Factors Influencing Producers’ Marketing Decisions in the Louisiana Crawfish Industry AgEcon

Factors influencing farmer selection of a crawfish marketing outlet were analyzed using 2008 survey data from the Louisiana crawfish industry. Most farmers sell directly to wholesalers. Probit results show farm size, farm income, household income, age, education, and pre-market grading and washing operations significantly affecting farmer selection of an outlet.

Case Studies of Strategic Alliances in U.S. Beef Production AgEcon

Calf marketing, commercial beef carcass, and natural/implant-free beef strategic alliances were examined via case study to determine alliance structure and whether each addressed risk, transaction costs, capital availability, and other concerns. All alliances were structured differently through vertical or horizontal coordination, and each had been established within the past 12 years. Alliance administrators reported that an advantage to cow-calf producers was higher cattle prices received relative to producers outside the alliances. The alliances reduced transaction costs and increased information flow among segments. Alliances did not specifically address risk or increased access to capital for technology adoption or expansion purposes.

Beef Producer Choice in Cattle Marketing AgEcon

In addition to the conventional auction method of cattle marketing, some alternative marketing arrangements include sale by private treaty, video auction, retained ownership, and use of strategic alliances. This study finds that 91% of Louisiana producers use conventional auctions, while 39% use other types of marketing arrangements. The most heavily used alternative marketing arrangement is private treaty, at 26%. Those producers using alternative marketing arrangements tend to be larger, have heavier weaning weights, have more diverse farming operations, be younger, have greater contact with their county extension agents, and depend less on income from off-farm sources.

Homogeneity of Farm Labor: A Dual Approach AgEcon

The assumption of homogeneity between family and hired farm labor is common in farm labor research. Controlling for region and farm size, this study employs a seemingly unrelated regression analysis to jointly estimate a translog cost function and factor cost shares to determine the elasticity of substitution between hired and family farm labor. The results show an evidence of heterogeneity of farm labor in both cash grain and hog farms in the U.S. There is further evidence that the elasticity of substitution is unitary and the cost minimizing ratio of hired and family labor is not independent of time. The Adoption of Russian Varroa-Resistant Honey Bees AgEcon

Factors influencing the adoption of Russian Varroa-Resistant honey bees were assessed using a double hurdle model. Results indicate factors associated with the adoption include sales over $1,000 of bee related products, residence in the delta states, internet use, and membership in the AHPA. Negatively associated factors are high percentage of income coming from beekeeping, and membership in the ABF. Intensity of adoption increased with frequent contact with the USDA, and decreased with greater colony size, sales and membership in the ABF.

An Evaluation of U.S. Hog Producer Preferences Toward Autonomy AgEcon

Hog farmers’ preferences for autonomy are assessed through the use of eight questions dealing with their preferences for general decision making and with respect to specific management actions. Farmers generally preferred to make a higher percentage of the decisions about their operations, especially older producers and those who operated farrowing units. Farmers who placed lower values on autonomy finished hogs, were nearing retirement, valued social relationships with other farmers more highly, had higher off-farm income, or were larger farmers.

CONSUMER AWARENESS AND USE OF NUTRITION LABELS ON PACKAGED FRESH MEATS: A PILOT STUDY AgEcon

The Nutritional Labeling and Education Act of 1990 called for the voluntary nutrition labeling of packaged fresh meats in retail stores. The stores had until mid-1994 to meet the Act's provisions. Availability and use of these labels in Louisiana retail stores were examined by a 1997 survey of households. One-half of the responding households perceived that these nutrition labels were in use in stores, and when available, they were used by most respondents. The primary reasons for nonuse include sufficient prior knowledge of nutrient content, insufficient shopping time to check labels, and lack of interest in nutrient content. The Economics of Rotational Grazing in the Gulf Coast Region: Costs, Returns, and Labor Considerations, Phase II AgEcon

Profitability and labor associated with rotational grazing at three stocking rates and continuous grazing at a medium stocking rate are compared. On a per-acre basis, profits are lowest for low stocking rate rotational grazing. Labor is greatest on both per-acre and per-cow bases with high stocking rate rotational grazing.

