Umstellung auf Vollweidehaltung mit Kurzrasenweide am Beispiel eines Praxisbetriebes aus Oberbayern Organic Eprints
Linner, Alfons; Trei, Gerriet; Hörning, Prof. Bernhard.
Aim of the study was to demonstrate the principles of a low-input system for dairy cows (“full pasture system”) using an existing organic farm as an example (case study). This system might be well suited for organic farms (low use of concentrates, natural behaviour at pasture, etc.). Experiences of the conversion of the first summer at the farm were documented (changes in milk ingredients, grass development).

Comparison of Organic and Conventional Beef-Suckler Farms in Germany Organic Eprints
Hörning, Prof. Bernhard; Feige, Martina; Dollinger, Julia.
This study aims to compare conventional and organic farms with beef-suckler herds. Addresses were collected mainly by contacting breeding associations and farmers' magazines. 216 questionnaires were evaluated (34.1% of them organic). Beef-suckler production in Germany is an extensive production system (small farms, small herd sizes, high percentage of grassland, low soil points, etc.). 39% of farms had to fulfil special regulations for extensive grassland production and 43% carried out landscape conservation measures. Farmers specialize in beef-suckler production. 60% of them are part-time farmers. Beef production amounts to two thirds of their agricultural income. Most farmers keep only beef cattle on the farms. Other farm animals are kept in small stock...

Haltung exotischer Rinder in Deutschland Organic Eprints
Blodau, Simon; Lenger, Freerk; Schwenzer, Janusch; Hörning, Prof. Bernhard.
Exotic cattle keeping in Germany is increasing (zebu, domestic water buffalo, bison). The aim of the study was to collect key features of German farms with these cattle species. Questionnaires from 20 farms keeping zebu and 21 farms keeping bison were evaluated. Five farms keeping dairy buffaloes were visited. No differences between conventional and organic farms were found.

Ökologische Tierhaltung in Brandenburg Stand und Perspektiven Organic Eprints
Trei, Gerriet; Synnatzschke, Martin; Hörning, Prof. Bernhard.
Aim of the study was to collect information about organic livestock farming in Brandenburg. In comparison with other German states, organic farms in Brandenburg are bigger and the soil quality is worse. Thus, beef-suckler and sheep production is more important than dairy, pig or poultry production. Farmers mention problems with climate (low rainfall), lack of agricultural area and problems with the marketing.
