World Soybean Demand: An Elasticity Analysis and Long-Term Projections AgEcon
Masuda, Tadayoshi; Goldsmith, Peter D..
Soybeans are one of the most valuable crops in the world and are characterized by their multi-purpose uses: food, feed, fuel and other industrial usages such as paint, inks, and plastics. Out of 183.9 million tons of world supply/demand of soybeans in 2001-03 year, about 10% of them were directly consumed as food (5.9%) or feed (3.8%) but 84.2% of them were crushed into soyoil and soymeal. Soyoil is mainly processed to vegetable oil for human consumption and recently used as a biodiesel feedstock. Soymeal is used not only as feed for livestock (especially for pork and poultry due to its low fiber level) and aquaculture, but also as a good source of protein for the human diet in a variety of forms in different cultures. This paper analyzes the...

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY PROTECTION AND THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETING OF AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY: FIRM AND HOST COUNTRY IMPACTS AgEcon
Goldsmith, Peter D.; Ramos, Gabriel; Steiger, Carlos.
The protection of intellectual property rights has been a contentious issue over the last 20 years. Industrialized nations have moved to knowledge-based economies and simultaneously trade barriers have fallen, making intellectual property vulnerable. Adding to this vulnerability are conflicting international institutional environments, belief systems, and economic realities. The debate over IPR protection has become a significant global trade issue pitting the net- technology producing North against the net-technology consuming South. The North maintains a comprehensive IPR institutional environment and actively employs enforcement mechanisms. The South on the other hand, is more conflicted. While in the last ten years many Southern countries have...

Strategic Positioning Under Agricultural Structural Change: A Critique of Long Jump Co-operative Ventures AgEcon
Goldsmith, Peter D.; Gow, Hamish R..
This study utilizes strategic management theory to analyze the recent proliferation in non-commodity vertical integration producer-owned businesses in the US. The paper introduces the notion of the Value Creation Triad where ownership, competency, and control need to be aligned for success. Very related to the Triad concept is the differentiation in strategy between long and short jumping. The paper presents an empirical case of successful vertical integration by a New Zealand lamb cooperative.

Bio Energy Entry Timing from a Resource Based View and Organizational Ecology Perspective AgEcon
Ng, Desmond W.; Goldsmith, Peter D..
Recent changes in U.S. energy policy have prompted the growth of the bio energy market. The ability to quickly enter and respond to the opportunities of this market is critical to an agribusiness’ success. Understanding entry into this rapidly growing bio energy market, however, is not well understood. In drawing on management theories of the Resource Based View (RBV) and that of Organizational Ecology, this study develops a conceptual and dynamic programming model to explain the entry behaviors of different types of bio energy businesses. A contribution of this study is it demonstrates that bio energy entry decisions emphasize a basic trade-off involving gains from a commitment to specialized, and correspondingly higher cost assets, and gains from...

FIRMS, INCENTIVES, AND THE SUPPLY OF FOOD SAFETY: A FORMAL MODEL OF GOVERNMENT ENFORCEMENT AgEcon
Goldsmith, Peter D.; Turan, Nesve A.; Gow, Hamish R..
Recent instances of significant food safety breeches in both meat and biotechnology challenge traditional safety efforts. A formal model utilizing agency theory is used to explore the power relationships between the regulator and the firm. Fundamental issues effecting firms’' supply of safety are demonstrated and alternative corrective mechanisms are discussed.

Industrial Illegitimacy and Negative Externalities: the Case of the Illinois Livestock Industry AgEcon
Pereira, Filipe; Goldsmith, Peter D..
An industry's legitimacy depends on stakeholders' perceptions and assessments of the appropriateness of its behavior across a wide array of settings. While products and services may be highly valued, and in some cases essential, business externalities serve as a powerful counterforce undermining legitimacy. The work draws on the theory of industrial legitimacy and employs a taxonomy of four different legitimacy sub components; pragmatic, regulative, normative, and cognitive. The paper identifies how externalities affect an industry's legitimacy and the relative contribution of each sub component. The research then empirically tests the theory using the case of the Illinois livestock industry.

