FOR WHOM REDUCED PRICES COUNT: A CENSORED QUANTILE REGRESSION ANALYSIS OF VEGETABLE DEMAND AgEcon
Gustavsen, Geir Waehler; Rickertsen, Kyrre.
Low consumption of vegetables is linked to many diseases. From a health perspective, the distribution of consumption is at least as important as mean consumption. We investigated the differential effects of policy changes on high- and low-consuming households by using 15,700 observations from 1986 to 1997. Many households did not purchase vegetables during the two-week survey periods and censored as well as ordinary quantile regressions were estimated. Removal of the value added tax for vegetables, income increases, and health information are unlikely to substantially increase purchases in low-consuming households. Nevertheless, information provision is cheap and best targeted at low-consuming households.

Public Policies and the Demand for Carbonated Soft Drinks: A Censored Quantile Regression Approach AgEcon
Gustavsen, Geir Waehler.
Heavy consumption of soda may contribute to obesity, strokes, and cardiac problems. From a health perspective, the distribution of the consumption is at least as important as the mean. Censored as well as ordinary quantile regression techniques were used to estimate the demand for sugary soda based on household data from 1989 to 1999. It was found that heavy drinkers are more price- and expenditure-responsive than are light drinkers. The study shows that increasing the taxes on carbonated soft drinks will lead to a small reduction in consumption for small and moderate consumers and a huge reduction for heavy consumers.

Censored Quantile Regression and Purchases of Ice Cream AgEcon
Gustavsen, Geir Waehler; Jolliffe, Dean; Rickertsen, Kyrre.
The effects on purchases of ice cream of increasing the value added tax (VAT) for less healthy foods and removing the VAT for healthy foods are estimated. The effects on high- and low-purchasing households are estimated by using quantile regressions. Many households did not purchase ice cream and censored quantile regressions are estimated by a recently developed algorithm, which is simple, robust, and performs well near the censoring point. High-purchasing households will reduce their annual per capita purchases with 1.8 kilograms corresponding to an annual reduction of more than half a kilogram of body weight.

Consumer Cohorts and Milk Purchases AgEcon
Gustavsen, Geir Waehler; Rickertsen, Kyrre.
Fluid milk is the most important product of Norwegian agriculture, and the decline in milk purchase has impact in many rural communities. By decomposing the milk purchase into cohort effects, age effects and year effects we show that the reason for the decline is that older generations purchase more milk than younger generations, and during lifetime consumption decline with age. Consequently, as younger generations replace older generations milk purchase decline. We show that towards 2021 the milk purchase will continue to fall.

Public Policies and the Demand for Vegetables AgEcon
Gustavsen, Geir Waehler; Rickertsen, Kyrre.
Increased consumption of vegetables may reduce obesity and the prevalence of cardiac diseases and cancer. Norwegians consume less vegetables than nutrition experts recommend and the per capita consumption is lower than in most European countries. To investigate the causes of low consumption, a two-step approach is used to estimate the demand segmented by nine different household types. In the first step, a probit model is estimated to investigate the decision whether to purchase traditional vegetables, salad vegetables, and industrially processed vegetables. Conditional on purchase, an almost ideal demand model is used to model how much to purchase. The own-price elasticities and total expenditure elasticities are high for traditional and industrially...

Consumer Cohorts and Demand Systems AgEcon
Gustavsen, Geir Waehler; Rickertsen, Kyrre.
The Norwegian purchases pattern of non-alcoholic beverages has changed substantially. The observed changes cannot be fully explained by changes in relative prices and income, and other variables are likely to be important. Cohort variables have not been given much attention in demand analysis. Our main contribution is to include age, period, and cohort (APC) variables into a demand system. The system is applied to purchases of non-alcoholic beverages. Wald tests show the importance of including APC variables. A Monte-Carlo analysis shows how replacing the APC variables with an age and a trend variable results in misleading age effects on milk purchases.
