(Not controled OCR) Economic literature is replete with discussions of risk, market imperfections and firm growth ; often as separate topics. A discussion of risk must inevitably mention Frank Knight's classic contributions to the topic and his dichotomy between risk and uncertainty. Subsequent work has blurred this distinction by introducing subjective probability and expected utility maximization. Subsequent work has also shed doubt on the validity of the expected utility hypothesis in willingness to pay gambles and yet sustained it in the context of aggregate market behavior and "testable hypotheses" (Knez, et al, 1985). to this vast and complex literature we do not aspire to contribute much that is new. Instead we will attempt to apply concepts to a... |

The object of this study is to provide an analysis of how prices are set for demersal species in France. The prices of what the Boulonnais seafaring trawlers bring in are studied more in retail. Several aspects are examined: - the effect of the size of the amounts landed; - the effect of the average size or weight of the fish; - the influence of imports of fresh and frozen fish; - the substitution among species; - the influence of changes of national income; - the effect of seasonality; These aspects are captured in this study from monthly data (these data were provided by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Boulogne-sur-Mer as well as by the Central Committee of Maritime Fishing). Excluded from the field of analysis are short-term price... |

This econometric study is an integral part of a series of research works that IFREMER is undertaking on use planning of scallop fishing in St Brieuc Bay. It aims to provide a quantification of changes in the value of new and used boats in use in St Brieuc Bay. This study will make it possible to: (i) explain the importance of the capital invested in scallop fisheries; that will be used for analysis of the growth of this fishery from 1965 to 1985; (ii) evaluate the pace of depreciation of the capital; this latter will be integrated into a bio-economical model that analyzes various strategies of long-term exploitation of the scallop stock (see "A bio-economic model for the scallop in St Brieuc Bay", by J.M. GATES, document DRV/SDA 86.06). |

This document is meant to contribute technical and economic factors that make it possible to give an assessment of the experiments in salmon farming conducted on St Pierrre and Miquelon and to envisage strategies for the future. Before participating in a potential transfer of this activity to the professionals, IFREMER's Department of Living Resources requested the RA and SDA departments to conduct a study on salmon farming potential in the archipelago with regard to ecological, technical and economic constraints. By reason of the short time period, a certain number of points were not delved into; they could be the subjects of more in-depth studies by specialist organisations. The appendices to this document evaluate the history of the program (appendix... |

The peneid shrimp resource lying off French Guyanais a part of the large scale shrimp of the nortern coast of South America :the «Guy anas» from northern Brazil,French Guyana, Surinam and Guyana. The exploitation of this multi-species shrimp stock ,started in 1959, yielded a so-called «equilibrium annual yield of 12000 to 15000 metric tons .The overall set-up of EEZ national regulations lead, through a graduai fishery licencing system,to a sedentarisation of the fleets. The original political status of French Guyana (as a part of France andEuropean Economie Community) provides peculiar rules of this fishery managment.Looking through this 30 past years the general trends and step wise responses of fishery research to the enforcement and growing-up of fishery... |

The refined study of the structure of aquafarming companies (traditional shellfish farming or new aquafarming) comes out of this study's topic. The research of MERCKELBAGH and ESNOUF (1978), DUMONT (1984; 1985) on the shellfish farming sector and BARBAZANGE (1982), GILLY and WEBER (1985) on new aquafarming showed that production and marketing facilities in aquafarming were connected, in substance, to the facilities of small agricultural production. - Several factors argue in this direction: - French production is basically made up of small-scale and/or family-run companies, especially in shellfish farming. - the work is in the majority of cases carried out by family labour, possibly supplemented by a small number of permanent employees and a high number... |

The business of seafood for direct consumption in France is divided into three distinct technological procedures of stabilisation: - The drying and salting processes are the oldest. They experienced a steep decline starting at the Second World War and, paradoxically, they appear today as high-end products. - Appertisation (heat sterilising procedure developed by N. APPERT in 1801) was very widely developed along the entire French shoreline from many small companies at the end of the 19th century. The three main species processed are the sardine, mackerel and tuna. - Deep freezing is a more recent activity compared with the two preceding ones. It was developed in France starting in 1960. The growth of the market was accompanied by the creation of several... |

Shrimp fisheries in French Guyana suffer from the influence of exogenous pressures on shrimp stock. In terms of shrimp stock, the fluctuations in recruitment are very high and determine for the most part the annual production of shrimp boats (Figure 1). Work in progress on the evolution of shrimp stocks suggest that the relatively short shrimp life span (18 months) does not allow a cohort to be exploited over more than one year. In terms of the shrimp boat fleet, there are no alternative outlets for fishing effort. |

The landed prices of the four main demersal species (whiting, saithe, haddock, cod) in France vary based on the amount landed, the average weight of the fish, imports and seasonal factors. Adapting an econometric model to the period 1974-1983 makes it possible to differentiate the four species as regards the determination of prices. - Cod seems like the key species, around which the prices of the three other species are determined. The visible consumption of cod is the highest (around 60,000 tonnes per year, more than half of which is imported). The average landed price depends to some degree on the landed and imported amounts: rises of 10% of landed amounts and imported amounts cause a direct drop of 3% and of 1.5% respectively in the landed price. The... |

From symposiums to conferences, from reviews to evaluations, from laboratory to the field, aquaculture has not developed in apathy. Before it was even established, aquaculture challenged relationships between professionals, the scientific community, administrative authorities and political bodies. A review of documents, whatever their source, shows excessive reactions, sometimes optimistic, sometimes pessimistic. Why so much ado? How can we explain why aquaculture was accepted so heartily by professionals of the fishing industry who are generally considered to be relatively resistant to innovation? Why were stances defended so passionately by scientists, who in principle are prepared for the unexpected and trained for analysis? How can we explain why... |

(Not controled OCR) This paper presents some attempts for a French a rtisanal fishing enterprises typology. The originality of these attempts arises from the lead given to economic variables in order to analyze the fishing fleet using accountable datas both at national then regional level. The theoric use of economic and financial ratios (added value, solvency and financial autonomy) leads to the presentation of the a rtisanal fleet economic situation. The choice of a geographic area and the use of multiple-correspondance-analysis permits a cross analysis of fisheries features and return criteria. |
