A new species of the sand eel genus Bascanichthys (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae) is described from specimens found inside the stomachs of mature female numbfish Narcine bancroftii. These rays were collected as bycatch in local fisheries, using beach seines in shallow waters (5 to 10 m) in Gaira Bay (Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean). Bascanichthys gaira n.sp., is described from three specimens and can be distinguished from other species of the genus by its minute pectoral-fin base (12.324.7% of gill-opening length) and its vertebral number (189). Se determinaron aspectos bioecológicos de 561 ejemplares de Mugil incilis capturados con atarraya (75.4%) y trasmallo (24.6%) en la bahía de Cispatá entre julio y diciembre de 2007. La longitud total (LT) estuvo entre 17.5 y 44.5 cm, siendo la mayoría juveniles, lo que se refleja en el crecimiento alométrico minorante observado: W (g) = 0.01 LT (cm)2.83 (r² = 0.92). El 48% de los ejemplares fueron machos (n = 221) y el 52% hembras (n = 240); no se presentó una desviación significativa de la proporción 1:1 (χ² = 0.39; p = 0.53). La talla media de madurez sexual fue calculada en 30.5 cm de LT para los sexos combinados, 30.3 cm de LT para las hembras (n = 188) y 35.6 para los machos (n = 231). Two specimens, 565 and 715 mm total length (TL), of the dusky snake eel, Ophichthus cylindroideus, collected southwest of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean, were examined. This species was not reported by Acero and Garzón-Ferreira (1995), then it is was not listed in the Colombian marine fishes data bases. However, McCosker et al. (1989) did examine one specimen (USNM 94755, 622 mm TL) from Puerto Colombia. External morphological and morphometric data are compared, as well as some osteology features. This paper constitutes the first voucher record of the channel scabbardfish, Evoxymetopon taeniatus (Pisces: Trichiuridae) captured at Isla Aguja, Magdalena, Colombia on March 30 of 2009.
