Fertile soils are highly important for arable farming. To maintain soil fertility, crop rotation including legumes is applied, particularly in stockless farms. Yet, many commercial farms report yield reductions for legumes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the causes for the observed soil fatigue can be narrowed down by a bioassay (modified differential diagnosis according to Bouhot) and whether this bioassay could be a useful tool to predict the suitability of a field to grow legumes. |

Composts can influence soil fertility and plant health. These influences can be positive or negative, depending of the quality of the composts. In order to estimate the potential of Swiss composts to influence soil fertility and plant health, one hundred composts representative of the different composting systems and qualities available on the market were analyzed. The organic substance and the nutrient content of the composts varied greatly between the composts; the materials of origin were the major factor influencing these values. The respiration rate and enzyme activities also varied greatly, particularly in the youngest composts. These differences decreased when the composts become more mature. Maturity, the degradation stage of the organic matter,... |

The impact of soil type, long-term soil management, and short-term fertility input strategies on the suppressiveness of soils against soil-borne (Ocimum basilicum – Rhizoctonia solani, Lepidium sativum – Pythium ultimum) as well as air-borne (Lycopersicon esculentum – Phytophthora infestans, Arabidopsis thaliana – Hyaloperonospora parasitica) diseases was studied. Soils from field trials established in five European sites with contrasting pedo-climatic conditions were examined. Sites included (i) a long-term management field trial comparing organic and conventional farming systems (DOK-trial, Therwil, Switzerland) (ii) a short-term fertility input field trial comparing mineral and organic matter fertilisation regimes (Bonn (BON), Germany) (iii) two... |

Numerous microorganisms are involved in the composting process, but their precise roles are often unknown. Compost microorganisms are influenced by the composition of the substrate and by the temperature in the compost pile. In addition, different microorganisms also influence each other, e.g. through competition. In the first phase of composting, microbial activity increase drastically, leading to a rise in temperature. The initial bacterial dominance is replaced by a fungal one during compost maturation. (c) Springer Verlag, Berlin Heidelberg |

This proceedings volume contains the papers presented at the CODIS 2008 congress held on 27 - 29 February 2008 in Solothurn (Switzerland). The composting and digestion of biogenic waste materials and the subsequent application of compost and digestate to soil contributes to nutrient recycling and renewable energy production. Moreover, compost and digestate can improve soil fertility and suppress plant diseases. On the other hand, compost and digestate may also contain a variety of pollutants hazardous to soil, such as heavy metals and organic contaminants.Compost and digestate have been thoroughly investigated in the framework of two associated projects entitled Organic Pollutants in Compost and Digestate in Switzerland and Effects of Composts and Digestate... |

Damping-off of spinach, caused by soil-borne pathogens, is one of the most serious problems in organic spinach production. To overcome these problems soil amendments based on specific strains of micro-organisms or based on organic material are proposed. In pot experiments under controlled conditions 14 microbial strains and six organic soil amendments were tested on their ability to suppress soil borne diseases and to improve plant stand establishment. In a subsequent field experiment with the best treatments, soil amendments with compost showed the best effect while products based on single strains of micro-organisms failed to improve plant stand establishment. It is concluded that under high disease pressure a diverse population of microorganisms as it... |
