Impact of reduced tillage on soil organic carbon and nutrient budgets under organic farming Organic Eprints
Gadermaier, Florian; Berner, Alfred; Fließbach, Andreas; Friedel, Jürgen Kurt; Mäder, Paul.
No-tillage (NT) and reduced tillage (RT) systems are well-known management tools for reducing soil erosion and improving soil fertility. NT and RT may improve the environmental and economic performance of organic farming, but they are still not common practice among organic farmers. This paper presents the effects of tillage [RT versus conventional tillage (CT)], fertilization (slurry versus manure compost) and biodynamic preparations (with versus without) on soil fertility indicators such as soil organic carbon (Corg), microbial biomass and microbial activity, soil nutrients and nutrient budgets in an organic farming system during the first six-year crop rotation period of a long-term experiment on a clayey soil in a temperate climate. RT caused...

How effective are ‘Effective microorganisms® (EM)’? Results from a field study in temperate climate Organic Eprints
Mayer, Jochen; Scheid, Susanne; Widmer, Franco; Fließbach, Andreas; Oberholzer, Hans-Rudolf.
Effective microorganisms® (EM) is a microbial inoculant promoted to stimulate plant growth and soil fertility in agriculture. In our study we investigated the effects of EM on crop yields and soil microbial parameters in a 4-year field experiment under organic management (2003–2006) in Zurich, Switzerland. Treatments of the EM preparations (i) the spraying agent EMA, (ii) EMA with the EM enriched organic substrate Bokashi and (iii) EMA with Bokashi and farmyard manure were applied in each year. As controls to treatments (i)–(iii) the same treatments were included with sterilised EM preparations and a control without EM application. Crop yields in each year and the soil microbiological parameters soil respiration, microbial biomass (SIR, CFE), dehydrogenase...

P. fluorescens is used in agriculture and horticulture as a plant growth promoting rhizobacterium. It colonizes root surfaces effectively and excretes compounds that are influencing plant nutrient uptake and plant health. Soils with different initial biological fertility were analysed 18 and 60 days after inoculating the freshly sown wheat plants with a suspension of a rifampicine tolerant strain of P. fluorescens CHA0, in order to evaluate its survival and lasting effect on soil microbial biomass. P. fluorescens had a lasting effect in soils with low initial biomass, but no lasting effects were found in biologically active soils.

Klimaneutraler Acker- und Gemüsebau - Auswirkungen von reduzierter Bodenbearbeitung und Gründüngungen auf Bodenfruchtbarkeit, Klima und Ökonomie – bisherige Erkenntnisse und aktuelle Versuche Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Berner, Alfred; Fließbach, Andreas; Messmer, Monika; Koller, Martin; Weibel, Franco; Stolze, Matthias; Schader, Christian; Sanders, Jürn; Dierauer, Hansueli; Clerc, Maurice.

Effects of conventionally bred and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) maize varieties on soil microbial biomass and activity Organic Eprints
Fließbach, Andreas; Messmer, Monika; Nietlispach, Bruno; Infante, Valentina; Mäder, Paul.
Genetically modified (GM) maize containing genes from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was cultivated on 29% of the total maize production area worldwide in 2009. Most studies to date compare Bt- maize varieties with their near isogenic lines; however, there is little information on the variability of conventional maize breeding lines and how the effects of Bt varieties are ranked within. In our study on the potential risks of Bt- maize varieties, we analyzed tissue quality and compared the effects of ten conventional and GM maize varieties on soil microbiological properties in a replicated climate chamber experiment. All maize varieties were cultivated twice in the same soil microcosm. Shoot yields and soluble C in leaf tissue of Bt...

Estimation by PLFA of Microbial Community Structure Associated with the Rhizosphere of Lygeum spartum and Piptatherum miliaceum Growing in Semiarid Mine Tailings Organic Eprints
Carrasco, Lucía; Gattinger, Andreas; Fließbach, Andreas; Roldán, Antonio; Schloter, Michael; Caravaca, Fuensanta.
The objective of this study was to compare the microbial community composition and biomass associated with the rhizosphere of a perennial gramineous species (Lygeum spartum L.) with that of an annual (Piptatherum miliaceum L.), both growing in semiarid mine tailings. We also established their relationship with the contents of potentially toxic metals as well as with indicators of soil quality. The total phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) amount was significantly higher in the rhizosphere soil of the annual species than in the rhizosphere soil of the perennial species. The fungal/bacterial PLFA ratio was significantly greater in the perennial species compared to the annual species. The fatty acid 16:1ω5c, the fungal/bacterial PLFA ratio and...

The Ins and Outs of Organic Farming. FiBL response to the letter of Goklany in Science Vol 298 Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Fließbach, Andreas; Dubois, David; Gunst, Lucie; Fried, Padrout; Niggli, Urs.
Goklany stated that 20 % lower crop yields in organic farming would require 25 % more land use to produce the same amount of crop biomass, offsetting some of the advantages of organic agriculture with respect to biological diversity, inputs, and soil erosion, and that the experimental yields are not typical. Furthermore, he indicates that organic farming might not be sufficient to feed the world.

