Einfluss der Umstellung von Stall- auf Weidefütterung auf den Vormagen pH-Wert von Milchkühen Organic Eprints
Steinwidder, Andreas; Horn, Marco; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes; Gasteiner, Johann.
To investigate the effect of feed transition from barn feeding to pasture on the course of ruminal pH a study with 8 lactating dairy cows was undertaken. Therefore, an indwelling pH-measurement and data transmitting system was used. The experiment started at 27th March 2012 and a gradual transition from barn feeding to pasture feeding was done (periods P1-P6). After 7 days of barn feeding (P1) animals were given pasture progressively with increasing grazing time from 2 to 7 h/d (P2, day 8-14). In P3 (day 15-21) the cows spent 7 hours/d on pasture. Beginning on day 22, animals had 20 h/d access to pasture (continuous grazing), only semi-daily interrupted for 2 hours for milking and additional feeding (P4-P6). During the barn feeding period (P1), average...

Horn, Marco; Steinwidder, Andreas; Podstatzky, Leopold; Gasteiner, Johann; Zollitsch, Werner.
The core task of sustainable milk production is the conversion of forage into milk, dairy products and, as a by-product, into meat. In Europe and North America, for decades dairy cows were selected for a high genetic merit for milk production under high input farming conditions. It is therefore questionable whether these "high input genotypes" are suitable for forage-based, organic farming systems. The objective of this study was to compare two cow types concerning their suitability for an Alpine organic, low input dairy production system. The cow types used were conventional Brown Swiss (BV) on the one hand and a specific strain of Holstein Friesian (HFL), selected for lifetime performance, on the other. Both cow types were managed within one herd in an...

Untersuchungen zur Aussagekraft von Blutparametern und Milchinhaltsstoffen bei Milchkühen Organic Eprints
Gregoritsch, Patrick; Steinwidder, Andreas; Gasteiner, Johann; Potztatzky, Leopold; Zolitsch, Werner.

Milk production from grazed pasture in mountainous regions of Austria - impact of calving season Organic Eprints
Steinwidder, Andreas; Starz, Walter; Podstatzky, Leopold; Gasteiner, Johann; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes; Gallnböck, Markus.
The influence of calving season on milk yield, lactation length, composition of the diet, reproduction and nutrient supply for pasture-based systems in a mountainous region of Austria was examined with thirty-three dairy cows on an organic farm. Three groups of cows with a mean calving date of 17 November (group 1), 25 December (group 2) and 20 February (group 3) were compared. During winter periods the cows were housed and fed with grass silage, hay and a restrictive amount of concentrate. Cows were on pasture for 202 days in 2008 and 203 days in 2009 (177 day and night grazing days). The pasture area was continuously grazed at an average sward height of 4.7 cm. Calving in February (group 3) significantly depressed lactation length and milk-fat yield and...

Steinwidder, Andreas; Horn, Marco; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes; Gasteiner, Johann.

Steinwidder, Andreas; Horn, Marco; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes; Gasteiner, Johann.
The effects of two concentrate levels on reticuloruminal pH values of lactating cows were determined. An indwelling wireless data transmitting system for continuous pH measurement was given to 9 heifers and 11 cows orally 2 weeks before expected calving. All animals were fed with hay and grass silage, no concentrate was fed before parturition. After parturition cattle were assigned to one of two concentrate supplementation levels (Kon, Low). In group Kon the concentrate intake per cow increased from 2.5 kg DM in week 1 (17 % concentrate of DMI) to 7.2 kg in week 5 (38 % concentrate) and in group Low from 1.4 kg in week 1 (10 % concentrate of DMI) to 3.8 kg DM in week 5 (24 % concentrate). Before parturition no significant effects of week on daily mean pH...

Vollweidehaltung von Milchkühen im Berggebiet – Einfluss des Abkalbezeitpunktes auf Rationszusammensetzung, Leistungs- und Gesundheitsparameter Organic Eprints
Steinwidder, Andreas; Starz, Walter; Podstatzky, Leopold; Gasteiner, Johann; Pfister, Rupert; Gallnböck, Markus.

Do different cow types respond differently to a reduction of concentrate supplementation in an Alpine low-input dairy system? Organic Eprints
Horn, Marco; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Gasteiner, Johann; Vestergaard, M.; Larsen, Torben; Zollitsch, Werner.
Forage based low-input dairy systems include a certain risk of a temporary undersupply with nutrients and energy. Therefore the aim of the present study was to investigate the productive, reproductive and metabolic response of two different dairy cow types to a reduction of concentrate supplementation in an Alpine low-input milk production system. The cow types compared were conventional Austrian Brown Swiss (BS) and a specific strain of Holstein Friesian (HFL). The latter was primarily selected for lifetime performance and Fitness under low-input conditions and is therefore considered by Farmers as being better suited for low-input production systems. Both genotypes were assigned to one of two concentrate supplementation levels, receiving 618 kg (Con) or...

Suitability of different dairy cow types for an Alpine organic and low-input milk production system Organic Eprints
Horn, Marco; Steinwidder, Andreas; Gasteiner, Johann; Podstatzky, Leopold; Haiger, Alfred; Zollitsch, Werner.
The implementation of a seasonal, site adapted, pasture-based milk production system as applied in New Zealand and North Western Europe might be an alternative for the near future in Alpine regions. As in such a low-input system the fertility and secondary traits such as robustness against metabolic challenges of dairy cows is of crucial importance, it is questionable whether conventional dairy cow types, which were selected primarily for milk production under high-input conditions, are most suitable. Therefore the aim of this study was to compare two different genotypes concerning their suitability for an organic, low-input milk production system under Alpine conditions. Between 2008 and 2011 records from 91 lactations of Brown...

Close relationship between pre- and post-calving reticuloruminal pH levels in dairy cows Organic Eprints
Steinwidder, Andreas; Horn, Marco; Pister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes; Gasteiner, Johann.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of the prepartum reticuloruminal pH values on the postpartum pH values of lactating cows at two concentrate supplementation levels. An indwelling pH measurement system with a wireless data transmitting unit was given to 9 heifers and 11 cows orally 2 weeks before expected calving. pH was measured from week 2 prepartum to week 6 postpartum. Prepartum, all animals were fed hay and grass silage only. After parturition the animals were assigned to one of two concentrate supplementation levels (Con and Low). During the first 6 weeks postpartum, 5.6 kg and 2.9 kg dry matter (DM) per day of concentrates were fed to cows in groups Con and Low, respectively. Before parturition, no effect of the week on the...
