| This article is a study of phisionomic biogeography. It describes the vegetation (trees and forests, scrubs, grasslands, brazilian savannas, etc.) on the “Vale do Paraíba paulista” (East of the São Paulo state, Brazil, South America) in two periods – 1817, when the vegetation conditions were primitive, and 2007, when the vegetation conditions are very different. It describes yet, the historic process of occupation in this area and the modification of the natural formations. The work of the two german naturalists - Spix & Martius - and field works was utilized for the knowledge of the vegetation conditions.
