The type material of Cervus nippon Temminck, 1836, present in the Leiden museum, is re-examined ; a lectotype is chosen, and a new description of lectotype and paralectotypes is given. In an attempt to determine the exact type locality or localities, the type series is compared with published descriptions of Japanese Sika and with material present in the British Museum (Nat. Hist.). The characteristics of the type series are in good agreement with those of Sika from southern Japan; the lectotype closely agrees with specimens originating from the main islands of southern Japan (southern Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku) and may have come from the surroundings of Nagasaki (Kyushu) ; the remaining type series agrees better with specimens from the Goto Islands, where... |

The hypothesis, originated by Kohlbrugge (1895) and supported by Lyon (1911), Van Bemmel (1952) and Hill (1960), that there are two taxonomically distinct muntjac (genus Muntiacus Rafinesque, 1815) on Borneo is supported by studies of abundant skin and skull material. The two are widely sympatric, so must rank as distinct species. One represents the widespread M. muntjak (Zimmermann, 1780) of southeast and south Asia, while the other is endemic. The type material of Cervulus pleiharicus Kohlbrugge, 1895 consisted of a skin and frontlet with antlers. As the skin has been lost, the frontlet is designated as lectotype. It represents M. muntjak, as does the type of M. rubidus Lyon, 1911, so that the endemic species of Borneo is without a name. It is hereby... |

Changes in the nomenclature of the Orang Utan recently proposed by Röhrer-Ertl are shown to be unnecessary. The generic name Pongo Van Wurmb, 1784, for the genus, P.s. satyrus Linnaeus, 1758, for the Sumatran subspecies, and P.s. borneensis Van Wurmb, 1784, for the Bornean subspecies, as used by Röhrer-Ertl all are invalid, and should be replaced by the correct traditional names, Pongo Lacépède, 1799, for the genus, P.p. pygmaeus (Linnaeus, 1760) for the Bornean subspecies, and P.p. abelii Lesson, 1827, for the Sumatran subspecies. |

SUMMARY Skins and skulls of Babyrousa babyrussa have been studied ; the species is divisible into three living subspecies : B. b. babyrussa (syn. frosti) from Buru and Sula, B. b. togeanensis from Malenge, and B. b. celebensis from the northern arm of Celebes. A skull from near Kulawi, central Celebes, tends towards babyrussa, and may represent a surviving population of the inadequately characterised B. b. bolabatuensis, known as a subfossil from the southern arm of Celebes. Teeth of the latter form decreased in size through time. The possibility of the species having been introduced into Buru and Sula is discussed. INTRODUCTION The remarkable babirusa (genus Babirousa Perry, 1811) attracted early notice in western scientific circles, despite its... |

The 19th-century reports on the occurrence and identity of wild asses in North-East Africa are reviewed, as well as the names applied in various publications by Fitzinger and von Heuglin, respectively. The first published name for the African wild ass, Asinus africanus Fitzinger, 1858, is a nomen nudum. The name Equus taeniopus von Heuglin, 1861 is rejected as indeterminable, as it is based on an animal that cannot be identified and may have been a hybrid between a domestic donkey and a Somali wild ass; the type has not been preserved. The first available name thus becomes Asinus africanus von Heuglin & Fitzinger, 1866. A lectotype is designated: a skull of an adult female collected by von Heuglin near Atbara River, Sudan, and present in the Museum für... |
