Gezielte Umstellungsförderung in Wasserschutzgebieten Organic Eprints

Evaluating Research beyond Scientific Impact - How to Include Criteria for Productive Interactions and Impact on Practice and Society Organic Eprints
Wolf, Birge; Lindenthal, Thomas; Szerencsits, Manfred; Holbrook, J. Britt; Heß, Jürgen.
Currently, established research evaluation focuses on scientific impact – that is, the impact of research on science itself. We discuss extending research evaluation to cover productive interactions and the impact of research on practice and society. The results are based on interviews with scientists from (organic) agriculture and a review of the literature on broader/social/societal impact assessment and the evaluation of interdisciplinary and ransdisciplinary research. There is broad agreement about what activities and impacts of research are relevant for such an evaluation. However, the extension of research evaluation is hampered by a lack of easily usable data. To reduce the effort involved in data collection, the usability of existing documentation...

R.; Bruns, Christian.
The soil borne pathogen Rhizoctonia solani is of increasing importance since organic seed potatoes are compulsory in organic potato production. No convincing measure to control the disease is available for organic production. The effect of a suppressive compost mixture of organic household and yard waste to control R. solani in potatoes was tested in an organic field trial at the University Kassel in 2006. The compost was directly applied at the seed tuber area. Seed tubers (variety Nicola) naturally infested with black scurf were planted in three infection classes (no, middle and high infection). Compost amendment had a strong impact on symptoms of R. solani on tubers. The reduction of both the infestation of harvested potatoes with black scurf and the...

Entwicklung eines stickstoffbasierten Ertragsprognosemodells zur Optimierung des Ökologischen Kartoffelbaus Organic Eprints
Bruns, Christian; Schulz, Hannes; Haase, Thorsten; Finckh, Maria R.; Heß, Jürgen.
Potatoes are one of the most important crops in organic farming with respect to farmers’ income. Yields are often strongly influenced by regional and yearly diffe-rences. Despite the availability of detailed knowledge, it is only now that a crop growth model has been generated which allows for the estimation and prediction of potato yield under organic conditions. The aim of our study was to produce a highly elaborate prediction model based on the utilization and speed of nitrogen uptake as they relate to the yield dynamics of tubers and canopy in combination with late blight dynamics. Therefore, from 2005 to 2014, these parameters were assessed in up to 18 varieties of potatoes comprised of differing maturity groups. The data were ana-lyzed in R using...

The field experiment compared two means of soil tillage and examined the response of grain yield of cultivated cereals and population density of Canada thistle. Results suggest that in fields with a marked proliferation soil tillage cannot be expected to considerably reduce Canada thistle. Besides, the data from the first two seasons indicate a significantly lower or comparable grain yield of cereals after reduced tillage.

Erzeugung von Verarbeitungskartoffeln im Ökologischen Landbau: Effekt von Standort und Sorte auf Ertragsstruktur und die Qualität von Pommes frites Organic Eprints
Krause, Tanja; Haase, Thorsten; Böhm, Herwart; Heß, Jürgen; Loges, Ralf; Haase, Norbert U..
First experiments in the years 2000 and 2001 have shown a high effect of the factor “site” on the suitability for processing of different potato varieties in organic farming. Constitutive on these preview tests an assortment of 8 different potato varieties for processing to Potato chips were set up on three locations with different soil qualities in the years 2003 and 2004. First results of the year 2003 confirm the influence of the site on the quality of potatoes for processing. Interesting for organic farmers are the varieties Agria and Marena with high yield on all three sites and good quality of the product after harvesting and storage.

As conservation agriculture and organic farming are currently considered as environmentally friendly options for producing food, this study explores the motivations and problems of organic European farmers that apply at least two of the following techniques: (i) no-tillage, (ii) reduced tillage and/or (iii) green manures conservation practices. We carried out a survey about motivations and problems of 159 farmers located in 10 European countries with a questionnaire with closed-ended questions. Data were analysis with a principal component analysis followed by clustering to identify groups of farmers that share the same type of motivations and problems. The most important motivations are related to soil preservation concerns and problems are mainly linked...

