Genotypic and phenotypic detection of efflux pump in Rhodococcus equi BJM
Gressler,Letícia Trevisan; Vargas,Agueda Castagna de; Costa,Mateus Matiuzzi da; Pötter,Luciana; Silveira,Bibiana Petri da; Sangioni,Luis Antônio; Botton,Sônia de Avila.
The req_39680 gene, associated to a putative efflux system, was detected in 60% (54/90) of R. equi isolates by PCR. The phenotypic expression of efflux mechanism was verified in 20% of the isolates using ethidium bromide. For the first time, the expression of efflux mechanism was demonstrated in R. equi.

Biofilm formation by Prototheca zopfii isolated from clinical and subclinical bovine mastitis in distinct growth conditions under different dyes Ciência Rural
Ely,Valessa Lunkes; Gressler,Letícia Trevisan; Sutili,Fernando Jonas; Ribeiro,Márcio Garcia; Costa,Mateus Matiuzzi da; Vargas,Agueda Castagna de; Botton,Sônia de Avila.
ABSTRACT: Prototheca spp. have been reported as an emergent environmental mastitis pathogen in several countries. Biofilm formation is a significant factor associated with different degrees of virulence developed by many microorganisms, including Prototheca spp. The present study aimed to compare two growth conditions and two staining dyes to determine which combination was more appropriate to evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the production of biofilm by P. zopfii. Biofilm formation was evaluated in polystyrene microplates under static and dynamic growth conditions and staining with crystal violet or cotton blue dye. All P. zopfii isolates from cows with mastitis were classified as biofilm-producers in all growth conditions and staining. The...

Susceptibility profile of Brazilian Rhodococcus equi isolates against azithromycin, clarithromycin and erythromycin Ciência Rural
Gressler,Letícia Trevisan; Silveira,Bibiana Petri da; Schwab,Marcelo Luís; Vargas,Agueda Castagna de; Pötter,Luciana; Botton,Sônia de Avila.
Rhodococcus equi infection treatment is usually a macrolide (azithromycin - AZM, clarithromycin - CLR and erythromycin - ERY) and rifampicin combination. However, resistance cases have been reported, especially for ERY. In view of the need of a study about Brazilian isolates susceptibility profile, this study aimed to characterize the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the macrolides - AZM, CLR and ERY - against 44 R. equi isolates. It was found all isolates CLR and AZM sensitive; however, for ERY, 27% (12/44) were classified as intermediate sensitivity. R. equi Brazilian isolates used here showed a large susceptibility profile, except against ERY, for which it was observed some resistance evidence. In order to avoid failures in the equine...

Bovine genital campylobacteriosis: main features and perspectives for diagnosis and control Ciência Rural
Balzan,Cláudia; Ziech,Rosangela Estel; Gressler,Letícia Trevisan; Vargas,Agueda Palmira Castagna de.
ABSTRACT: Bovine genital campylobacteriosis (BGC) is a venereal disease caused by Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis. In countries with large cattle herds, such as Brazil, where the use of natural breeding as a reproductive strategy is a common practice, BGC is considered an important cause of reproductive failure and economic losses. In these cases, the bull is the asymptomatic carrier of the bacterium and the infected females can have infertility and even abortions. The techniques for the diagnosis of C. fetus are isolation in culture medium and identification by biochemical tests, immunofluorescence, immunoenzymatic assays and molecular techniques. Disease control is based on vaccination with bacterins. This review described the epidemiology,...
