Data Harmonization Report. AtlantOS project ArchiMer
Koop-jakobsen,; Waldmann,; Huber,; Harscoat, Valerie; Pouliquen, Sylvie.
AtlantOS WP7 is dedicated to improve harmonization of data management procedures, and thereby improve the quality, interoperability and discoverability of data resources in AtlantOS. To improve harmonization, AtlantOS WP7 works on multiple levels; a) WP7 has identified selected areas, where significant improvements of interoperability can be obtained. This has resulted in the formulation of a common agreement stating a set of specific minimum standards, which shall ensure cross platform coherence. This includes minimum standards for use of identifiers for platforms and institutions, metadata including vocabularies, quality control and dissemination means. Furthermore, guidelines regarding DOI assignment, catalogue techniques and vocabulary use in AtlantOS...

The oceans play a key role in global issues such as climate change, food security, and human health. Given their vast dimensions and internal complexity, efficient monitoring and predicting of the planet's ocean must be a collaborative effort of both regional and global scale. A first and foremost requirement for such collaborative ocean observing is the need to follow well-defined and reproducible methods across activities: from strategies for structuring observing systems, sensor deployment and usage, and the generation of data and information products, to ethical and governance aspects when executing ocean observing. To meet the urgent, planet-wide challenges we face, methods across all aspects of ocean observing should be broadly adopted by the ocean...

Streamlining Data and Service Centers for Easier Access to Data and Analytical Services: The Strategy of ODATIS as the Gateway to French Marine Data ArchiMer
Schmidt, Sabine; Maudire, Gilbert; Nys, Cecile; Sudre, Joel; Harscoat, Valerie; Dibarboure, Gérald; Huynh, Frédéric.
The past few decades have seen a marked acceleration in the amount of marine observation data derived using both in situ and remote sensing measurements. For example, high-frequency monitoring of key physical-chemical parameters has become an essential tool for assessing natural and human-induced changes in coastal waters as well as their consequences on society. The number and variety of data acquisition techniques require efficient methods of improving data availability. The challenge is to make ocean data available via interoperable portals, which facilitate data sharing according to Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) principles for producers and users. Ocean DAta Information and Services (ODATIS) aims to become a unique gateway to...

Data flow and Data integration - WP7. 5th meeting – Implementation phase, 20th November 2017 at PLOCAN, Gran Canaria ArchiMer
Harscoat, Valerie; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Atlantos Wp7 Partners,.
The objectives of this 5th AtlantOS WP7 meeting were - review progress on the implementation (Task 7.3) of the recommendations and enhancements at Network and Integrator level based on actions decided at the 4th meeting mid-December 2016, - progress on monitoring and traceability services that aims to assess Atlantic Ocean Observation performance and to feedback data providers with statistics for acknowledgement of their contribution to the systems, - follow-up of  the Transatlantic workshop held in June 2017 and the actions identified - present the GEOSS workshop on 24th November 2017, starting point for the integration in GEOSS, - review activities on-going in the further tasks of WP7 that aim (1) to assess the impact of AtlantOS observations in...

Well-founded data management systems are of vital importance for ocean observing systems as they ensure that essential data are not only collected but also retained and made accessible for analysis and application by current and future users. Effective data management requires collaboration across activities including observations, metadata and data assembly, quality assurance and control (QA/QC), and data publication that enables local and interoperable discovery and access and secures archiving that guarantees long-term preservation. To achieve this, data should be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). Here, we outline how these principles apply to ocean data and illustrate them with a few examples. In recent decades, ocean data...

Data Management Handbook Atlantos ArchiMer
Harscoat, Valerie; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Atlantos Wp7 Partners (representatives Of Networks And Integrators),.
The H2020 AtlantOS project aims to optimize and enhance the Integrated Atlantic Ocean Observing System. One goal is to ensure that data from different and diverse in-situ observing Networks are readily accessible and useable to a wider community, including the international ocean science community and other stakeholders in this field. To achieve that, the strategy is to move towards an integrated data system within AtlantOS that harmonizes work flows, data processing and distribution across in-situ observing network systems, and integrates in-situ observations into existing European and international data infrastructures, termed Integrators (e.g. Copernicus INS TAC, SeaDataNet NODCs, EMODnet, EurOBIS, GEOSS). This handbook aims to help the Networks to...

A GIS interface to the French Fisheries Information System of Ifremer ArchiMer
Harscoat, Valerie; Leblond, Emilie; Treguer, Mickael; Berthou, Patrick.
The Fisheries Information System of Ifremer aims to build an operational and multidisciplinary monitoring network for scientific purposes, allowing a comprehensive view of fishery systems including their biological, technical, environmental and economical components. One of its objectives consists in elaborating and providing data and indicators for a widespread public (researchers, fishermen, administration, general public…), including bio-economic diagnostics and assessment of the short and long-term impacts of fisheries management scenario and measures. To further an integrated analysis of the fishery systems, the wide range kinds of data (landings, efforts, biological or environmental observations, economic data…) are managed in a single data...

Towards an integrated EU data system within AtlantOS ArchiMer
Harscoat, Valerie; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Atlantoswp7 Partners,.
The H2020 AtlantOS project started in June 2015 and aims to optimise and enhance the Integrated Atlantic Ocean Observing Systems (IAOOS). One goal is to ensure that data from different and diverse in-situ observing networks are readily accessible and useable to the wider community, international ocean science community and other stakeholders in this field. To achieve that, the strategy is to move towards an integrated data system within AtlantOS that harmonises work flows, data processing and distribution across the in-situ observing network systems, and integrates in-situ observations in existing European and international data infrastructures (Copernicus marine service, SeaDataNet NODCs, EMODnet, OBIS, GEOSS) so called Integrators. The targeted...

AtlantOS Data Services Report ArchiMer
Harscoat, Valerie; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Atlantos Wp7 Partners,.
Within the H2020 AtlantOS project, WP7 has designed and started to set up an integrated data system that harmonizes work flows, data processing and distribution across in-situ observing network systems, and integrates in-situ observations into existing European and international data infrastructures, named Integrators (e.g. Copernicus INS TAC, SeaDataNet NODCs, EMODnet, EurOBIS, GEOSS). The targeted European data system is not a new system but integrates existing data systems. These systems are being enhanced to ingest and deliver more in-situ observation data on Atlantic Ocean and to better serve the users, in a harmonized way across the systems. The scope of data services for the AtlantOS observations is discovery, download, viewing and...
