Candacia aithiopica Dana is a copepod whose extensive distribution, given mainly by Sewell (1947-1948) along with additional works by other authors (Wilson, 1942, 1950; Moore, 1949; Fleminger and Bowman, 1956), covers the Pacific Ocean from the Bering Sea to New Zealand, the entire Indian Ocean, the temperate and tropical zones of the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.... |

A detailed biometric study of numerous young and old specimens of Eukrohnia established that the presence of pinnules on the hooks of some individuals is significant of their youth. The fact alone that there is no coexistence, within the same specimen, of mature genitals and pinnules would be sufficient to show that serrulation does not characterise a new species of the Eukrohnia genus.... |

This note can be summarized in a few lines. It aimed to demonstrate that:1° S. setosa Müller, in its different distribution areas (North Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea), is prone to undergo some variations in its size (especially the length of its caudal segment and ovaries); variations that cannot break the unity of the species;2° S. euxina Moltshanoff can be seen as a larger S. setosa; which could be called S. setosa var. euxina because of its distribution;3° it could be confirmed that S. friderici Ritter-Zahony can be considered as a relative species of S. setosa. |

Over the past ten years, to explore the relationships between species and local hydrological conditions, I have carried out ecological studies on various zooplankton groups found in the Atlantic coast of Morocco, including chaetognaths, coelenterates (siphonophores, calycophores and jellyfish), tunicates (larvaceans and thaliaceans), crustaceans (cladocerans and mysids) and molluscs (pteropods and heteropods). I am now in a good position to give a long list of known indicators in the Gulf of Cadiz.... |

The histological study of Chaetognaths with a light microscope has been carried out, at least partially. Numerous authors, before 1900, indicated the structure of the different parts of the body, sometimes with a great precision. In 1938, KÜHL gathered in a large compilation most of the data obtained in this field. Species considered in this first stage were essentially Sagitta elegans, S. hexaptera and S. setosa. In 1957, I added S. friderici to this study, which, as expected, was very similar to other species. At about the same time, GHIRARDELLI (1956-1959) conducted various experiments on the regenerating power of Spadella cephaloptera and of Chaetognathes in general. Currently, observations are being carried out on the digestive tract of S. decipiens... |

Atlantic forms of chaetognaths have been frequently observed in various spots in the Mediterranean, appearing randomly in catches. Several authors, including ourselves, have already cited several examples: Sagitta setosa, S. fiderici, Pterosagitta draco. We will review the available data on these species and then detail two other species that were previously considered to be indigenous in the Mediterranean Sea: S. tasmanica and S. planctonis. Both were collected during cruises on the "Thor" (1905-1911). We show that they these latter two species are non-indigenous. |

This work is part of a series of studies devoted to zooplankton collected off the Atlantic coast of Morocco between 1947 and 1953. The observations reported here were recorded from 1948 to 1950. The first inventory (1957) of the Mysidacea added six new species to the lists established by Tattersall (1927) and Nouvel (1951). Since then, we discovered two other species new to Morocco and compiled some ecological data that constitutes the main subject of this paper.... |

56 samples were collected from 14 stations along the Spanish coast, the North African coast, the Balearic Islands and Sardinia. 60 species of diatoms were recorded made up mostly of tychopelagic and benthic forms; these were far more abundant than the Dinophyceae of which only 22 species were recorded. 6 species of phytoplankton were dominant and represented similar to 70% of the total samples. The average content of chlorophyll a at depths of 1-70 m was 0.35 mg /m super(3), that of chlorophyll b was 0.15 mg/m super(3) and that of chlorophyll c was 2.20 m-S.P.U./M super(3)/hour. The highest level of chlorophyll a corresponded to regions of very low phosphate levels and the number of cells and species were at a maximum for an incident light of 10-15% and at... |

Fisheries oceanography, in its use of various disciplines necessary to the study of oceans, is driven to understand the relationship linking oceanic phenomena on the one hand, and marine animals and their exploitation on the other hand. Its purpose generally has no bearing on fundamental research. As a result, fisheries oceanography rarely finds in the data provided by this latter anything to enable the progress of its specific approach of halieutic problems. Thus, in most cases, fisheries oceanography has to build its own baseline research, following specific programs and methods. Another disadvantage derives from this state of things. The education provided to young oceanographers does not prepare them for tackling practical oceanography and they have to... |

Sardine and anchovy are very abundant in Morocco where they constitute some of the most heavily fished species. Although they are distributed throughout the coastal zone, these two species can be completely absent from vast areas during certain periods when they concentrate in areas more or less offshore for several weeks or even months. Thus, the central Safi-Mogador region and the southern region stretching from Agadir to Ifni are sometimes overpopulated while schools are rare in other areas, but these regions are periodically deserted by a large part of the population which emigrates to other areas.... |

These observations were recorded on biological samples from the Atlantic coast of Morocco between 1947 and 1950. This study continues the work by M.-L. Furnestin (1957), including a quantitative study and an examination of the different planktonic groups from the same samples (Chaetognatha, Siphonophora, Appendicularia, Thaliacea, Cladocera). We have already given all the details on the sampled area, capture conditions and the hydrological situation. The most important hydrological features are the rise of the waters from the continental margin along the coast in spring and summer and the partial invasion of offshore waters in the coastal zone during the same seasons.... |

The studies dealing with plankton in the Moroccan area are very rare and incomplete: works by Tattersall (1927) and Nouvel (l95I) on the Mysidacea, by L. Fage (1928) on the Cumacean, quantitative studies by Jespersen (1923, 1935). [...] A number of species belonging to the most diverse planktonic groups have been observed in the Moroccan area. But these collections are far from being completely studied, many of them are still spread out and no overall work has ever been undertaken. As no taxonomic exploration of this area has ever been undertaken, the Moroccan zooplankton constituted an almost new material. But we could not possibly make a general study out of it, even for research which stretched over several years. Thus, our observations have been... |
