DISTANCE EDUCATION IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS: AN ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT ACCEPTANCE AND PERFORMANCE. AgEcon
Batte, Marvin T.; Forster, D. Lynn; Larson, Donald W..
This paper reports an analysis of student evaluation of and performance in three agricultural economics classes offered at distance by audio-visual connection in real time. Multiple regression analyses of student questionnaire data are used to examine the relationship between student attributes and their evaluation of and performance in the distance-offered course.

UPDATING CORN PROGRAM PAYMENT YIELDS: ARE FARM OPERATORS DIFFERENTIALLY AFFECTED? AgEcon
Thayer, Sharon; Zulauf, Carl R.; Schnitkey, Gary D.; Forster, D. Lynn.
Crop yields which determine farm income deficiency payments have been frozen at 1981-1985 levels since 1986. Data from a longitudinal survey of Ohio farm operators are analyzed to evaluate whether updating payment yields will differentially affect farm operators. Results of the analysis imply that farm operators who operate larger farms, live in counties with higher yields, and have higher fertilizer and pesticide expenses per acre of corn will benefit more. In addition, low (high) existing payment yields are understated (overstated) relative to updated payment yields.

SPATIAL DEPENDENCE AMONG COUNTY-LEVEL LAND USE CHANGES AgEcon
Hsieh, Wen-Hua; Irwin, Elena G.; Forster, D. Lynn.
Spatial econometric methods are used to investigate whether land use changes in one county are affected by changes in surrounding counties. Spatial dependence is hypothesized to arise from land substitution effects among neighboring counties. The estimation uses data on land use change for 1,055 counties of 12 Midwest states.

OPTIMAL USE OF SMOKESTACK SCRUBBER BY-PRODUCT AgEcon
Hite, Diane; Forster, D. Lynn; Rausch, Jon.
Federal legislation mandates substantial reduction of air pollution emissions from electric utilities. Utilities in Appalachia that use locally mined high-sulfur coal must choose among abatement options such as fuel mixing and smokestack scrubbing technologies. Wet scrubbers are the most frequently adopted abatement technology in Ohio. This paper investigates beneficial reuses of by-product from wet scrubbers. By-product is most often disposed of in landfills, resulting in large external costs. We combine social cost and benefit transfers with a linear optimization model to investigate potential benefits of by-product recycling. Results suggest that significant incentives exist to find beneficial uses for by-product.
