Contractual Choice and Food Safety Strategy: Some Empirical Findings in Italian Poultry Sector AgEcon
Furesi, Roberto; Martino, Gaetano; Pulina, Pietro.
The analysis of contract choice is here related to the contracting nature of the hybrid governance structures. The approach of the empirical analysis is concerned with the transaction between farmers and processor in poultry supply chains and it is based upon a choice experiment to estimate the marginal values of contract attributes. Final remarks take into account the role of contract attributes in ensuring the degree of food safety and suggest a tentative organizational explanation of the degree of safety supplied. The study is funded by VI European Research Program (Strep Project “Poultryflorgut”).

Furesi, Roberto; Madau, Fabio A.; Pulina, Pietro.
Sardinia (Italy) is one of the most important European regions for sheep dairy and sheep milk cheese production. However the Sardinian sheep dairy industry is currently going through a dramatic crisis, and verifying whether it can recover part of its profitability is now a priority. Attention is now focused on estimating whether the sheep dairy firms can improve their productivity by more efficient use of their available technical resources. This paper aims to estimate technical efficiency in the Sardinian sheep dairy industry. A stochastic frontier analysis approach was used on panel data from 36 sheep dairy firms over the period 2004-2009 in order to assess whether there are some margins for technical improvements in productivity, given the existing...

HUMAN CAPITAL AND FARM HOUSEHOLDS: A MAP OF MANAGEMENT MODELS IN ITALY AgEcon
Idda, Lorenzo; Furesi, Roberto; Pulina, Pietro.
This paper is designed to verify empirically the choices that Italian farm households make when investing in human capital. Census data from the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) were used to describe the main structural and organisational characteristics of the farms. Multivariate statistical tools were used to process the information in the database, so that the different types of Italian farm households could be defined and geographically located. The results allowed us to analyse the competence endowment inside the family farm by determining the existence, the types and the strength of the relationships between the characteristics of family farms and certain variables which described the specific local environment and the human capital available...
