Use of tanniferous plants against gastro-intestinal nematodes in ruminants Organic Eprints

On organic farms, infections of gastro-intestinal nematodes (GIN) in grazing cattle, sheep and goats can have a detrimental impact on animal health, and are therefore of substantial economic importance. The aim of our interdisciplinary project is to investigate the basic conditions for the implementation of a control strategy against GIN based on the use of tanniferous plants. The project combines research on plant growth and management, animal nutrition and parasitology. The first results, especially those from Onobrychis viciifolia (sainfoin), presented here are encouraging. Integrated control of gastrointestinal nematodes in lambs using a bioactive feed x breed approach Organic Eprints

Forages rich in condensed tannins have repeatedly shown potential to reduce gastrointestinal nematode infection in sheep. Similarly, several breeds of sheep have shown a relative resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). We hypothesised that additive or even synergic effects may arise from the combination of a relatively resistant breed and a diet rich in condensed tannins. In study I, 160 lambs of the native Red Engadine Sheep (RES) and 113 lambs of the Swiss White Alpine sheep (SWA) were artificially infected with GIN and subsequently grazed for 52 days. Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) substantially impact on goat health. Because of the widespread development of GIN, resistant to allopathic drugs, further research into alternative parasite control methods is required [1]. Silver fir, Abies alba MILL (SF), is traditionally used by Swiss farmers in order to control GIN infections of goats but also to improve animal welfare. A survey among goat farmers revealed that goat farmers use SF in winter during a period of approximately five months. The SF-ration per animal and day differ between approximately 8.2 g dry matter (DM) to 600 g DM [2]. The aim of this experiment conducted at four sites in Switzerland was to investigate the transmission and infectivity of the two main helminth parasite species of poultry (Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum) in outdoor runs with two different stocking rates. Additionally, the influence of a simplemanagement practice (mowing of run) on helminth transmission was studied. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of two different short-term progestagen treatments for estrus synchronization in cyclic ewes. A total of 292 ewes of 3 flocks (A–C) on different farms were treated for 6 days with Eazi-breedTM CIDR® G (n = 145) or Chronogest® CR (n = 147) vaginal inserts in combination with 0.125 mg Cloprostenol and 300IU eCG at device removal. Blood samples were taken for progesterone (P4) determination at insert application and removal as well as 14 days later. Anthelmintic effect and intake dynamics of oak (quercus spp.) and walnut (juglans regia) foliage in goats Organic Eprints

Oak and Walnut are both of ethnoveterinary importance, especially for anthelmintic treatment of ruminants [1,2]. H2O and EtOH-water (1:1) extracts of oak and walnut foliage were used for phytochemical profiling and for in vitro assays with Caenorhabditis elegans and gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). Oak extracts contained mainly tannins, walnut extracts were dominated by flavonoids. Oak EtOH extract caused significant lethal effects in adult C. elegans (LC50 1.5 mg/mL); motility of GIN L3 larvae was reduced by the EtOH extract but at substantially higher concentrations.
