Massive deep-sea sulphide ore deposits discovered on the East Pacific Rise ArchiMer
Francheteau, Jean; Needham, H.d.; Choukroune, P.; Juteau, T.; Seguret, M.; Ballard, R.d.; Fox, P.j.; Normark, W.; Carranza, X; Cordoba, D.; Guerrero, J.; Rangin, C.; Bougault, Henri; Cambon, Pierre; Hekinian, Roger.
Massive ore-grade zinc, copper and iron sulphide deposits have been found at the axis of the East Pacific Rise.Although their presence on the deep ocean-floor had been predicted there was no supporting observational evidence. The East Pacific Rise deposits represent a modern analogue of Cyprus-type sulphide ores associated with ophiolitic rocks on land. They contain at least 29% zinc metal and 6% metallic copper.Their discovery will provide a new focus for deep-sea exploration, leading to new assessments of the concentration of metals in the upper layers of the oceanic crust. First manned submersible dives on the east pacific rise at 21°N (project rita) : general results ArchiMer
Francheteau, Jean; Needham, H.d.; Choukroune, P.; Juteau, T.; Seguret, M.; Ballard, R.d.; Fox, J.p.; Normark, W.r.; Carranza, A.; Cordoba, D.; Guerrero, J.; Rangin, C..
A submersible study has been conducted in February - March 1978 at the axis of the East Pacfic Rise near 21°N. The expedition CYAMEX, the first submersible program to be conducted on the East Pacific Rise, is part of the French-American-Mexican project RiTA (Rivera-Tamayo), a 3-year study devoted to detailed geological and geophysical investigations of the East Pacific Rise Crest. On the basis of the 15 dives made by CYANA in the axial area of the Rise, a morphological and tectonic zonation can be established for this moderately-fast spreading center. A narrow, 0.6 to 1.2 km wide zone of extrusion (zone 1), dominated by young lava flows, is flanked by a highly fissured and faulted zone of extension (zone 2) with a width of 1 to 2 km. Further out, zone...

The stratigraphy and regional structure of Miocene deposits in western Amazonia (Peru, Colombia and Brazil), with implications for late Neogene landscape evolution Naturalis
Wesselingh, F.P.; Hoorn, M.C.; Guerrero, J.; Räsänen, M.E.; Romero Pittmann, L.; Salo, J.A..
A biozonation based on molluscs is proposed for Miocene deposits of western Amazonia (Peru, Colombia and Brazil), commonly referred to as the Pebas Formation. The new zonation refines existing pollen zonations and provides a key for the quick assessment of the stratigraphic position of Neogene deposits in the field. The regional distribution of twelve mollusc zones reveals a structuring of geological units around the broad Iquitos-Araracuara anteclise. The structure of the subsurface appears to have been a major factor in the determination of present-day second and lower order river courses in the study area. Based on this work a biostratigraphic framework for Miocene deposits of western Amazonia, including fossiliferous deposits from adjacent basins...

Landscape evolution and depositional processes in the Miocene Amazonian Pebas lake/wetland system: evidence from exploratory boreholes in northeastern Peru. Naturalis
Wesselingh, F.P.; Guerrero, J.; Räsänen, M.E.; Romero Pittmann, L.; Vonhof, H.B..
This study of the type and scales of depositional processes and landscape development in western Amazonia during the Miocene is based on the description and interpretation of three boreholes from the Marañon basin (Peru). The Miocene Pebas Formation, and the overlying Marañon Formation and underlying Chambira Formation are lithologically characterised. An age calculation model indicates an Oligocene age for the Chambira Formation, and an Early – early late Miocene age for the Pebas Formation. The base of the Chambira Formation is placed at a sequence boundary and corresponds to the beginning of a regression. The succession was deposited in floodplains included in a RST and a LST under a seasonal climate with a pronounced dry season. The base of the Pebas...
