes (France): diversity of organisations and highlights of the notion of proximity Organic Eprints
Chazoule, Carole; Fleury, Philippe; Vitrolles, D..
For ten years, innovative forms of distribution of organic products have emerged between long and short supply chains. They are often defined as "localized agrifood systems". We based this work on the analysis of 18 localized agrifood systems in the Rhône-Alpes region (France). First, it presents the dynamics of construction and organization of these agrifood systems: diversity of actors involved, relationships between actors and rules that have been gradually established. We used the concept of geographical and relational proximity to analyse these supply chains and to highlight the mechanisms implemented to address the limits of short supply chains, particularly an increasing number of intermediaries. Then we assessed their performances with regard to...

A localised development of organic farming as a response to the problem of water quality: a new challenge Organic Eprints
Vincent, A; Fleury, Philippe.
Initiatives aiming at developing organic farming (OF) to meet water quality stakes are increasing. This article is a comparative study of four such projects. It is based on semi-structured interviews. Two logics for public action are implemented to foster the development of OF in areas facing water quality problems. The first one aims at concentrating actions in water sensitive areas. The main tool that is then mobilized is the use of localized agri-environmental measures supporting conversion to organic farming. The second logic aims at implementing actions for organic development at a geographical scale considered as relevant for developing OF and differing from water sensitive areas. The main actions that are then activated are coordination,...