Influence of Reduced Tillage and Green Manures on Weed Emergence and Yield in Organic Farming (TILMAN-ORG SESSION) Organic Eprints
Grosse, Meike; Haase, Thorsten; Heß, Jürgen.
If farmers want to use reduced tillage in organic agriculture, they often face great challenges in weed control. One goal of the European research project TILMAN ORG (www.tilman-org.net) was to develop a more efficient weed management and increased biodiversity through improved use of green manures in different systems of reduced tillage. In a repeated one year trial on the research farm of University of Kassel the effects of different green manure species and different tillage systems on weed cover, density and biomass as well as yield of a subsequent main crop were examined. Sinapis alba, Trifolium resupinatum and Vicia sativa were tested as green manure species. Bare fallow served as control. After the green manures the main crop oat was sown in four...

Influence of variety and site on yield structure and quality of potatoes for processing to chips in organic farming Organic Eprints
Krause, Tanja; Haase, Thorsten; Böhm, Herwart; Heß, Jürgen; Loges, Ralf; Haase, Norbert U..
Specific conditions of organic farming are often limited nitrogen supply and – depending on the year - early occurrence of P. infestans. In addition, genetic (variety) and environmental (site, year) factors may have strong effects on both the yield and quality of tubers with regard to their suitability for processing. This study examined the impact of variety and site on the yield structure and quality of tubers for processing to chips at three sites over two years. According to the results, the varieties Agria and Marena with high yield and good quality after harvesting and storage were interesting for organic farmers.

Effect of ploughing depth and mechanical soil loading on soil physical properties, weed infestation, yield performance and grain quality in sole and intercrops of pea and oat in organic farming Organic Eprints
Gronle, Annkathrin; Lux, Guido; Böhm, Herwart; Schmidtke, Knut; Wild, Melanie; Demmel, Markus; Brandhuber, Robert; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Heß, Jürgen.
The effect of ploughing depth and mechanical soil loading on the performance of pea sole crops, oat sole crops and pea–oat intercrops was investigated in field experiments under organic farming conditions at two sites in Germany in 2009 and 2010. The two ploughing depths were short-term shallow ploughing to a soil depth of 7–10 cm and deep ploughing to 25–30 cm. Wheel loads of 26 and 45 kN, which correspond to typical rear wheel loads of field machinery used during sowing operations, were compared to an uncompacted control. Shallow ploughing resulted in a greater penetration resistance in the 14–28 cm soil layer compared to deep ploughing. An increase in mechanical soil loading intensity increased the bulk density and decreased the air capacity in the...

Mangelnde Kenntnis über den Anbau von Körnerleguminosen bei Luxemburger Landwirten Organic Eprints
Zimmer, S.; Liebe, Ulf; Didier, Jean-Paul; Heß, Jürgen.
Grain legume production in Europe has decreased in recent years, while legume demand has rapidly increased. Various investigations have identified problems and benefits of grain legume cultivation. Studies investigating why farmers do not cultivate these crops are missing. Here we surveyed farmers about grain legume cultivation. We sent a questionnaire to 1373 farmers in Luxembourg, with a response rate of 29%. Results show that 12% of the conventional and 85% of the organic farmers cultivated grain legumes. We observed that farmers feel badly informed about grain legume cultivation. The main barriers to not cultivate these crops are not economic issues but a lack of knowledge about grain legumes. Even though grain legume producers mentioned several...

Effect of Different Defoliation Systems of Ryegrass–Clover on Yield and Selected Quality Parameters of Organic Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) for Industrial Processing at Harvest and After Storage Organic Eprints
Dresow, Jana; Krause, Tanja; Haase, Norbert U.; Loges, Ralf; Heß, Jürgen; Böhm, Herwart.
The nitrogen supply plays an important role in achieving quality characteristics in organic potato farming. Different defoliation systems of ryegrass–clover may influence the amount of fixed nitrogen available to the tubers. In a field experiment, the effect of different defoliation systems (cutting, mulching and a combination of them) of the pre-crop ryegrass–clover on selected quality attributes of organically grown potatoes, destined for processing into French fries (cv. Agria) or crisps (cv. Marlen), were conducted in two consecutive years (2003 and 2004). Parameters studied included compounds related to the sensory properties of potato food (tuber dry matter, starch, reducing sugars) as well as nutritional quality (nitrogen, minerals). Selected...