Relation between soil organic matter and yield levels of nonlegume crops in organic and conventional farming systems Organic Eprints
Brock, Christopher; Fließbach, Andreas; Oberholzer, Hans-Rudolf; Schulz, Franz; Wiesinger, Klaus; Reinicke, Frank; Koch, Wernfried; Pallutt, Bernhard; Dittman, Bärbel; Zimmer, Jörg; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen; Leithold, Günter.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the interaction between yield levels of nonleguminous crops and soil organic matter (SOM) under the specific conditions of organic and conventional farming, respectively, and to identify implications for SOM management in arable farming considering the farming system (organic vs. conventional). For that purpose, correlations between yield levels of nonlegume crops and actual SOM level (Corg, Nt, Chwe, Nhwe) as well as SOM-level development were examined including primary data from selected treatments of seven long-term field experiments in Germany and Switzerland. Yield levels of nonlegume crops were positively correlated with SOM levels, but the correlation was significant only under conditions of organic farming, and...

Ausserdem erfolgte...

Short- and long-term effects on soil microorganisms of two potato pesticide spraying sequences with either glufosinate or dinoseb as defoliants Organic Eprints
Fließbach, Andreas; Mäder, Paul.
Pesticides applied to potatoes in Swiss integrated farming were evaluated with respect to their cumulative effects on soil microorganisms in a study performed under controlled conditions. Potatoes were treated with a series of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides and were finally defoliated either by hand in the untreated control or with the total herbicides Basta (active ingredient glufosinate) or Super Kabrol (active ingredient dinoseb). Twenty-one and 135 days after the last pesticide application soil samples were collected and analysed for microbial biomass, activity and community level substrate utilisation (CLSU). In the short-term, cumulative pesticide side-effects on microbial biomass and microbial activities averaged 19% for the spraying...

Reply to Leifeld et al.: Enhanced top soil carbon stocks under organic farming is not equated with climate change mitigation Organic Eprints
Gattinger, Andreas; Müller, Adrian; Haeni, Matthias; Skinner, Colin; Fließbach, Andreas; Buchmann, Nina; Mäder, Paul; Stolze, Matthias; Smith, Pete; El-Hage Scialabbad, Nadja; Niggli, Urs.
In their letter, Leifeld et al. (1) argue that our metaanalysis to identify differences in soil organic carbon (SOC) between organic (OF) and nonorganic farming [conventional farming (CF)] (2) selected CF systems that were nonrepresentative. This was not the case. We included data from all available pairwise field comparisons between OF and CF identified in the literature. The observed difference in external carbon (C) inputs between OF and CF did not result from a bias in the selection of studies/treatments but was attributable to the fact that the field comparisons we analyzed (2) were not from fertilization experiments but from pairwise farming system comparisons where the design and the underlying treatments reflected the current farming practices in...

Reduzierte Bodenbearbeitung reichert Humus und mikrobielle Biomasse oberflächlich an Organic Eprints
Fließbach, Andreas; Krauss, Maike; Maurer, C.; Dierauer, Hansueli; Mäder, Paul.
When residues and organic fertilizers are not incorporated into the soil, they build a top soil layer that is enriched in soil organic matter. This is leading to a soil layer with increased biological activity, while the soil layers below, receive less inputs in form of residues or manures and show a reduction in soil organic matter and biological activity. Soils from a replicated field trial and two on-farm trials were analysed for biological soil quality 6 years after the implementation of reduced tillage (RT) as compared to plough. Whilst crop yields were slightly lower with RT, weed cover was increasing, but not to a level that would compromise yields. Soils under RT accumulated soil organic matter in the tilled top layer of 0-10 cm, while in the...

Variability of soil fertility and crop yield on a sandy field site in western Poland under bio-dynamic management" Organic Eprints
Fließbach, Andreas; Baars, Ton; Huisman, Sebastiaan; Jorgas, Thorsten; Lewandowska-Robak, Maja; Strässer, Cornelius; Mäder, Paul.
Variability of crop yield and soil quality was analysed before the start of a field experiment on a bio-dynmaic farm in Western Poland. The field site showed two zones of contrasting soil quality that partly correlated with crop yields. The procedure allowed to define high and low yielding zones and was suitable to design a balanced comparison trial.

Soil organic carbon cycling in a long-term agricultural experiment,Switzerland Organic Eprints
Bliedtner, Marcel; Stalder, Tobias; Mäder, Paul; Fließbach, Andreas; Salazar, Gary; Sönke, Szidat; Zech, Roland.
Soils are one of the largest organic carbon pools and changes in the carbon release from soils has considerable impact on the composition of atmospheric CO2. Alongside the accelerated carbon release from soils by anthro-pogenic warming (Crowther et al., 2016), agricultural use strongly affects soil organic carbon (SOC) (Johnstonet al., 2009). Conversion from conventional to organic farming has been suggested a valuable contribution to sequester SOC providing a great mitigation potential within agricultural practices (Smith et al., 2008).Here we present SOC contents and 14C activity under two different farming practices in the long-termagricultural DOK trial at Therwil, Switzerland (Mäder et al., 2002). In this long-lasting agricultural experiment, we...
