In this section, a new focus is given on the ocean response induced by Tropical Cyclones. Tropical Cyclones are among the most devastating and destructive natural hazards. Unfortunately, predicting the intensity and evolution of such individual event is still extremely difficult, owing to various internal and environmental factors, including interactions with the ocean interior. In that context, multiple satellite remote sensing observations are essential, and today, combined with denser ARGO interior measurements, the upper ocean responses to moving tropical cyclones can be more efficiently captured and monitored.

Realistic ocean state prediction and its validation rely on the availability of high quality in situ observations. To detect data errors, adequate quality check procedures must be designed. This paper presents procedures that take advantage of the ever-growing observation databases that provide climatological knowledge of the ocean variability in the neighborhood of an observation location. Local validity intervals are used to estimate binarily whether the observed values are considered as good or erroneous. Whereas a classical approach estimates validity bounds from first- and second-order moments of the climatological parameter distribution, that is, mean and variance, this work proposes to infer them directly from minimum and maximum observed values....

[1] Acombination of surface wind speed (SWS) and sea state variables, derived from quasi-simultaneous airborne lidar and radar measurements, made in the framework of the Flux, Etat de mer et Teledetection en Condition de fetcH variable (FETCH) experiment, is used to analyze the evolution of surface roughness length, neutral drag coefficient, and friction velocity coefficient with fetch in the first hundred kilometers offshore over the Gulf of Lion, Western Mediterranean. In the past two decades, the Argo Program has collected, processed, and distributed over two million vertical profiles of temperature and salinity from the upper two kilometers of the global ocean. A similar number of subsurface velocity observations near 1,000 dbar have also been collected. This paper recounts the history of the global Argo Program, from its aspiration arising out of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, to the development and implementation of its instrumentation and telecommunication systems, and the various technical problems encountered. The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) Ocean State Report (OSR) provides an annual report of the state of the global ocean and European regional seas for policy and decision-makers with the additional aim of increasing general public awareness about the status of, and changes in, the marine environment. The CMEMS OSR draws on expert analysis and provides a 3-D view (through reanalysis systems), a view from above (through remote-sensing data) and a direct view of the interior (through in situ measurements) of the global ocean and the European regional seas. The CORA 5.2 dataset for global in situ temperature and salinity measurements: data description and validation ArchiMer

We present the Copernicus in situ ocean dataset of temperature and salinity (version 5.2). Ocean subsurface sampling varied widely from 1950 to 2017 as a result of changes in instrument technology and the development of in situ observational networks (in particular, tropical moorings for the Argo program). Thus, global ocean temperature data coverage on an annual basis grew from 10 % in 1950 (30 % for the North Atlantic basin) to 25 % in 2000 (60 % for the North Atlantic basin) and reached a plateau exceeding 80 % (95 % for the North Atlantic Ocean) after the deployment of the Argo program.
