Intensive agricultural technologies introduced in Africa some six decades ago paved the way for extensive land clearing and destruction of organic materials, development of high yielding crop varieties under monoculture and replacement of landraces. Si-multaneously, pesticides and antibiotics for use in agricultural pest and disease control were being developed and soon the face of agriculture was transformed by what was termed the Green Revolution. However, the apparent success accruing from such heavy investment was short-lived since the system would easily succumb to soil erosion, reduced soil organic matter, environmental pollution and pest and disease outbreaks. The inevitable result is the inability of land to sustain food productivity and worsening... |

Infections with diseases like black scurf (Rhizoctonia solani) and common scab (Strep-tomyces scabies) cause tuber blemishes. In addition, black scurf has an adverse impact on tuber yield, size and shape. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of combinations of main and catch crops on tuber yield, quality and sanitary status. The tested variants were: var. 1: pea without a catch crop apart from volunteer peas, var. 2: pea with a catch crop consisting of white mustard, California bluebell and volunteer peas, var. 3: oat without a catch crop, var. 4: oat with an underseed of white clover. Although in the variants tested no significant difference was achieved for tuber yield, disease occurrence and degree of infection with black scurf and common scab,... |

About 8.8 % (UBA 2010) of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Austria are caused by agricultural practices. Besides the release of climate relevant gases, C-sequestration occurs depending on the natural conditions and farming system. The focus of the project was to describe the GHG-emissions and sinks of the most relevant farming types, both organic and conventional, within the main production areas in Austria. Results of an intensively cultivated region in the North-West are presented. Based on the input data, six model-farms were created with the programme REPRO, whereby forage production, cash crops and refinement systems were considered. All systems had a positive humus balance and sequestered carbon in the soil, especially forage... |

A written standardised questionnaire registering attitudes, intentions, opinions, wishes, social norms etc. (45 items) was handed out to 259 pupils in six Agricultural colleges in autumn 2003. There is a highly significant correlation between the visited colleges and attitudes towards organic farming (Chi-Quadrat p<0,004). The attitude of the parents towards organic farming influences significantly that of the students. Girls do have a more positive approach towards organic farming. |

In a world where more and more organic products are mass produced, and where most consumers have little – if any – contact with the organic farmers who have produced their food, many people feel that the underlying principles of the organic movement are coming under threat. According to our research consumers are mostly interested in additional ethical attributes like “higher animal welfare standards”, “regional/local production” and “fair producer prices” and they are willing to pay more for organic products which are produced following these higher standards. This gives producers the opportunity to differentiate their products in the organic market. When communicating these additional ethical attributes of organic food producers must take care to use a... |

In times of rapid growth of the organic sector, efforts are made to define and strengthen organic values. A prominent example are the IFOAM-principles, which form the basis for ethical commitment in context with organic farming, without being fully integrated into organic regulations. This article addresses the question which ethical and other activities are practised in organic farms and companies that go beyond the regulations and if and how these activities are communicated to consumers. The survey encompasses 100 farms and companies in five European countries (Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Switzerland). After a descriptive analysis of the farms and companies, the background and use of communication arguments is explored. Finally, a... |

The effect of continuous organic farming (OF) on the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) was investigated in a greenhouse pot trial. Representative soil samples were taken from 5 farms in the “Weinviertel” region, northeast of Vienna, Austria. On each farm three sites with a different duration of OF were selected for soil sampling; wheat was used as test plant. The mycorrhizal colonization (MC), root length density (RD) and the mycorrhizal colonized root length density (MD) were evaluated for the wheat roots. The majority of the wheat plants indicated an increasing MC and MD with increasing duration of OF. Based on our results we assume that a conversion period from conventional to OF of approximately 15 years is needed... |

Fodder legumes, like lucerne, make a significant contribution to a positive humus balance and nitrogen supply on organic farms. To determine the required lucerne percentage to meet these targets, several shares of lucerne were modelled on the basis of empirical data of an eight-field crop rotation. The lower limit for ensuring optimum humus and nitrogen supply in this rotation was approximately 17 % lucerne. The calculation of the data was performed with the agricultural software REPRO. |

In times of rapid growth of the organic market and differentiation processes within the sector, efforts are made on different levels to (re)define and strengthen organic values. The normative part of this process is the reformulation of IFOAM-principles, which form the basis for ethical commitment within the organic movement, without being fully integrated into organic regulations. This article addresses the question of which ethical activities are practised on organic farms and by organic companies that go beyond the organic regulations (referred to as "organicPlus" in this study), with what arguments these activities are communicated to consumers and how they are related to the dimensions of sustainability. The survey encompasses 100 small and... |

The main source of nitrogen in organic farming is biological nitrogen fixation, the result of a symbiosis between legumes and nodulating bacteria. Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) is the most biomass efficient forage legume under the semiarid conditions in East-ern Austria. Farmers inquired about information on the best site-adapted lucerne variety, but knowledge about water use and productivity of different lucerne varieties in organic farming is sparse. From 2005-2006, four lucerne varieties were studied with respect to above- and below-ground biomass production, biological nitrogen fixation and water use. The aim of this study was to find first practical criteria for farmers to choose lucerne varieties for green manure use, adapted to the dry region in the... |
