COMPUTER AND INTERNET ADOPTION ON LARGE U.S. FARMS AgEcon
Gloy, Brent A.; Akridge, Jay T..
The adoption of the personal computer and the Internet is studied within a sample of large U.S. farms. Factors such as age and education influence the adoption of both technologies. Likewise, strong relationships exist between the adoption of each technology and the sophistication of farm management and the complexity of the farm business. After controlling for computer adoption, the results suggest there remain several factors limiting Internet adoption. It appears that producers are unsure as to how the Internet can best be used to create value in their farm businesses.

Specialty Crops and the 2007 Farm Bill: The Potential Role of Farm Savings Accounts AgEcon
Gloy, Brent A.; Cheng, Mei-luan.
This paper discusses the findings of a research project that examined the potential benefits of establishing farm savings accounts for specialty crop growers1. The primary goal of the project was to determine whether farm savings accounts would provide specialty crop growers with a useful tool for managing financial risk. The project examined how various farm savings account proposals ultimately impacted the benefits that specialty crop growers would receive from the accounts.

SEGMENTING THE COMMERCIAL PRODUCER MARKET FOR AGRICULTURAL INPUTS AgEcon
Gloy, Brent A.; Akridge, Jay T..
A cluster analysis procedure was used to develop a market segmentation of U.S. crop and livestock farms with annual sales in excess of $100,000. The results indicate that four distinct segments exist: convenience buyers, balance buyers, price buyers, and performance buyers. Differences in preferences across these segments have important implications for the marketing strategies of agricultural input suppliers.

Economic Analysis of Anaerobic Digestion Systems and the Financial Incentives Provided by the New York State Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) Customer-Sited Tier (CST) Anaerobic Digester Gas (ADG)-to-Electricity Program AgEcon
Enahoro, Dolapo K.; Gloy, Brent A..
This paper conducts a financial analysis of anaerobic digestion systems on dairy farms and describes a financial model developed for this purpose. The model is flexible and can be utilized with farm-specific data to assist in the evaluation of an anaerobic digestion system. The model is illustrated with two sources of data. The “base” case is the more flexible model and the parameters to utilize the model were developed from a wide range of resources. The second model is meant to be used in conjunction with FarmWare 3.1 which was developed and distributed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s AgStar Program. The analysis also explicitly incorporates the financial incentives offered under the New York State Energy Research and Development...

Farm Savings Accounts: Examining Income Variablility, Eligibility, and Benefits AgEcon
Gloy, Brent A.; LaDue, Eddy L.; Cuykendall, Charles H..
Government subsidized farm savings accounts have gained attention as possible risk management tools. These accounts encourage farmers to set aside funds in high income years to be drawn upon in low income years. This study considers two potential savings programs, Farm and Ranch Risk Management (FARRM) accounts and Counter-Cyclical (CC) farm savings accounts. FARRM accounts use tax deferral as the primary incentive for participation and under CC accounts the government would match farmer deposits up to $5,000. This report examines the potential benefits of these accounts for New York dairy farmers. The study illustrates how the selection of different income to define eligibility will impact the potential eligibility and benefits received by the accounts....

DAIRY FARM MANAGEMENT AND LONG-TERM FARM FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE: EVIDENCE FROM PANEL DATA AgEcon
Gloy, Brent A.; Hyde, Jeffrey; LaDue, Eddy L..
The financial performance and relationships between several management factors and farm financial performance are examined in a panel data set of 107 New York dairy farms. The overall level of compound and annual return on assets of the farms considered in this study was quite low. However, the evidence clearly suggests that the most profitable and least profitable farms are consistently so. Correlations of the yearly rankings of farm profitability were always positive and significantly different from zero. Two regression models were estimated in an effort to identify management factors that influence profitability. In general, the models explain a relatively high degree of the variation in both compound return on assets and annual return on assets....

The Paradox of Risk Balancing: Do Risk-reducing Policies Lead to More Risk for Farmers? AgEcon
Cheng, Mei-luan; Gloy, Brent A..
The study presents stochastic optimal control/dynamic programming (SOC/DP) to derive the optimal debt level and consumption in farm models concerning two sources of uncertainty: the return on assets and interest rate. The SOC/DP analytic framework is used to analyze the impacts of risk-reducing farm policies on farm’s financial and risk adjustments. The results show the violations of the risk-balancing concept, which theorizes that risk-reducing farm policies may lead to increases in financial leverage, total risk, and the expected returns. Also, this study examines the extent to which the estimates of the optimal debt level are biased when interest rate risk is ignored.

EXAMINING THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF FEDERALLY SUBSIDIZED FARM SAVINGS ACCOUNTS FOR DAIRY FARMERS AgEcon
Enahoro, Dolapo K.; Gloy, Brent A..
Financial data from a panel of New York dairy farms was analyzed to examine the potential benefits of establishing federally subsidized farm savings accounts for dairy farmers. The paper examines whether farmers would have sufficient cash flow to fund the accounts, how the accounts would influence farm income variability, and how program design influences eligibility for the benefits received from the accounts.

Case Studies on the Use of Crop Insurance in Managing Risk AgEcon
Gloy, Brent A.; Staehr, A. Edward.
Managing the risk associated with farming is challenging. Fortunately, farmers have a variety of risk management tools at their disposal. This series of case studies examines how crop insurance can be used to manage some of the risks faced by farmers. The examples illustrate how crop insurance purchases would impact the returns generated to a farming enterprise. While the examples cover a variety of commodities and insurance products, they do not consider every possible risk that might arise. Likewise, they do not consider all of the possible financial situations that might be experienced by a farmer. Instead, they focus on highlighting how crop insurance impacts the profitability of the farm. Companion spreadsheets are available for all of the examples so...