Global Shifts in Agro-Industrial Capital and the Case of Soybean Crushing: Implications for Managers and Policy Makers AgEcon
Goldsmith, Peter D.; Li, Bing; Fruin, Jerry E.; Hirsch, Rodolfo.
Tremendous shifts are occurring in the location of agro-industrial capital around the globe. To focus discussion on this topic a session was convened at the annual meeting of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association in Montreux, Switzerland in June of 2004. The session brought together researchers and industry leaders to better understand these dramatic shifts and the implications they hold for the agri-food system. The following article emerges from that session. The first part of the article provides the context for the discussion by looking at global shifts in soybean processing investment. The second part entails reaction by three industry panelists.

STRUCTURAL CHANGE OR LOGICAL INCREMENTALISM? TURBULENCE IN THE GLOBAL MEAT SYSTEM AgEcon
Goldsmith, Peter D.; Salvador, Antonio; Knipe, Dar; Kendall, Elaine.
In the last ten years the global meat industry has encountered numerous critical events related to food safety and food quality. These events in turn have caused the industry to re-evaluate how the meat supply chain functions and how to service the new social attributes demanded in the market place. Issues like source-verified, non-GMO, and organic are becoming important sources of product differentiation. How should firms in the meat supply chain respond? This study uses a needs assessment approach with meat supply chain managers and direct cataloguing of retail meat cases to better understand how the US meat supply chain is reacting to the turbulence in the industry.

USING SPATIAL ECONOMETRICS TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF SWINE PRODUCTION ON RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY VALUES AgEcon
Kim, Jungik; Goldsmith, Peter D.; Thomas, Michael H..
A spatial hedonic model is developed to assess monetary harm of confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) on property values, taking explicitly spatial dependence in property values into account. Spatial autocorrelation was found in the form of spatial lag dependence, not spatial error dependence. When spatial lag dependence is explicitly taken into account, on average the impact is reduced by 18%. The magnitude of the spatial autoregressive parameter was about 0.2 for the 1-mile distance band, meaning one-fifth of the house value could be explained by the values of the neighboring houses.

TOWARD THE EFFICIENT PRODUCTION OF THE DISCOMMODITY OF ANIMAL ODOR: A HEDONIC PRICE APPROACH TO ECONOMIES OF SCALE AgEcon
Thomas, Michael H.; Goldsmith, Peter D.; Milla, Katherine; Stratis, Nicholas; Bruton, Natasha.
Controversy surrounding confined animal feeding operations (CAFO) is becoming more commonplace. In several regions of the country CAFOs and local residents have had disputes over odors emanating from these operations. Viewing the CAFO as jointly producing products with utility (e.g., meat) and disutility (e.g., foul odor), it is possible to determine an efficient level of production for both products that is market-based. The authors propose a hedonic price model based upon real-estate transactions adjacent to CAFOs to establish a market-based estimate of the degree and extent of odor disutility. Using the results of the hedonic model, the authors suggest that a simple model of odor dispersal can be used to address the issue of economies of scale...

CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIC ALLIANCES IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY AgEcon
Adams, Claire-Louise; Goldsmith, Peter D..
This paper focuses on strategic fuzzy alliances (SFAs) and the role of trust in business-to-business relationships. First, a theoretical model of governance choice involving strategic alliances is developed, integrating the Shapiro, Sheppard, and Cheraskin (1992) taxonomy of trust into a neoinstitutional framework. Second, this model, based on transaction theory, is then used to generate necessary and sufficient conditions for trust-based agreements. The third component of this paper is an empirical model, which tests the above theory. Finally, managerial implications from the results are discussed.

ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE INDICATORS AND EXECUTIVE-EMPLOYEE RISK SHARING AgEcon
Goldsmith, Peter D.; Basak, Rishi.
A principal-agent approach is used to address issues of environmental risk sharing within a firm. The principal (top management), fearing penalties for environmental damages, wants to avoid environmental harm and induce the agent (employee manipulating hazardous materials) to take appropriate actions to achieve due diligence.
