Impact of a river flash flood on microbial carbon and nitrogen production in a Mediterranean Lagoon (Thau Lagoon, France) ArchiMer
Fouilland, E.; Trottet, A.; Bancon-montigny, C.; Bouvy, M.; Le Floc'H, E.; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Hatey, E.; Mas, S.; Mostajir, B.; Nouguier, J.; Pecqueur, D.; Rochelle-newall, E.; Rodier, C.; Roques, C.; Salles, C.; Tournoud, M. -g.; Vidussi, F..
Over half of the total nitrogen, phosphorus, silicate and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loading was discharged from the Wile River into the Thau Lagoon waters within the first five days of what was considered to be the autumn flash flood period. Such loads represented about 8% and 3% of the yearly averaged total nitrogen and phosphorus load in Thau Lagoon, respectively. Although this event affected >20% of the total lagoon volume, river trace metal loads contributed apparently only weakly to the increase in labile trace metal concentrations in the lagoon surface waters. Differences between theoretical dilution values and observed values were also noticed for phosphate, silicate and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. DOC losses (10-50%)...

ArchiMer
Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bouchoucha, Marc; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Andral, Bruno.

Assessing variability in the ratio of metal concentrations measured by DGT-type passive samplers and spot sampling in European seawaters ArchiMer
Rodríguez, Jose German; Amouroux, Isabelle; Belzunce-segarra, María Jesús; Bersuder, Philippe; Bolam, Thi; Caetano, Miguel; Carvalho, Inês; Correia Dos Santos, Margarida; Fones, Gary R.; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Guesdon, Stephane; Larreta, Joana; Marras, Barbara; Mchugh, Brendan; Menet-nédélec, Florence; Menchaca, Iratxe; Gabet, Vanessa Millán; Montero, Natalia; Nolan, Martin; Regan, Fiona; Robinson, Craig D.; Rosa, Nuno; Sanz, Marta Rodrigo; Schintu, Marco; White, Blánaid; Zhang, Hao.
The current study evaluates the effect of seawater physico-chemical characteristics on the relationship between the concentration of metals measured by Diffusive Gradients in Thin films (DGT) passive samplers (i.e., DGT-labile concentration) and the concentrations measured in discrete water samples. Accordingly, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure the total dissolved metal concentrations in the discrete water samples and the labile metal concentrations obtained by DGT samplers; additionally, lead and cadmium conditional labile fractions were determined by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV) and total dissolved nickel was measured by Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CSV). It can be concluded that, in general, the median...

Comparing passive sampling, mussel caging and biomarkers for the evaluation of water quality for European Directives in Normandy coastal waters (France) ArchiMer
Menet-nedelec, Florence; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Maheux, Frank; Simon, Benjamin.
In the scope of the Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC) implementation, the aim of this work was to compare the response of different emerging tools to evaluate the chemical status of water bodies in Normandy coastal waters (France). These tools included passive samplers foreseen in future evaluation campaigns in France as a replacement for bulk seawater sampling (i.e. Diffusive Gradient in Thin films (DGT), and Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler (POCIS)). They were deployed at three contrasted sites in terms of pollution level along the Normandy coast, simultaneously to mussel caging, in which three common biomarkers were analysed at the end of the experiment. This work highlighted the operational challenge of deploying passive samplers...

Andral, Bruno; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Cuet, Pascale; Bigot, Lionel; Turquet, Jean; Nicet, Jean Benoit.

ArchiMer
Thouvenin, Benedicte; Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
Within the framework of the "Contaminants cycle and modeling" project of the BE department ("Biogeochemistry and Ecotoxicology") in Ifremer, two chemical contaminant modeling software were developed between 1998 and 2011 (Gonzalez JL, 2017): the MORGAN model (Model behavior of ORGANic contaminants in an aquatic environment) and the MOCO model (Surface Complexation MOdel for metallic COntaminants). These two models had been brought together in a single "zero-dimensional" software (known as MOMO), which made it possible to simulate the various processes affecting the behavior of chemical contaminants in a homogeneous mass of water (biodegradation, adsorption/desorption, photolysis, hydrolysis, volatilization, surface complexation, cation exchange,...

