A Software Package and Hardware Tools for in situ Experiments in a Lagrangian Reference Frame ArchiMer
Doglioli, Andrea; Nencioli, Francesco; Petrenko, Anne; Rougier, Gilles; Fuda, Jean-luc; Grima, Nicolas.
The Lagrangian Transport Experiment (LATEX) was developed to study the influence of coupled physical and biogeochemical dynamics at the meso- and submesoscales on the transfers of matter and heat between the coastal zone and the open ocean. One of the goals of the Latex10 field experiment, conducted during September 2010 in the Gulf of Lion (northwest Mediterranean), was to mark a dynamical mesoscale feature by releasing a passive tracer [sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)] together with an array of Lagrangian buoys. The goal was to release the tracer in an initial patch as homogeneous as possible in the horizontal, and to study its turbulent mixing and dispersion while minimizing the contribution due to advection. For that, it was necessary to continuously adjust...

Time variability on hydrology and biogeochemistry induced by mesoscale eddies in the Algerian Basin: a one year high resolution and multiplatform experiment ArchiMer
Puillat Felix, Ingrid; Taupier-letage, Isabelle; Fuda, Jean-luc.
In the framework of the ELISA project (1997-1998, MAST-3/MTP/MATER program) 1-year high frequency time series were acquired at fixed points in the Algerian Basin, an open sea area of the Mediterranean sea (3000m). This multidisciplinary and multiplatform experiment was dedicated to study the algerian eddies and their influence on general circulation and on biological phenomena. During 3 main cruises, 2 specific  Anticyclonic Eddies (AEs) tracked by satellites images during 4 years were mainly studied by mean of vertical sections, performed inside AEs and in the surrounding smaller structures such as sub-mesoscale filaments and small-scale shear eddies. These sections helped describing the hydrological and biogeocheminal structures of eddies according to...

The deep ocean is the largest and least known ecosystem on Earth. It hosts numerous pelagic organisms, most of which are able to emit light. Here we present a unique data set consisting of a 2.5-year long record of light emission by deep-sea pelagic organisms, measured from December 2007 to June 2010 at the ANTARES underwater neutrino telescope in the deep NW Mediterranean Sea, jointly with synchronous hydrological records. This is the longest continuous time-series of deep-sea bioluminescence ever recorded. Our record reveals several weeks long, seasonal bioluminescence blooms with light intensity up to two orders of magnitude higher than background values, which correlate to changes in the properties of deep waters. Such changes are triggered by the...

Long-term monitoring programme of the hydrological variability in the Mediterranean Sea: a first overview of the HYDROCHANGES network ArchiMer

The long-term monitoring of basic hydrological parameters (temperature and salinity), collected as time series with adequate temporal resolution (i.e. with a sampling interval allowing the resolution of all important timescales) in key places of the Mediterranean Sea (straits and channels, zones of dense water formation, deep parts of the basins), constitute a priority in the context of global changes. This led CIESM (The Mediterranean Science Commission) to support, since 2002, the HYDROCHANGES programme (www.ciesm.org/marine/programs/hydrochanges.htm), a network of autonomous conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) sensors, deployed on mainly short and easily manageable subsurface moorings, within the core of a certain water mass. The HYDROCHANGES...

FUMSECK cruise report ArchiMer
Barrillon, Stéphanie; Bataille, Hubert; Bhairy, Nagib; Comby, Caroline; Coulon, Théo; Doglioli, Andrea; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Fuda, Jean-luc; Gregori, Gérald; Petrenko, Anne; Ricout, Anaïs; Rousselet, Louise; Thyssen, Melilotus; Tzortzis, Roxane.
The FUMSECK cruise was a one-week technological cruise, which took place in spring 2019, in the gulf of Genoa (NW Mediterranean Sea), onboard the R/V T´ethys II. Its aim was to perform several technological tests of some instruments used for the study of the fine-scale processes and dynamics. It was conducted in preparation of the BioSWOT-Med cruise in the SW Mediterranean Sea in 2022, planned as part of the “Adopt a Cross Over” initiative organising simultaneous oceanographic cruises around the world during the SWOT fast sampling phase. During FUMSECK we tested various technological innovations for the study of fine-scale dynamics and their coupling with biogeochemistry.
