Morphology of the Eyeball, Orbit and Retina of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) Alevins under Hypoxic Conditions International Journal of Morphology
Pellón,Mario; Rojas,Mariana; Saint-Pierre,Gustavo; Hartley,Ricardo; del Sol,Mariano.
It has been demonstrated that hypoxia retards the growth of fish, reduces the survival of their larvae, deforms their vertebral column, but despite this teleost fish have the ability to completely regenerate many of their tissues, particularly the retina. As we do not have enough information about the effects of hypoxia on the eyeball, orbit and retina of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), we propose the following objectives: 1) Compare the morphological changes of the eyeball of fish subject to hypoxia and normoxia. 2) Determine changes in the orbit structure. 3) Describe the retina of salmon alevins. 4). Recognize hypoxic cells using the anti-Hif1a antibody in the retina of alevins as a sensor. 5) Determine the Shh morphogenic expression in alevins exposed...

Rat Spermatogenesis Damage in Intermittent Hypobaric Hypoxia and the Protective Role of Melatonin: I Cauda Epididymal Spermatozoa International Journal of Morphology
Hartley,Ricardo; Castro-Sánchez,Rodrigo; Ramos-Gonzalez,Benito; Bustos-Obregón,Eduardo.
At present it is not clear if male fertility is affected by intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH). This is an important issue since a large human population works over 3000 masl. This study analyzes epididymal sperm, in adult Sprague Dawley rats after five cycles of IHH (7 days exposure to 4200 masl in a hypobaric chamber / 7 days at 500 masl). The animals were separated into groups of 8, one group was exposed to hypoxia (7 days), and the others to IHH for one to five cycles. Controls (500 masl) were examined at the beginning and at the end of the 70 experimental days. A duplicate set of rats treated with melatonin (supposedly protecting from hypoxia) was also examined, as were their controls, injected with 0,03% ethanol (melatonin solvent). Epididymal...

Immunolocalization of Morphogen Sonic Hedgehog in Salmon Fry (Salmo salar) International Journal of Morphology
Rojas,Mariana; Saint-Pierre,Gustavo; Hartley,Ricardo; Vásquez,Bélgica; Conei,Daniel; del Sol,Mariano.
With the purpose of carrying out a diagnosis of the different pathologies that affect the salmon fry stage (Salmo salar) and analyze the regeneration phases of the organizational centers and subjacent tissue in case of an amputation, we realized a study that allowed identifying the temporary and spatial location of the Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) morphogen in hatched fry stage. Fifteen salmon fry (Salmo salar) were used. They were anesthetized with 5 % benzocaine (BZ-20®, Veterquímica), fixed in 10 % buffered formalin, and embedded in paraffin, Shh polyclonal antibody (Santa Cruz H-160, rabbit) was used diluted at 1/100. They were subsequently rinsed in PBS-1 % Triton and incubated with anti-rabbit conjugated polymer antibody and HRP for 10-15 min. The...

Effects of hypoxia on epididymal sperm parameters and protective role of ibuprofen and melatonin Biol. Res.
Vargas,Álvaro; Bustos-Obregón,Eduardo; Hartley,Ricardo.
Hypobaric hypoxia is of interest due to an increase of human populations working at high altitude. Testicular damage is related to the physiological response (neoangiogenesis) to increased intrascrotal blood flow as temperature rises. Hypoxia is a stress factor with overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The effect of hypoxia in mice reproductive parameters is analyzed. Animals were exposed to simulated hypoxia of 4,200 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.) in a chamber for 33.2 days, both to continuous (HH) or intermittent hypoxia (HI) with an intermittency period of 4 days hypoxia /4 days normoxia (500 m.a.s.l.). The anti-inflammatory drug Ibuprofen was administered to a group of mice to control vasodilation and increased blood flow. Melatonin was...
