Although the market for organic products has been growing in Austria for a few years, the rising competition of so called regional, natural or sustainable products should be taken seriously. One solution in times of “conventionalisation” of organic farming could be higher ethical standards in organic farming and more effective communication of ethical values, as it has already been practised by a great number of medium-sized and large enterprises under the name of “Corporate Social Responsibility” (CSR). CSR refers to all services that are beyond legal requirements, performed on a voluntary basis. This article discusses the topic CSR and similar approaches in the Austrian organic sector on the basis of 30 interviews with Austrian organic farmers and... |

In a world where more and more organic products are mass produced, and where most consumers have little – if any – contact with the organic farmers who have produced their food, many people feel that the underlying principles of the organic movement are coming under threat. According to our research consumers are mostly interested in additional ethical attributes like “higher animal welfare standards”, “regional/local production” and “fair producer prices” and they are willing to pay more for organic products which are produced following these higher standards. This gives producers the opportunity to differentiate their products in the organic market. When communicating these additional ethical attributes of organic food producers must take care to use a... |

The main source of nitrogen in organic farming is biological nitrogen fixation, the result of a symbiosis between legumes and nodulating bacteria. Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) is the most biomass efficient forage legume under the semiarid conditions in East-ern Austria. Farmers inquired about information on the best site-adapted lucerne variety, but knowledge about water use and productivity of different lucerne varieties in organic farming is sparse. From 2005-2006, four lucerne varieties were studied with respect to above- and below-ground biomass production, biological nitrogen fixation and water use. The aim of this study was to find first practical criteria for farmers to choose lucerne varieties for green manure use, adapted to the dry region in the... |

On organic farms, phosphorus (P) balances are often negative because no or little P is imported into the farms. Negative P balances may deteriorate P availability over time. We calculated P balances of the main farm production types in organic farming for the main Austrian production areas. Using data from various data bases and expert knowledge, we applied the sustainability assessment tool REPRO for calculations. The P balances were balanced to slightly deficient for organic forage dairy farms, cash crop farms and permanent crop farms, and slightly to highly surplus on organic refinement, pig producing farms. Deficient P balances, mainly on organic cash crop farms, call for P input especially on farms where available P fractions in the soil are very low... |

Biogas production is a key technology for sustainable use of biomass from agricultural production. An optimisation of biogas production from energy crops should not confine to the consideration of the biogas process. To assure a durable success, cropping of energy plants has to be designed according to the principles of sustainable crop rota-tions. Only in site-adapted and ecologically balanced crop rotation systems, energy crop production is meaningful. The general aim of this study was to develope site-adapted crop rotation systems including energy crops as main and catch crops. Study regions were chosen to represent large regions of Austria. To include a great share of the crop species relevant for Austria, sites from the dry region (NUTS III region... |

Infections with diseases like black scurf (Rhizoctonia solani) and common scab (Strep-tomyces scabies) cause tuber blemishes. In addition, black scurf has an adverse impact on tuber yield, size and shape. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of combinations of main and catch crops on tuber yield, quality and sanitary status. The tested variants were: var. 1: pea without a catch crop apart from volunteer peas, var. 2: pea with a catch crop consisting of white mustard, California bluebell and volunteer peas, var. 3: oat without a catch crop, var. 4: oat with an underseed of white clover. Although in the variants tested no significant difference was achieved for tuber yield, disease occurrence and degree of infection with black scurf and common scab,... |

In times of rapid growth of the organic market and differentiation processes within the sector, efforts are made on different levels to (re)define and strengthen organic values. The normative part of this process is the reformulation of IFOAM-principles, which form the basis for ethical commitment within the organic movement, without being fully integrated into organic regulations. This article addresses the question of which ethical activities are practised on organic farms and by organic companies that go beyond the organic regulations (referred to as "organicPlus" in this study), with what arguments these activities are communicated to consumers and how they are related to the dimensions of sustainability. The survey encompasses 100 small and... |

This article deals with ethical activities that are going beyond the organic regulations (referred to as 'organicPlus' in this study) and their communication strategies practised by organic farms and enterprises. The results are based on a qualitative survey of 100 organic small and medium-sized enterprises/farms in five European countries. Their engagement can be perceived in a certain sense as an opposite trend of the ongoing conventionalisation process in the organic sector. The organicPlus activities are related to the three classical sustainability dimensions extended by a cultural dimension. All enterprises/farms represent unique approaches with more or less professional communication strategies and a local or regional orientation. Therefore they... |
