Características anatomoclínicas dos linfomas caninos na região de Botucatu, São Paulo Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Sequeira,J.L.; Franco,M.; Bandarra,E.P.; Figueiredo,L.M.A.; Rocha,N.S..
A forma tímica,...

Expression of CD40 ligand, interferon-gamma and Fas ligand genes in endomyocardial biopsies of human cardiac allografts: correlation with acute rejection BJMBR
Shulzhenko,N.; Morgun,A.; Franco,M.; Souza,M.M.; Almeida,D.R.; Diniz,R.V.Z.; Carvalho,A.C.C.; Pacheco-Silva,A.; Gerbase-DeLima,M..
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the expression (mRNA) of CD40 ligand (CD40L), interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and Fas ligand (FasL) genes in human cardiac allografts in relation to the occurrence of acute cardiac allograft rejection as well as its possible value in predicting acute rejection. The mRNA levels were determined by a semiquantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction method in 39 samples of endomyocardial biopsies obtained from 10 adult cardiac transplant recipients within the first six months after transplantation. Biopsies with ongoing acute rejection showed significantly higher CD40L, IFN-gamma and FasL mRNA expression than biopsies without rejection. The median values of mRNA expression in biopsies with and...

Immunoexpression of cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 in ulcerative colitis BJMBR
Paiotti,A.P.R.; Artigiani Neto,R.; Forones,N.M.; Oshima,C.T.F.; Miszputen,S.J.; Franco,M..
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a disease of the colon and rectum characterized by a nonspecific chronic inflammation mediated by the concerted response of cellular and humoral events. Prostaglandins are synthesized by cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and -2 and exhibit both pro- and anti-inflammatory activity. To evaluate COX-1 and COX-2 immunoexpression in 42 cases of UC and to correlate it with clinicopathological parameters, COX-1 and COX-2 expression was investigated by the immunohistochemistry method. Only patients with all pertinent clinical and evolutive data as well as with adequate biopsy material were included in the study. Fifteen samples of colorectal adenocarcinoma and 14 of large bowel with no histological changes were used for positive and negative...

Impact of initial exposure to calcineurin inhibitors on kidney graft function of patients at high risk to develop delayed graft function BJMBR
Silva,L.A.; Felipe,C.R.; Park,S.I.; Pinheiro-Machado,P.; Garcia,R.; Franco,M.; Moreira,S.R.; Tedesco-Silva Jr.,H.; Medina-Pestana,J..
We conducted a retrospective analysis of the influence of full doses of calcineurin inhibitors [8-10 mg kg-1 day-1 cyclosporine (N = 80), or 0.2-0.3 mg kg-1 day-1 tacrolimus (N = 68)] administered from day 1 after transplantation on the transplant outcomes of a high-risk population. Induction therapy was used in 13% of the patients. Patients also received azathioprine (2 mg kg-1 day-1, N = 58) or mycophenolate mofetil (2 g/day, N = 90), and prednisone (0.5 mg kg-1 day-1, N = 148). Mean time on dialysis was 79 ± 41 months, 12% of the cases were re-transplants, and 21% had panel reactive antibodies >10%. In 43% of donors the cause of death was cerebrovascular disease and 27% showed creatinine above 1.5 mg/dL. The incidence of slow graft function (SGF) and...

Myocyte necrosis is the basis for fibrosis in renovascular hypertensive rats BJMBR
Okoshi,M.P.; Matsubara,L.S.; Franco,M.; Cicogna,A.C.; Matsubara,B.B..
The pathogenesis of fibrosis and the functional features of pressure overload myocardial hypertrophy are still controversial. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the function and morphology of the hypertrophied myocardium in renovascular hypertensive (RHT) rats. Male Wistar rats were sacrificed at week 4 (RHT4) and 8 (RHT8) after unilateral renal ischemia (Goldblatt II hypertension model). Normotensive rats were used as controls. Myocardial function was analyzed in isolated papillary muscle preparations, morphological features were defined by light microscopy, and myocardial hydroxyproline concentration (HOP) was determined by spectrophotometry. Renal artery clipping resulted in elevated systolic arterial pressure (RHT4: 178 ± 19 mmHg and...

Effect of felodipine on myocardial and renal injury induced by aldosterone-high salt hypertension in uninephrectomized rats BJMBR
Matsubara,B.B.; Franco,M.; Janicki,J.S.; Matsubara,L.S..
It has been recently shown that calcium channel blockers might have a protective effect on cardiac fibrogenesis induced by aldosterone. The objective of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of felodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, against heart and kidney damage caused by aldosterone-high sodium intake in uninephrectomized rats. Wistar rats were divided into three groups: CNEP (uninephrectomized + 1% NaCl in the drinking water, N = 9); ALDO (same as CNEP group plus continuous infusion of 0.75 µg/h aldosterone, N = 12); ALDOF (same as ALDO group plus 30 mg·kg-1·day-1 felodipine in the drinking water, N = 10). All results were compared with those of age-matched, untreated rats (CTL group, N = 10). After 6 weeks, tail cuff blood...

Preservation of graft function in low-risk living kidney transplant recipients treated with a combination of sirolimus and cyclosporine BJMBR
Machado,P.G.P.; Felipe,C.R.; Park,S.I.; Garcia,R.; Moreira,S.; Casarini,D.; Franco,M.; Alfieri,F.; Tedesco-Silva Jr.,H.; Medina-Pestana,J.O..
The use of sirolimus (SRL) in combination with full doses of cyclosporin A (CsA) results in reduced one-year kidney allograft function, which is associated with shorter long-term allograft survival. We determined the effect of reduced CsA exposure on graft function in patients receiving SRL and prednisone. Ninety recipients of living kidney transplants receiving SRL (2 mg/day, po) were compared to 35 recipients receiving azathioprine (AZA, 2 mg kg-1 day-1, po). All patients also received CsA (8-10 mg kg-1 day-1, po) and prednisone (0.5 mg kg-1 day-1). Efficacy end-point was a composite of biopsy-confirmed acute rejection, graft loss, or death at one year. Graft function was measured by creatinine, creatinine clearance, and graft function deterioration...
