How consumers link traceability to food quality and safety: An international investigation AgEcon
van Rijswijk, Wendy; Frewer, Lynn J..
It is not yet understood whether the implementation of traceability systems can contribute towards restoring consumer confidence in food quality and safety, one of the goals of the European Food Law. To date, little is known about how consumers perceive the role and potential impact of traceability within the supply chain. This paper aims to provide insight into how traceability information can offer guarantees of food quality and safety, and contribute towards increased consumer confidence. Data, collected in four EU countries, examines salient cognitions and attitudes that underpin consumer beliefs about product traceability that will influence their decision making. This paper aims to gain insights into the information preferences of food allergic consumers regarding existing food labelling and additional information delivery systems. The results of this study will facilitate the development of best practices in...

de Jonge, Janneke; van Trijp, J.C.M.; Renes, Reint Jan; van der Lans, Ivo A.C.M.; Frewer, Lynn J..
Many consumers lack insight into today’s complex food production systems. This paper investigates the relationship between consumer confidence in the safety of food in general and consumer trust in particular institutions and organisations. The first aim of the study was to develop and validate a scale to measure general consumer confidence in the safety of food. From the analysis, two distinct dimensions emerged that were labelled ‘optimism’ and ‘pessimism’. The second aim of this study was to investigate to what extent general consumer confidence in the safety of food was related to consumer trust in institutions and organisations responsible for the management of food safety, taking into account three underlying dimensions of trust, namely competence,...
