Markus; Zollitsch, Ao.Univ.Prof. Dr. Werner.
The aim of the present study is to formulate dietary concepts for lactating sows for suggestion by advisory services. In a feeding experiment, the effects of two different types of diets are investigated on performance and animal health. The treatments differ in the expected amino acid supply (U=unbalanced amino acid pattern; O= balanced). Data from 41 farrowings do not show significant differences in live weight (O=228,6 kg; U=227,9 kg), feed intake and serum urea concentration neither at the time of transition to farrowing pen nor at the time of weaning. Serum concentration of NEFA was significantly (p=0,020) higher in treatment O. Litter size of weaning piglets differs significantly (p=0,037) between treatments. In treatment U increased piglet...

Orale Eisengabe bei Saugferkel unter den Bedingungen der ökologischen Ferkelerzeugung Organic Eprints
Hagmüller, Dr. Werner; Gallnböck, Ing. Markus.
Iron prophylaxis in suckling piglets is usually administered as intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. These formulations are medicinal products and therefore prescribable in organic producing farms. Although iron dextran is not allowed through the EU Regulation 834/07 there are no restrictions about medicinal products. Used as feed additive iron dextran is prohibited. Oral administration of iron pastes is common in some organic farms. This paper deals with oral administration of iron pastes containing only approved feed additives like iron oxid or iron sulfate. 22 litters were included. Piglets were randomised and assigned to either control or experimental group. With the exception of a commercial paste given two times (day 1 and 7) none of the...

Ergebnisse zur saisonalen Low-Input Vollweidehaltung von Milchkühen im österreichischen Berggebiet Organic Eprints
Steinwidder, Dr. Andreas; Starz, DI Walter; Podstatzky, Dr. Leopold; Kirner, Dr. Leopold; Pötsch, Doz. Dr. Erich M.; Pfister, Rupert; Gallnböck, Ing. Markus.
In a research project six dairy farms (5 organic, 1 low input) in mountainous regions of Austria were supervised in converting to a seasonal low-input dairy production system based on grazing. Within an observation period of three years (October 1st, 2004 – September 30th, 2007) a strict annual cycle in milk production and reproduction could be implemented on two farms only. In average a pasture proportion of 42 % (26–61 %) of the total feeding ration per year could be determined, depending on the farm specific conditions and the implementation level of this low input strategy. On four farms, which fed low amounts of supplemental feeds, a pasture proportion of 50 % of the total feeding ration was realized. With an input of only 470 kg DM...
