Observation of Mesoscale Instabilities of the Northern Current in the North Western Mediterranean Sea: a combined study using Gliders, Surface Drifters, Moving Vessel Profiler and Vessel Data in the Ligurian ArchiMer
Pairaud, Ivane; Garreau, Pierre; Le Berre, David; Fernandez, Delphine; Bellomo, Lucio; Garnier, Valerie.
The Northern Current (NC) is a branch of the general North-Western Mediterranean cyclonic circulation extending from the Ligurian to the Catalan Sea (Millot, Dynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans, vol. 15, 1991). In winter and early spring, instabilities of this slope current are intense and can generate eddies, meanders and filaments. The study of mesoscale structures is crucial in the coastal area because of their physical and biogeochemical impact on ecosystems. They play a role in water, chemicals and nutrients transport, vertical mixing and possible trapping of biological materials. Results from a combined observational effort put forth in March 2012 during the IMEDIA cruise dedicated to eddy tracking are presented. This work aims at providing...

VACUMM - A Python Library for Ocean Science ArchiMer
Raynaud, Stephane; Charria, Guillaume; Wilkins, Jonathan; Garnier, Valerie; Garreau, Pierre; Theetten, Sebastien.
VACUMM is an open-source Python library for processing data from observations and numerical models. The library is now used for several years in research and operational contexts, for instance for producing fi gures and reports, validating models, converting data, or making simple or advanced diagnostics. In this paper, we introduce how the library is built, and we present two applications of its use: one in an operational context and one in a research context.

Regional assessment of altimetry products in the NW Med : Comparison to in-situ data and model outputs ArchiMer
Dussurget, Renaud; Pairaud, Ivane; Dufau, Claire; Charria, Guillaume; Garreau, Pierre; Garnier, Valerie.
In this preliminary study, we investigate the characteristics of a standard regional NRT product & an experimental L3 coastal sea-level product from PISTACH data, and assess their combined use with in-situ data (drifters) and a regional model. The results suggest that: •J2 NRT data shows some consistent behaviour with drifter data, despite biases •RED3 retracking : better coastal coverage (>5%) •NORMED model has an excess of energy at the mesoscales, possibly arising from the lack of energy dissipation towards the finer scales

Downscaling from Oceanic Global Circulation Model towards Regional and Coastal Model using spectral nudging techniques: application to the Mediterranean Sea and IBI area models ArchiMer
Herbert, Gaelle; Garreau, Pierre; Garnier, Valerie; Dumas, Franck; Caillaud, S.; Chanut, Jerome; Levier, Bruno; Aznar, Roland.
In order to favour the downstream from the European MyOcean service of large scale ocean forecasts to the national service of coastal ocean forecasts, studies of new methods improving the downscaling between global or regional ocean models and coastal ones are in progress. In the framework of PREVIMER and MyOcean projects respectively, IFREMER and Mercator Ocean studied in parallel the impact of the spectral nudging method. In the present work, the performance of spectral nudging was assessed using two regional hydrodynamic models: one of Mediterranean Sea and one of the Iberia-Biscay-Ireland (IBI) area. They are both forced by a coarser global circulation model (GCM) (PSY2V4/Mercator Ocean). This technique prevents large and unrealistic departures between...

Development of a hydrodynamic model of the Bay of Biscay. Validation of hydrology ArchiMer
Lazure, Pascal; Garnier, Valerie; Dumas, Franck; Herry, Christelle; Chifflet, Marina.
The hydrology of the Bay of Biscay was investigated using the regional ocean model MARS3D (Model for Application at Regional Scale). The simulated hydrology is compared to a set of various data encompassing monthly climatology, remote sensing SST CTD casts, and coastal salinity measurements. Special focus was put on the validation over the continental shelf. This paper reports that despite some misfits, the climatological hydrology and its seasonal variability are correctly simulated. Various statistics computed over the period from 1999-2004 highlight different aspects of the hydrology. The biases and root mean square errors (RMSE) remain very weak at all depths when comparing salinity (< 0.1 and < 0.6psu respectively). The predicted temperature...

Garnier, Valerie; Pairaud, Ivane; Nicolle, Amandine; Alekseenko, Elena; Baklouti, Melika; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Lecornu, Fabrice; Garreau, Pierre.
IFREMER has encouraged for over 15 years the oceanographic modeling of sea waters all around the metropolitan French coasts in order to facilitate environmental coastal studies. In that context, the North-Western Mediterranean Sea confi guration (MENOR: 1.2 km – 60 vertical levels) has been introduced in the framework of Previmer operational forecasting system (http://www.previmer.org/en). This article gives an insight into the operational applications and scientific research using this MENOR configuration.

