The production structure of a selected cross-section sample of family owner-operated dairy farms is investigated using a translog variable cost function. Elasticities of scale, input substitution, and input own- and cross-price elasticities are estimated. At the sample mean herd size of 67 cows producing at 15,173 pounds of milk per cow, the elasticity of scale parameter was 1.00, implying constant returns to scale. The elasticities of substitution between feeds and hired labor and the own- and cross-price elasticities were inelastic. |

The effect that selected characteristics of a Pennsylvania hay auction has on winning bids of loads of hay are presented in this paper. Survey data from 107 buyers over the period September 1982 to April 1983 were used. Hay type, perceived quality, and the intended use of the hay were found to be significant factors in explaining prices paid per ton. Sellers could increase their revenues by producing alfalfa hay, alfalfa and legume-grass hay of higher quality, and attending marketing days with a larger number of horse feed buyers. |

The production structure of 165-hen and 200-ton turkey flocks is investigated using a translog (dual) variable cost function. The partial static equilibrium elasticities of scale, input demand, input substitution, and cross price elasticities of demand are calculated. The elasticities of scale is found to be not significantly different from one over the range of 5,900 to 9,822 birds for the hen flocks and over the range of 7,765 to 11,043 birds for the tom flocks. In general, the input demand elasticities are inelastic with the exception of the input fuel. The cross-price elasticities are in general inelastic. |

Operating cost efficiency is evaluated on Pennsylvania dairy farms using a modification of the Farrell efficient unit isoquant frontier method. Evaluating farms by herd size groups, the average measure of cost efficiency ranged from 70 to 80 percent. Farms with larger herds were more homogeneous in efficiency than farms with smaller herds. Regression analysis was used to evaluate for differences in cost efficiency by herd size group. |

The Tax Reform Act of 1986 was studied to determine its short-run impact on Pennsylvania farmers. For the 3,059 farms studied, the average increase in total tax obligation resulting from the TRA of 1986 was $446 per farm, or a 48 percent increase in federal income taxes actually paid in 1984. Differences in impact were found across farms categorized by commodity type. Egg producers were most severely impacted, while beef cattle producers least affected. In general, the increase in adjusted gross income was due to the loss of 60 percent exclusion on capital gain income. |
