Differenzialdiagnose: Eine Methode zur Ursacheneingrenzung bei Bodenmüdigkeit Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Bruns, Christian; Mäder, Paul; Schmidt, Harald; Thürig, Barbara; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Tamm, Lucius.
Fertile soils are highly important for arable farming. To maintain soil fertility, crop rotation including legumes is applied, particularly in stockless farms. Yet, many commercial farms report yield reductions for legumes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the causes for the observed soil fatigue can be narrowed down by a bioassay (modified differential diagnosis according to Bouhot) and whether this bioassay could be a useful tool to predict the suitability of a field to grow legumes.

Die Wirkung von Myco-Sin gegen den Apfelschorf in Abhängigkeit der Schwefelformulierung Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Amsler, Thomas; Böger, N.; Fuchs, Jacques G..

Influence of compost and digestates on plant growth and health: potentials and limits Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Berner, Alfred; Mayer, Jochen; Smidt, Ena; Schleiss, Konrad.
Composts can influence soil fertility and plant health. These influences can be positive or negative, depending of the quality of the composts. In order to estimate the potential of Swiss composts to influence soil fertility and plant health, one hundred composts representative of the different composting systems and qualities available on the market were analyzed. The organic substance and the nutrient content of the composts varied greatly between the composts; the materials of origin were the major factor influencing these values. The respiration rate and enzyme activities also varied greatly, particularly in the youngest composts. These differences decreased when the composts become more mature. Maturity, the degradation stage of the organic matter,...

Alternative Dünger im Aufwind Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G..

Interactions Between Beneficial and Harmful Microorganisms: From the Composting Process to Compost Application Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G..
Numerous microorganisms are involved in the composting process, but their precise roles are often unknown. Compost microorganisms are influenced by the composition of the substrate and by the temperature in the compost pile. In addition, different microorganisms also influence each other, e.g. through competition. In the first phase of composting, microbial activity increase drastically, leading to a rise in temperature. The initial bacterial dominance is replaced by a fungal one during compost maturation. (c) Springer Verlag, Berlin Heidelberg

Compost and digestate: sustainability, benefits, impacts for the environment and for plant production Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Kupper, Thomas; Tamm, Lucius; SCHENK, Maria.
This proceedings volume contains the papers presented at the CODIS 2008 congress held on 27 - 29 February 2008 in Solothurn (Switzerland). The composting and digestion of biogenic waste materials and the subsequent application of compost and digestate to soil contributes to nutrient recycling and renewable energy production. Moreover, compost and digestate can improve soil fertility and suppress plant diseases. On the other hand, compost and digestate may also contain a variety of pollutants hazardous to soil, such as heavy metals and organic contaminants.Compost and digestate have been thoroughly investigated in the framework of two associated projects entitled Organic Pollutants in Compost and Digestate in Switzerland and Effects of Composts and Digestate...

Organic Eprints
Meyer, Audrey; Fuchs, Jacques G.; Schärer, Hansjakob.
Damping-off of spinach, caused by soil-borne pathogens, is one of the most serious problems in organic spinach production. To overcome these problems soil amendments based on specific strains of micro-organisms or based on organic material are proposed. In pot experiments under controlled conditions 14 microbial strains and six organic soil amendments were tested on their ability to suppress soil borne diseases and to improve plant stand establishment. In a subsequent field experiment with the best treatments, soil amendments with compost showed the best effect while products based on single strains of micro-organisms failed to improve plant stand establishment. It is concluded that under high disease pressure a diverse population of microorganisms as it...

Tamm, Lucius; Amsler, Thomas; Fuchs, Jacques G.; Schärer, Hans-Jakob; Refardt, Matthias.

Fuchs, Jacques G.; Mayer, Jochen; Berner, Alfred.
One hundred Swiss composts and digestates were investigated in order to evaluate their influence on plant growth and health. Important differences in biological compost quality and on the impact on soil fertility and on plant health were observed. The most important limiting factor of compost quality is the possible immobilization of mineralized nitrogen by some composts. However, quality composts have a good potential to protect plants against diseases. More attention should be paid to the control of the composting process in order to improve the biological quality of composts with more beneficial effects on crops.

Testing peas for legume fatigue Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Conder, Malgorzarta; Weidmann, Gilles.
The method offers reference points regarding the soil's contamination with these pathogens, and thus indication for a possibly required cultivation break. Refraining from cultivating on contaminated soils helps avoid the situation of a high yield loss due to legume fatigue. Practical recommendation 1. Extract 10 litres of humid soil from the field plot you wish to examine and sieve it down to a grain size of 10 mm. 2. Moisten dry samples and mix them up evenly. 3. Fill four aluminium trays with the humid soil and store the remaining soil. 4. Cover the trays filled with soil with tinfoil and place them in the baking oven. Sterilise the samples for at least 12 hours at 70-100 °C in the oven. 5. Let the aluminium trays cool for 12 hours after...
