Delving into Choice Internals: A Joint Discrete Choice/Attribute Rating Model AgEcon
Gubanova, Tatiana; Volinskiy, Dmitriy; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Veeman, Michele M..
Multi-attribute modeling has rapidly progressed from being a novelty to becoming a widely used tool of economic research. When both choice and attribute ratings data are available, a model that makes joint use of both offers informative inference opportunities. In the present study we develop a joint model which utilizes both choice and ratings data, allows for scale usage heterogeneity, is robust to violations of utility continuity and completeness. The model is used to obtain WTP estimates for genetically-modified content and country-of-origin attributes in an survey-based study of Canola oil labeling. The median survey respondent's WTP for non-GM Canola oil was found to be CA$0.92/liter. The median WTP for non-specification of GM content was found to be...

‘Pocket and Pot’: Hypothetical Bias in a No-Free-Riding Public Contribution Game AgEcon
Gubanova, Tatiana; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; McMillan, Melville.
Hypothetical bias arises when values which people say they place on a good or service differ systematically from the values people reveal for the same good or service through actual, binding economic transactions. Studies of hypothetical bias with respect to public goods often use charitable contributions or other relatively unique goods and these studies employ a variety of mechanisms to elicit the stated and revealed values. This study proposes the inclusion of a free-rider barring random dictatorship mechanism in the standard public contribution game to investigate the issue of bias when a public good involves immediate monetary returns to subjects. Steps are taken to make the game have the look and feel of a real-world tradeoff between private...

Forecasting Organic Food Prices: Emerging Methods for Testing and Evaluating Conditional Predictive Ability AgEcon
Gubanova, Tatiana; Lohr, Luanne; Park, Timothy A..
Organic farmers, wholesalers, and retailers need price forecasts to improve their decision-making practices. This paper presents a methodology and protocol to select the best performing method from several time and frequency domain candidates. Weekly farmgate prices for organic fresh produce are used. Forecasting methods are evaluated on the basis of an aggregate accuracy measure and several out-of-sample predictive ability tests. A seasonal autoregressive method is recommended for all planning horizons. The role of better price forecasts for the agents who deal in less common organic produce is highlighted. A confirmation for the claim that the organic produce industry needs better farmgate price forecasts to grow is provided.

Forecasting Organic Food Prices: Testing and Evaluating Conditional Predictive Ability AgEcon
Park, Timothy A.; Gubanova, Tatiana; Lohr, Luanne; Escalante, Cesar L..
Organic farmers, wholesalers, and retailers need reliable price forecasts to improve their decision- making practices. This paper presents a methodology and protocol to select the best-performing method from several time and frequency domain candidates. Weekly farmgate prices for organic fresh produce are used. Forecasting methods are evaluated on the basis of an aggregate accuracy measure and several out-of-sample predictive ability tests. Combining forecasts to improve on individual forecasts is investigated.
