Various zein-coated artificial diets were distributed either alone or in association with rotifers to larvae of sea-bass and sole. Utilization of artificial diets alone gave rather unsatisfactory results, whereas , the simultaneous use of these with limited quantity of live-preys proved successful : when a low density of fish was retained (3 to S larvae/litre), it was found that the survival rate after one month for the sea-bass was above 10 p. 100 and for the sole, there was metamorphosis up to 71 p. 100. The analysis of results obtained for the different artificial diets seems to indicate that the superiority of live rotifers is more due to their movement than to their composition. |

The aim of the present work is to compare different methods employed for increasing the stability to water of diets used for feeding fish larvae. The various methods of protection tested are : - the addition of gelatin to the diet, - the encapsulation by synthetic (nylon) or natural (gelatin, zein) polymers, - the coating by zein. The water stability of the unprotected diet particles is very low : only 3 % of the diets are recovered by filtration after 4 hours in water. The addition of 10 % gelatin improves slightly this stability (13 to 25). While encapsulation with nylon considerably increases the water-standing capacity of diets (56 to 66 %), the best results are obtained with the particles encapsulated using natural polymers (74 to 79 %).
