In humid regions and organic production of potatoes, late blight poses a special challenge for farmers. The only effective treatment against it is copper, which is strictly regulated by EU and national organic regulation bodies. “Bio-Austria” as an Austrian one, allows for example only 2 kg copper ha-1 year-1. The Institute for Organic Farming at AREC Raumberg-Gumpenstein carried out two field trials in 2010 and 2012 with two alternative treatments in comparison to copper: Myco-Sin and an extract of field horsetail (Equisetum arvense). The field trials confirmed the use of copper as best protection of the leaves against late blight with the highest tuber yield, showing a significant difference to all other treatments. |

Energy crops for biogas production need to be integrated into sustainable and site adapted crop rotation systems, minimising the competition with food production. Luzerne/clover (-grass), sun flower, maize, green-rye + maize and vetch-rye + maize were compared at two sites in Austria with semi-arid (Raasdorf) and humid (Lambach) conditions with and without biogas slurry application. The yield of legumes and fertilised non-legumes at the humid site were 9 % to 56 % higher then at the semi-arid site. The 2-crop system maize following vetch-rye achieved the highest yields at both sites. Slurry from the biogas plant increased the yield only at the humid site. |
