Community structures and substrate utilization of bacteria in soils from organic and conventional farming systems of the DOK long-term field experiment Organic Eprints
Widmer, Franco; Rasche, Frank; Hartmann, Martin; Fliessbach, Andreas.
Preservation or improvement of soil quality and productivity is of major importance for sustainable agriculture. Microorganisms strongly influence these soil characteristics as they are involved in nutrient cycling, transformation processes and soil aggregate formation, as well as in plant pathology or plant growth promotion. A profound understanding of structure, dynamics and functions of soil microbial populations represents one key to the understanding and description of soil quality. Therefore, we analyzed longterm effects of three farmyard manure (FYM)-based farming systems, i.e. bio-dynamic (BIODYN), bio-organic (BIOORG) and conventional (CONFYM), on microbiological soil characteristics and compared them to long-term effects of minerally fertilized...

Welche landwirtschaftlichen Anbausysteme fördern das Bodenleben? Organic Eprints
Fliessbach, Andreas; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen; Oehl, Fritz; Pfiffner, Lukas; Hartmann, Martin; Widmer, Franco.

Biochar affects community composition of nitrous oxide reducers in a field experiment Organic Eprints
Krause, Hans-Martin; Hüppi, Roman; Leifeld, Jens; El-Hadidi, Mohamed; Harter, Johannes; Kappler, Andreas; Hartmann, Martin; Behrens, Sebastian; Mäder, Paul; Gattinger, Andreas.
N2O is a major greenhouse gas and the majority of anthropogenic N2O emissions originate from agriculturally managed soils. Therefore, developing N2O mitigation strategies is a key challenge for the agricultural sector and biochar soil treatment is one reported option. Biochar's capacity to increase soil pH and to foster activity of specialized N2O reducers has been proposed as possible mechanisms for N2O mitigation. An experiment was undertaken to investigate whether changes in the community composition of N2O reducers was observed under field conditions after biochar application. The study objective was to assess the abundance and taxonomic composition of the functional marker genes nosZ and nosZ –II across a vegetation period of Zea mays L. after biochar...

Ranking the magnitude of crop and farming system effects on soil microbial biomass and genetic structure of bacterial communities Organic Eprints
Hartmann, Martin; Fliessbach, Andreas; Oberholzer, Hans-Rudolf; Widmer, Franco.
Biological soil characteristics such as microbial biomass, community structures, activities, and functions may provide important information on environmental and anthropogenic influences on agricultural soils. Diagnostic tools and detailed statistical approaches need to be developed for a reliable evaluation of these parameters, in order to allow classification and quantification of the magnitude of such effects. The DOK long-term agricultural field experiment was initiated in 1978 in Switzerland for the evaluation of organic and conventional farming practices. It includes three representative Swiss farming systems with biodynamic, bio-organic and conventional fertilization and plant protection schemes along with minerally fertilized and unfertilized...
