Valuing Animal Welfare Labels with Experimental Auctions: What do we learn from Consumers? AgEcon
Gracia, Azucena; Loureiro, Maria L.; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr..
In this paper two types of experimental auctions (endowment and full bidding) are used to elicit consumer preferences towards different labels providing information on animal welfare practices. The three types of labeling schemes evaluated are the comprehensive “animal welfare label”, the “good animal housing”, and the “good human-animal relation and transport conditions”. Our results suggest that there are no statistically significant differences in the elicited values across labelling schemes. However, there are clear differences across auction types. Bids elicited from auctions in which participants were endowed with the product are higher than those from auctions in which participants had to fully bid for the product. Recommendations and policy...

On the use of honesty priming task to mitigate hypothetical bias in choice AgEcon
de Magistris, Tiziana; Gracia, Azucena; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr..
We test whether the use of an honesty priming task from the social psychology literature can help mitigate hypothetical bias in stated preference choice experiments (CE). Using a between-sample design, we conducted experiments with five treatments: (1) hypothetical CE without cognitive task, (2) hypothetical CE with cheap talk script, (3) hypothetical CE with neutral priming task, (4) hypothetical CE with honesty priming task, and (5) non-hypothetical CE. Results generally suggest that marginal willingness to pay estimates from treatment 4 where subjects are given honesty priming task before the choice experiment are not statistically different from marginal valuations from treatment 5 where subjects are in a non-hypothetical choice experiment. Values from...

La certificacion como estrategia para la recuperacion de la confianza del consumidor en la adquisicion de la carne de ternera AgEcon
Barrena Figueroa, Ramo; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Gil, Jose Maria; Gracia, Azucena; Rivera, Luis M..

Introducing Different Land Uses (Irrigated and Non-Irrigated) in Policy Analysis Modelling for Mediterranean Countries AgEcon
Casado, Jose Maria; Gracia, Azucena.
The arable crop sector in Spain is highly dependent of the Community subsidies and account for 33% of total transfers received by the Community. Then, it is expected that the introduction of the Single Farm Payment (SFP) will drive important changes in the arable crop production in Spain. The quantitative assessment of the SFP impacts on the arable crop sector in Spain is the overall objective of this paper. To achieve this goal, an econometric, dynamic, multi-product and partial equilibrium commodity model has been built disaggregating between irrigated and non-irrigated land use for cereals called Spanish Econometric Simulation of Agricultural Policies (SESAP). Results indicated that the introduction of the SFP has only induced considerable changes...

Estudio de las preferencias de consumidores y distribuidores especializados respecto del producto ecologico AgEcon
Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Sanjuan, Ana Isabel; Gil Roig, Jose Maria; Gracia, Azucena; Soler, Francisco.

THE EFFECT OF THE NEW SINGLE FARM PAYMENT IN IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE: THE CASE OF SPAIN AgEcon
Gracia, Azucena; de Magistris, Tiziana; Casado, Jose Maria.
The aim of the paper is to provide an econometric, dynamic, multi-product and partial equilibrium model for the Spanish agriculture able to analyse the effects of the SFP and subsequent reforms in both the irrigated and non-irrigated cultivation. In the case of the EU Mediterranean countries, irrigated agriculture is very relevant because farmers in irrigated land get higher productivity and returns. However, irrigation is also the source of a number of environmental concerns, such as over-abstraction of water from subterranean aquifers, irrigation driven erosion, soil salinisation, etc.. The new decoupling direct payments from production will reduce many of the incentives to intensive production. The developed model is called Spanish Econometric...

Export Performance and Innovation Activities in the Agrifood Industry: A Recursive Estimation Approach AgEcon
Ameur, Mehrez; Gracia, Azucena.
Agrifood firms operate in a more global, saturated and competitive market than other manufacturing firms, and they have smaller size. These firms certainly need to define appropriate strategies related to accessing the international market and to investing in innovative activities. This two decisions are related to firms size because as Krugman states international trade is not only explained by differences in technology between countries but also by firms' desire to extend their sales in foreign markets to take advantage of the economies of scales. Therefore, it seems to exist a simultaneous relation between firm size, exports and innovative activities. The aim of this paper is to analyse agrifood firms' decisions on these three strategies: export...

MARKET SEGMENTATION AND WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR ORGANIC PRODUCTS IN SPAIN AgEcon
Gil, Jose Maria; Gracia, Azucena; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes.
In recent years, consumer concerns on environmental and health issues related to food products have increased and, as a result, the demand for organically grown production has grown. Higher costs of production and retailer margins generate a gap between real prices and those that consumers are willing to pay for organic food. In this article, consumer willingness to pay for organic food in two Spanish regions is analyzed. Markets in both regions are segmented considering consumers lifestyles. Results indicate that consumers concerned about healthy diet and environmental degradation are the most likely to buy organic food, and are willing to pay a high premium. Organic attributes are easily identified in perishable products as the premium consumers...

Willingness to pay for a local food label for lamb meat in Spain AgEcon
Gracia, Azucena; de Magistris, Tiziana; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr..
The aim of the paper is to assess consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for a local food produced in a less-favoured area in the Aragon region (Spain). In particular, we examine whether consumers value lamb meat products (lamb and suckling lamb) labelled as “Ojinegra from Teruel”, traditionally produced in these area. We use a nonhypothetical experimental auction to elicit Spanish consumers’ WTP for “Ojinegra from Teruel” labelled lamb products. Results show that consumers are willing to pay a positive premium for a lamb and suckling lamb labelled as “Ojinegra from Teruel”.