Beef and dairy producers' goal hierarchies over seven goals are compared using fuzzy pair-wise comparison and simple ranking methods. Results show the two methods do not provide similar goal rankings. Producers place greater importance on some goals than others, but are not in agreement as to the relative importance of goals.

Adoption of Technology, Management Practices, and Production Systems in U.S. Milk Production AgEcon

We examine U.S. dairy farmer adopter characteristics and adoption rates of eleven technologies. Excepting grazing, technologies were generally adopted complementarily. Four were used on higher percentages of farms in 2005 than 2000. The interaction of farm size with adoption suggests greater percentages of milk being produced under each, excepting grazing.

Awareness of and Application to the Environmental Quality Incentives Program By Cow–Calf Producers AgEcon

This study uses a bivariate probit model with partial observability to examine Louisiana beef producers’ awareness of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and how awareness translates to application to the program. Results indicate that awareness of and application to the EQIP depend on portion of income derived from off-farm sources, extent of previous best management practice adoption at one’s own expense, household income, farmed land that is highly erodible, contact with Natural Resource Conservation Service and extension service personnel, and producer age.

Small U.S. Dairy Farms: Can They Compete? AgEcon

The U.S. dairy industry is undergoing rapid structural change, evolving from a structure including many small farmers in the Upper Midwest and Northeast to one that includes very large farms in new production regions. Small farms are struggling to retain competitiveness via improved management and low-input systems. Using data from USDA’s Agricultural Resource Management Survey, we determine the extent of U.S. conventional and pasture-based milk production during 2003-2007, and estimate net returns, scale efficiency, and technical efficiency associated with the systems across different operation sizes. How Do Ratite Meats Compare with Beef?: Implications for the Ratite Industry AgEcon

Emu and ostrich meats were compared with beef to identify and quantify their sensory attributes. A sensory panel was used to compare U.S. Department of Agriculture Choice top sirloin beef with emu and ostrich meat, both ground and intact forms. Comparisons of sensory quality and acceptability were made after zero, two, four and six months of frozen storage. Differences in flavor, juiciness and texture were detected between ratite meats and beef (the control). The differences were more pronounced for intact cuts than ground meat, with ratite meat usually being rated inferior to beef. Some differences in sensory acceptability across the sic-month storage period were revealed. Implications for marketing the ratite meats are made based upon the study.

CONSUMER ATTITUDES TOWARD POTENTIAL COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN LABELING OF FRESH OR FROZEN BEEF AgEcon

A sample of Louisiana households was surveyed by mail to estimate their degree of support for compulsory country-of-origin labeling of fresh or frozen beef in grocery stores and restaurants. This potential requirement for grocery stores and restaurants was supported by 93 and 88 percent of respondents, respectively. Binomial probit analysis identified the socioeconomic characteristics of consumers with respect to their decision on the labeling of fresh or frozen beef in grocery stores and restaurants. Important variables for both types of outlets were “"prefer domestic over imported durable goods,"” “"consider domestic beef safer than imported beef,"” and “"male.”"

The Adoption of Best-Management Practices by Louisiana Dairy Producers AgEcon

This study examines the adoption of best-management practices (BMPs) in terms of the total number of practices implemented up to a certain period, using count data analysis. Poisson and negative binomial regressions were used to examine the likely determinants of producers’ decisions to adopt greater numbers of technologies, and the specific case of dairy producers’ adoption of BMPs was explored. Our results emphasize the significant effect of producers’ awareness of the efforts to control non-point source pollution, information about BMPs, farms size, producer’s educational attainment, and risk aversion on the number of BMPs adopted.

Economics and Productivity of Organic versus Non-organic Dairy Farms in the United States AgEcon

Technical and scale efficiencies are estimated for organic and non-organic dairy farms in the United States using an input distance function approach. A multinomial logit analysis is used to categorize the farms by technology. Large conventional farms outperformed smaller farms in most technology / organic / non-organic categories. There was high variability in net returns among the organics so that they did not differ significantly from the large conventional farms. The largest conventional non-organic operations and conventional organic operations tended to have the higher technical efficiencies.
