Bibliographical notes on de Folin & Bérillon's Malacological papers concerning "La Region Extrême S.-O. de la France" and related publications by de Folin and Barrois Naturalis
Gittenberger, E.; Kosten, A.P.W.M..
Between 1874 and 1877 the marquis L. de Folin and F. Bérillon published several papers on the non-marine mollusks of the southwesternmost part of France. In this series of papers, for obscure reasons published under three different headings, various new nominal molluscan taxa are introduced. Their correct citing and dating is important therefore. Because these data cannot be found in the literature, we considered it useful to summarize the results of our bibliographical investigations. As a by-product of our studies some notes are given concerning certain papers by De Folin alone and a contribution which is attributable to Barrois. De Folin & Bérillon (1874-1877) published their "Catalogue", "Etudes" and "Contributions" in two journals, which are not...

Systematics of Ariantinae (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Helicidae), a new approach to an old problem Naturalis
Groenenberg, D.S.J.; Subai, P.; Gittenberger, E..
A new starting-point in Ariantinae systematics is presented by combining data on traditional shell morphology and genital anatomy, with phylogeny reconstructions based on DNA sequence data. For nearly all genera and subgenera one or more shells are depicted and drawings of the proximal part of the genital organs are shown to illustrate the morphological diversification within the subfamily. For as much as our material allowed it, partial sequences are presented for Histone H3 (H3), Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), Cytochrome B (CytB) and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S). Some of the allegedly speciose genera like Chilostoma and Campylaea (Zilch, 1960) do not represent monophyletic groups of species, whereas most of the remaining nominal taxa (e.g. Causa,...

Host specificity and phylogenetic relationships among Atlantic Ovulidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) Naturalis
Reijnen, B.T.; Hoeksema, B.W.; Gittenberger, E..
Ovulid gastropods and their octocoral hosts were collected along the leeward coast of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. New molecular data of Caribbean and a single Atlantic species were combined with comparable data of Indo-Pacific Ovulidae and a single East-Pacific species from GenBank. Based on two DNA markers, viz. CO-I and 16S, the phylogenetic relationships among all ovulid species of which these data are available are reconstructed. The provisional results suggest a dichotomy between the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific taxa. Fully grown Simnialena uniplicata closely resembles juvenile Cyphoma gibbosum conchologically. Cymbovula acicularis and C. bahamaensis might be synonyms. The assignments of Caribbean host species for Cyphoma gibbosum, C....

A hitherto unnoticed adaptive radiation: epitoniid species (Gastropoda: Epitoniidae) associated with corals (Scleractinia) Naturalis
Gittenberger, A.; Gittenberger, E..
Twenty-two epitoniid species that live associated with various hard coral species are described. Three genera, viz. Epidendrium gen. nov., Epifungium gen. nov., and Surrepifungium gen. nov., and ten species are introduced as new to science, viz. Epidendrium aureum spec. nov., E. sordidum spec. nov., Epifungium adgranulosa spec. nov., E. adgravis spec. nov., E. adscabra spec. nov., E. marki spec. nov., E. nielsi spec. nov., E. pseudolochi spec. nov., E. pseudotwilae spec. nov., Surrepifungium patamakanthini spec. nov., and ‘Epitonium’ crassicostatum spec. nov. and ‘E.’ graviarmatum spec. nov. On Iberian Cochlicopidae and the genus Cryptazeca (Gastropoda, Pulmonata) Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
Some new data concerning the four species of Cochlicopidae known from the Iberian peninsula, viz., Azeca goodalli, Hypnophila boissii, Cochlicopa lubrica, and C. lubricella, are presented. In addition, Hypnophila malagana spec. nov. is described (by Gittenberger & Menkhorst). Cochlicopa lubrica (Müller, 1774) is designated (by Gittenberger & Waldén) as the type-species of Cochlicopa Férussac, April 1821. It is shown that the genus name Cionella Jeffreys, 1829, should not be used instead of Cochlicopa Férussac, April 1821. The genus Cryptazeca, still of uncertain systematic position, but conchologically similar to the Cochlicopidae, is revised. Anatomical characters could not be used. The data concerning Cryptazeca monodonta, C. subcylindrica, and...

Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Pupillacea : VI. die Gattung Agardhiella in Jugoslawien Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..

Frustrating facts about area cladistics and species individuality Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
Area cladistics suffer from the fact that areas have various “histories”, as such dictated by different groups of taxa. Consequently, a generalized area cladogram has not or hardly any biological meaning. Conflicting area cladograms may be derived from even the same species, when their ranges in different geological periods are used. This is a consequence of the individuality of species.

Die Aciculidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda Prosobranchia) Naturalis
Boeters, H.D.; Gittenberger, E.; Subai, P..
Our knowledge concerning the recent and fossil species and subspecies of the Aciculidae is summarized. After some introductionary chapters concerning habitat, anatomy, shell morphology and distribution, both in time and geographical, all taxa are dealt with systematically. In total 56 recent species of Aciculidae are characterized, belonging to Acicula (20), Menkia (1), Platyla (25) and Renea (10). In addition 15 fossil species are recognized, in Acicula (5), Menkia (1), Platyla (6) and Renea (3). Four Acicula species and one Platyla species are known from the Miocene to the Recent. Keys enable the identification down to the subspecies level. Synonymy lists are given. The species and subspecies are described and illustrated. Distributional data are...

Some new species of the genus Helicella (Pulmonata, Helicidae) from the province León, Spain Naturalis
Gittenberger, E.; Manga, M.Y..
Many samples of Helicellinae have been collected by the second author in León, a province in the North of Spain. While trying to identify the species represented in this material, not only the most recent summarizing publications on Spanish Helicellinae by Ortiz de Zárate (1943, 1946, 1950, 1962 1964) were consulted, but the older literature was studied as well, especially the books of Locard (1899) and Servain (1880). These, however, constitute a most serious barrier towards a better knowledge of the Iberian terrestrial molluscan fauna, as of the great number of alleged new species described in them, only unclear shell descriptions are provided, not accompanied by a single figure. Several of our species from León are considered to be new. These are...

A neotype for Aegopinella nitidula (Drapamaud, 1805) (Mollusca: Gastropoda Pulmonata: Zonitidae) Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
In order to preserve the current use of the name Aegopinella nitidula (Drapamaud, 1805), going back to Rossmässler (1835), a neotype is proposed for this taxon. The specimen concerned is described in the present paper. Two alleged syntypes in the collection of Drapamaud, in the Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna, are not accepted as syntypes because they represent two other species. The case is referred to the ICZN for a ruling.

Eine Neue Albinaria Art (Gastropoda, Clausiliidae) der Insel Kephallinia Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
Keine...

The Southeast European Hypnophila species (Mollusca: Gastropoda Pulmonata: Cochlicopidae) Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
The four Southeast European Hypnophila species are characterized conchologically. Their ranges are indicated on the basis of reliable records and summarized in a distribution map. The nomenclature is revised: a neotype is selected for H. polita (Porro, 1838), a lectotype is selected for H. pupaeformis (Cantraine, 1835), and a persistent error in the interpretation of H. zacynthia (Roth, 1855) is corrected.
