VARIABILIDAD EN RASGOS POLINICOS EN EL COMPLEJO MIMULUS LUTEUS L. (PHRYMACEAE) EN CHILE CENTRAL Gayana Botánica
Carvallo,Gastón; Ginocchio,Rosanna.
We quantified the variability of pollen morphology and life history traits among three natural populations of two taxa in the Mimulus luteus complex and a group of putative hybrids that coexist in the Andean ranges of central Chile. Pollen grain production and polar/equatorial length ratio, an index of pollen grain morphology, differed significantly among the taxa. The differences detected in these generally conservative traits, may reflect introgression, known to be common in Mimulus

Effect of fire on herbaceous "matorral" vegetation of Central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Sabadin,Patricia; Gómez,Miguel; Ginocchio,Rosanna; Peña,Iván; Mujica,Ana María; Montenegro,Gloria.
This research aimed to determine the diversity and biomass of species in burned in the Jardín Botánico Nacional of Viña del Mar (JBN), region of Valparaíso, Chile (Lat. S 33° 02’ and Long. 71° 35’ O) from April to December 2012. Three sites were selected that were located on slopes with the same exposure: 1) site burned by fire in 2012, 2) site burned by fire in 2003, and 3) control site corresponding to an area without previous fires. Both shrub and herbaceous species were studied. The cover of shrubs, geophytes and therophytes was determined as well as the aboveground and belowground biomass of geophytes, with special attention paid to Oziroe arida. When O. arida was present, the diameter of its bulbs were studied. All information was...

Tolerance of native Magellan fungi in peat to anthracene and n-dodecane for potential use in bioremediation Ciencia e Investigación Agraria

Tolerance of Magellan fungi in peat to anthracene and n-dodecane for potential use in bioremediation. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(1):85-93. The tolerances of filamentous Magellan fungi in peat were analyzed in the presence of structurally different petroleum hydrocarbons to assess their abilities for bioremediation in contaminated soils. Fungi on PDA (potato dextrose agar) and fresh peat plates were cultured and purified. The morphologically identified species were grown in a hydrocarbon adapted-fungi (HAF) medium. Increasing concentrations of anthracene, n-dodecane and furfural were applied to observe tolerances based on the radial growth kinetics of hyphae. The results showed that the radial growths of hyphae in anthracene reached average speeds of 10.95 ± 1.21,...

Phytostabilization of massive mine wastes with native phytogenetic resources: potential for sustainable use and conservation of the native flora in north-central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Orchard,Cristina; León-Lobos,Pedro; Ginocchio,Rosanna.
The mining industry has left an important legacy of inadequately abandoned tailing storage facilities (TSFs) in the north-central area of Chile, and they may pose environmental risks. The Chilean government has recently established new regulations governing the closure of TSFs, and these regulations favor the use of environmentally sustainable technologies. Among these technologies is phytostabilization, which can use native plant species that may also have economic and/or subsistence value. Phytostabilization programs based on sustainably maintained native species could also contribute to the conservation of both local flora and regional ecosystems in north-central Chile. The main objective of this study was to use the Coquimbo region as a case study area...

Comparison of methods for determining the color of Chilean honeys and the relationship of color with botanical origin in central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Martin,María José; Fredes,Carolina; Nuñez,Gabriel; Ginocchio,Rosanna; Montenegro,Gloria.
The color of honey has special relevance in the international market, as different markets demand specific colors of honey. Chile has very diverse native and exotic flora, which are used by bees (Apis mellifera) to produce a range of honey types, including honeys of different colors. In this context, determining the relationships between color and botanical origin among Chilean honeys is very relevant. The objectives of the present study were to compare three methodologies for determining color in Chilean honeys (Pantone®, optical density (OD), and Pfund) and to define the relationship between color and botanical origin of the characterized honeys. The most common honeys from the Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins Region (VI Region) of Chile were Galega...