IDENTIFYING CONSUMER VALUATION PATTERNS OF ALTERNATIVE NUTRITION AND HEALTH LABELS COMBINATIONS: EVIDENCE FROM SPAIN AgEcon
Barreiro-Hurlé, Jesús; Gracia, Azucena; de Magistris, Tiziana.
The provision of nutrition and health information on food labels is increasing as an industry and regulation answer to the growing consumer concern with diet-health relationships. Prior research has shown that the presence of this information on food labels is valued by consumers; however there is still no clear pattern on which labelling options are more valued and how different consumers value the different options. This paper analyses the results of a choice experiment conducted to identify the effect of multiple health and nutrition information sources on consumer food choice, taking into account preference heterogeneity using a latent class approach. Results show that different consumer groups can be identified with clearly distinguishable valuation...

Co-operation and economic relationship as determinants for competitiveness in the food sector: the Spanish wheat to bread chain AgEcon
de Magistris, Tiziana; Gracia, Azucena.
The objective of the paper is to investigate the impact of co-operation amongst stakeholders of the food chain on enterprise competitiveness. The analysis focuses on the Spanish wheat to bread chain. A theoretical model is developed which covers the main components that define competitiveness (profitability, turnover, market share, customer loyalty and product quality), quality supply chain relationship (trust, commitment and satisfaction) and the main factors explaining supply chain relationship (i.e. quality and frequency of the communication, personal bounds, etc.). The Spanish wheat to bread supply chain has been chosen to empirically test the model. This sector is very fragmented all along the chain, with a high number of wheat farmers, millers and...

When more is less: the effect of multiple health and nutritional labels in food product choice AgEcon
Barreiro-Hurlé, Jesús; Gracia, Azucena; de Magistris, Tiziana.
Consumers are facing increasing information on health and nutritional aspects of foods, an important source of which is that presented in food packages. Prior research has identified that this information is positively valued, but the effect of multiple information items simultaneously is not so well understood. A choice experiment has been conducted to identify the effect of multiple health and nutrition information sources in two products which represent both a healthy and less-healthy food (pork Frankfurt sausages and plain yoghurt respectively). Results show that although highly heterogeneous, preferences seem to positively value individual information items and negatively value the presence of more than one item, specially if the item is a health...

Confidence in the Beef Production System as a Key Factor to Mitigate the Impact of BSE on Beef Consumption AgEcon
Barrena Figueroa, Ramo; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Gracia, Azucena; Gil, Jose Maria.
Recent food scares in the food market has caused a reduction in consumer's confidence in the food system that it has induced a significant reduction in consumption in a sector, the beef sector that was already characterized by a saturated trend in quantity terms. In this context, all participants in the beef production system are facing to a great challenge, to retrieve consumer's confidence in the food chain and to mitigate the reduction in beef consumption. The aim of the paper is to analyse the impact of consumer's confidence in the food system as well as other factors on the explanation of food consumption reduction. A structural modelling approach has been used to analyse factors affecting the reduction in beef consumption in two different regions...

Agri-food chain relationships in Europe – empirical evidence and implications for sector competitiveness AgEcon
Fischer, Christian; Hartmann, Monika; Reynolds, Nikolai; Leat, Philip M.K.; Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Henchion, Maeve M.; Gracia, Azucena.
The roles of business relationships in selected European agri-food chains are analysed. Using survey data from 1,442 farmers, food processors and retailers in two commodity sectors (meat and cereals) and across six different EU countries, we test the empirical relevance of several theory-based determinants influencing the choice of relationship type and the sustainability of inter-enterprise relationships. This is undertaken for the overall dataset and separately for different chain stages (farmer-processor versus the processor-retailer relationships), commodities and individual countries. Overall, we find that sector and enterprise-specific determinants seem to influence the choice of a certain relationship type while chain-internal, dyadic factors affect...

Understanding Market potential for biodiesel in Spain: A Pilot study based on consumer preferences AgEcon
Gracia, Azucena; Barreiro-Hurlé, Jesús; Perez y Perez, Luis.
The production and use of biodiesel is an important alternative in Europe to diminish the emission of gases in order to fulfill the Kyoto protocol goals. Supported by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the production of biodiesel has increased in Europe but the consumption is only of considerable importance in some countries. In Spain, the consumption of biodiesel is still low compared to other EU countries. The aim of the paper is to analyze consumers’ preferences for biodiesel in Spain. To do that a choice experimental approach has been used to assess consumers’ valuation of different diesel options and calculate the willingness to pay for biodiesel. The data come from a recent survey conducted in Spain (Region of Aragón). Results indicate that diesel...

Attitudes of Retailers and Consumers toward the EU Traceability and Labeling System for Beef AgEcon
Gracia, Azucena; Zeballos, Gabriela.
The spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Europe has induced EU policy makers to implement a mandatory traceability and labeling system in the beef supply chain. This paper analyzes consumer and retailer attitudes toward this system. Data used in the study were collected through two surveys of consumers and retailers in the province of Aragón, Spain, in 2002. Consumer and retailer attitudes toward beef traceability are examined to identify main underlying factors. Using these factors, consumers and retailers are segmented into homogenous groups according to their attitudes toward traceability for beef. Results indicate that both consumers and retailers highly value the positive aspects related to the traceability and labeling system for beef,...