Ecological model of the Bay of Biscay and English Channel shelf for Environmental Status assessment Part 1: Nutrients, phytoplankton and oxygen ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Dussauze, Morgan; Dumas, Franck; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Garnier, Valerie; Lecornu, Fabrice; Repecaud, Michel.
European directives (Water Framework Directive - WFD and Marine Strategy Framework Directive - MSFD) require a regular survey of several descriptors of the Environmental Status of coastal waters of the North-east Atlantic Ocean. Especially for the MSFD, which may concern large continental shelf areas where measurements are scarce, realistic ecological models can help assessing the Environmental Status. The ECO-MARS3D model of the pelagic ecosystem of the Bay of Biscay and English Channel continental shelf (NE Atlantic) has been developed for these applied purposes and validated against various types of historic data. This first paper deals with the basic biogeochemical version, which contains inorganic nutrients (NH4, NO3, PO4, Si(OH)4), three...

Suspended Sediment Dynamics in the Macrotidal Seine Estuary (France) - Part 1: Numerical Modeling of Turbidity Maximum Dynamics ArchiMer
Grasso, Florent; Verney, Romaric; Le Hir, Pierre; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Schulz, Elisabeth; Kervella, Youenn; Fard, I. Khojasteh Pour; Lemoine, J. -p.; Dumas, Franck; Garnier, Valerie.
Tidal pumping, baroclinic circulation and vertical mixing are known to be the main mechanisms responsible for the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) formation. However, the influence of hydro-meteorological conditions on ETM dynamics is still not properly grasped and requires further investigation to be quantified. Based on a realistic 3-dimensional numerical model of the macrotidal Seine Estuary (France) that accounts for mud and sand transport processes, the objective of this study is to quantify the influence of the main forcing (river flow, tides, waves) on the ETM location and mass changes. As expected, the ETM location is strongly modulated by semidiurnal tidal cycles and fortnightly timescales with a high sensitivity to river flow variations. The ETM...

Mixed Layer formation and restratification in presence of mesoscale and submesoscale turbulence ArchiMer
Couvelard, Xavier; Dumas, Franck; Garnier, Valerie; Ponte, Aurelien; Talandier, Claude; Treguier, Anne-marie.
Recent realistic high resolution modeling studies show a net increase of submesoscale activity in fall and winter when the mixed layer depth is at its maximum. This submesoscale activity increase is associated with a reduced deepening of the mixed layer. Both phenomena can be related to the development of mixed layer instabilities, which convert available potential energy into submesoscale eddy kinetic energy and contribute to a fast restratification by slumping the horizontal density gradient in the mixed layer. In the present work, the mixed layer formation and restratification was studied by uniformly cooling a fully turbulent zonal jet in a periodic channel at different resolutions, from eddy resolving (10 km) to submesoscale permitting (2 km). The...

SURFEX v8.0 interface with OASIS3-MCT to couple atmosphere with hydrology, ocean, waves and sea-ice models, from coastal to global scales ArchiMer
Voldoire, Aurore; Decharme, Bertrand; Pianezze, Joris; Brossier, Cindy Lebeaupin; Sevault, Florence; Seyfried, Leo; Garnier, Valerie; Bielli, Soline; Valcke, Sophie; Alias, Antoinette; Accensi, Mickael; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Bouin, Marie-noelle; Ducrocq, Veronique; Faroux, Stephanie; Giordani, Herve; Leger, Fabien; Marsaleix, Patrick; Rainaud, Romain; Redelsperger, Jean-luc; Richard, Evelyne; Riette, Sebastien.
This study presents the principles of the new coupling interface based on the SURFEX multi-surface model and the OASIS3-MCT coupler. As SURFEX can be plugged into several atmospheric models, it can be used in a wide range of applications, from global and regional coupled climate systems to high-resolution numerical weather prediction systems or very fine-scale models dedicated to process studies. The objective of this development is to build and share a common structure for the atmosphere-surface coupling of all these applications, involving on the one hand atmospheric models and on the other hand ocean, ice, hydrology, and wave models. The numerical and physical principles of SURFEX interface between the different component models are described, and the...

PROTEVS-MED field experiments: very high resolution hydrographic surveys in the Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Louazel, Stephanie; Correard, Stéphanie; Fercocq, Solenn; Le Menn, Marc; Serpette, Alain; Garnier, Valerie; Stegner, Alexandre; Le Vu, Briac; Doglioli, Andrea; Gregori, Gerald.
From 2015 to 2018 four field experiments (seven legs) were performed in the Western Mediterranean basin during winter or early spring. The main objectives were the assessment of high-resolution modeling and the observation of mesoscale structure and associated ageostrophic dynamics. Thanks to the intensive use of a towed vehicle undulating in the upper oceanic layer between 0 and 400 m depth (SeaSoar), a large number of very high resolution hydrographic transects (total length about 10 000 km) were measured, observing mesoscale dynamics (slope current and its instabilities, anticyclonic eddies, submesoscale coherent vortices, frontal dynamics, convection events, strait outflows) and submesoscale processes like stirring, mixed-layer or symmetric...
