Commercial-scale lettuce and celery trials conducted from 1998-2000 in California's Salinas Valley showed that IPM pest control treatments compared favorably with conventional pesticide treatments in terms of yield and quality, but that pest control costs per carton were from $.02 to $.09 higher in the IPM plots.

CONSUMER ATTITUDES TOWARD ORGANICALLY GROWN LETTUCE AgEcon

This research shows that approximately 29 percent of lettuce purchases in California expect to purchase an organically grown lettuce product in the future. Organic lettuce purchasers are more likely to be female, have a higher household income and a higher level of education. Consumers are concerned with the freshness, quality, price, and environmental impact of the lettuce they purchase.

The Economic Impact of California Specialty Crops – A Regional Perspective AgEcon

The goal of this study, conducted by California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is to analyze the economic impact of specialty crops at the county level in California. The top five specialty crops in each of the top five specialty cropproducing counties will be of primary interest. The hope is to provide industry leaders and policy makers with more information about the broader economic importance of specialty crops to local economies. The study was based on collecting secondary data from government sources as well as conducting a survey of 59 specialty crop agribusinesses in Monterey, Fresno, Kern, Tulare and San Diego counties.