Modelling Pb and Cd dynamics in the Seine estuary ArchiMer
Thouvenin, Benedicte; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Boutier, Bernard; Le Hir, Pierre.
The Seine estuary (France) is currently one of the world's most contaminated estuaries, due in particular to its high cadmium and lead content. Proper understanding of contaminant transfer, transformation and retention mechanisms throughout the estuary and up to the adjacent marine zone require a range of studies involving data collections, experiments, and modeling tool. A multivariable transport model (SiAM-3D) was used to simulate dissolved and particulate transport and it is applied to several calculation grids; a speciation model (MOCO) was used to select key species and obtain a schematic system representation. The coupled model for Cd and Pb was compared with field measurements. The complementary character of various tools (model applied to annual...

Modeling trace metal accumulation in the mediterranean mussel, mytilus galloprovincialis ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. In this purpose, modeling metal dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. It allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. To calibrate such a model, kinetic experiments on uptake and elimination were conducted on three Mediterranean sites chosen on the basis of their different nutritive and chemical characteristics.

Application of POCIS for the monitoring of pesticides, pharmaceuticals and alkylphenols in marine water ArchiMer
Tapie, Nathalie; Munaron, Dominique; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Budzinski, Helene.
With the new European legislation (the Water Framework Directive, 2000/60/EC), the decision makers responsible for the assessment of the environmental contamination require simple monitoring tools. Passive sampling methods seem to be promising tools for the sampling of polar organic compounds in water, especially in marine waters where important dilutions and low concentrations are usual. They are taking into account the temporal variability and integrating the contamination over period of time. This work presents a study, on a large scale, of the contamination of French Mediterranean coastal waters realized in partnership with the Water Agency Rhône Méditerranée Corse (AERMC), and Coastal Water Quality Offices (CQEL).

Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Munaron, Dominique; Andral, Bruno; Sargian, Peggy; Tomasino, Corinne; Guyomarch, J.; Van Ganse, S..

Role of particle sorption properties in the behavior and speciation of trace metals in macrotidal estuaries: The cadmium example ArchiMer
Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Dange, Catherine; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Boutier, Bernard.
The role of particles in the fate and speciation of trace metals in macrotidal estuaries was studied using a surface complexation model (MOCO). Cadmium was selected as the target metal contaminant due to its reactivity in estuaries: cadmium behavior is mainly controlled by heterogeneous processes (sorption/desorption) related to salinity and suspended matter gradients. Various scenarios of suspended matter distribution according to salinity were simulated. The impact of surface properties (specific surface area, density of surface sites, acido-basic properties, and complexation constant) was evaluated using data collected on particles from the Gironde, Loire, and Seine estuaries. Our results show that particle surface properties, evaluated on the basis...

In situ kinetics of mercury bioaccumulation in mytilus galloprovincialis estimated by transplantation experiments ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. For this purpose, studying mercury dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. In situ experiments on uptake and elimination kinetics were conducted in three Mediterranean sites, chosen on the basis of their contamination levels. Mussels were transplanted from a clean area to a highly contaminated one and then transferred back to a clean site. This approach makes it possible to define bioaccumulation factors and uptake and elimination rates consistently with the real environmental conditions.

Metal measurement in aquatic environments by passive sampling methods: Lessons learning from an in situ intercomparison exercise ArchiMer
Dabrin, A.; Ghestem, J. -p.; Uher, E.; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Allan, I. J.; Schintu, M.; Montero, N.; Balaam, J.; Peinerud, E.; Miege, C.; Coquery, M..
Passive sampling devices (PS) are widely used for pollutant monitoring in water, but estimation of measurement uncertainties by PS has seldom been undertaken. The aim of this work was to identify key parameters governing PS measurements of metals and their dispersion. We report the results of an in situ intercomparison exercise on diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) in surface waters. Interlaboratory uncertainties of time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations were satisfactory (from 28% to 112%) given the number of participating laboratories (10) and ultra-trace metal concentrations involved. Data dispersion of TWA concentrations was mainly explained by uncertainties generated during DGT handling and analytical procedure steps. We highlight that DGT...
