Asymmetry of the mantle structure beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Goslin, J; Aslanian, Daniel.
Altimetry data from repetitive orbits of the GEOSAT satellite are interpreted together with sea-floor depths over the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, South of Iceland and South of the Azores. Geoid / Topography ratios indicate a strong asymmetry of the upper mantle structure in oceanic areas created since 35 My, extending several hundreds kilometers from Iceland to the Azores. A model including interaction between the MAR and two layers of mantle convection seems adequate to produce the observed asymmetry.

Small-scale crustal variability within an intraplate structure: the Crozet Bank (southern Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Recq, M; Goslin, J; Charvis, P; Operto, S.
The Crozet Bank, the easternmost region of the Crozet Plateau (austral Indian Ocean), is capped by two groups of islands which form the Crozet Archipelago (Terres Australes and Antarctiques Francaises). A N-S-trending 2 km deep basin, the Indivat Basin, extends between the two groups of islands and bisects the Crozet Bank into two separate domains. The interpretation of the KeOBS8 seismic refraction profile shot during the KeOBS/MD66 cruise (January-February 1991) over the eastern Crozet Plateau was carried out by ray tracing and the computation of synthetic seismograms. This interpretation leads to a rather complex seismic structure and outlines a pronounced eastward crustal thinning from 16.5 to 10 km at the expense of layer 2. The thinning of the crust...

Middle Cretaceous sediments from the eastern part of walvis ridge ArchiMer
Pastouret, Léo; Goslin, J.
THE Walvis Ridge is one of the most conspicuous features of the South Atlantic. It extends from near Tristan da Cunha on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the African continental margin and has three main segments. The western segment is oriented SW-NE, the central one N-S and the eastern one SSW-NNE. The Walvis Ridge may have kept pace with the opening of the South Atlantic which started in the Early Cretaceous1-6, either by transform fault mechanisms7-8 or by a mantle hot spot and plume 9-12. The eastern segment is thought to have been built throughout the Middle Cretaceous, that is, between 120 m.y. ago and 80 m.y. ago13-15. We report information obtained from an investigation of the age and depositional conditions of sedimentary rock recovered during the Walda...
