Aspects of the life-cycle of <i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (Nematoda; Monhysteridae) OMA
Vranken, G.; Thielemans, L.K.; Heip, C.H.R.; Vandycke, M..
<i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (De Coninck,1943) was collected from the sediment of the Sluice-dock, a euhaline-polyhaline lagoon near the harbour of Ostend (Belgium). The species was cultivated in large numbers on a bacto-agar medium with bacterial growth. Embryonic growth was studied at 30 °C and 30 promille S. Maximum embryonic length-growth occurs at the vermiform stage. Post-embryonic length-growth, studied at 25 °C and 30 promille S, is a linear function of time and may be expressed as l = 160.46 + 29.55(t-to), where to = time at the beginning of development; t and l = time (d) and length (µm). At 25 °C and 30 promille S, average embryonic development time and generation time are 4 and 9 d...

Diversity of nematode assemblages along a Mediterranean deep-sea transect OMA
Soetaert, K.; Heip, C.H.R.; Vincx, M..
The diversity of the nematode assemblages along a Mediterranean transect off Calvi, Corsica, Mediterranean Sea (depth range 160 to 1220 m) was very high. There was no clear trend in species diversity with station depth, and diversity at the station located on the continental shelf was not markedly lower than that at the deep-sea stations. However, diversity decreased with increasing depth into the sediment. As with the macrofauna, nematode assemblages in the Mediterranean is explained by a slight dominance of some species, while no species are dominant in the Bay of Biscay. Generic (between-genus) diversity was much higher than the average species diversity within genera, indicating that the high overall species diversity was not caused by large numbers of...

Benthic communities in the Southern Bight of the North Sea and their use in ecological monitoring OMA
Govaere, J.C.R.; Van Damme, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; De Coninck, L.A.P..
Macrobenthic and meiobenthic communities of an area off the Belgian coast of the North Sea were studied from 1970 until 1975 at 74 stations. On the basis of both macro- and meiobenthos, three zones can be distinguished in the area. The coastal zone is characterized by the macrobenthic <i>Abra alba</i> community, corresponding to the meiobenthic <i>Microarthridion littorale</i>-<i>Halectinosoma herdmani</i> community, and the open sea zone by the macrobenthic <i>Venus gallina</i> community and the meiobenthic <i>Leptastacus laticaudatus-Paramesochra helgolandica</i> community. In between is a transient zone where elements of both other zones mix. The distribution of these zones is governed by the...

Benthos of a sublittoral sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea: general considerations OMA
Willems, K.A.; Vanosmael, C.; Claeys, D.; Vincx, M.; Heip, C.H.R..
The benthic fauna of the Kwinte Bank, a linear sandbank in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea, was sampled on ten stations in September 1978. This sandbank shows a linear gradient from fine sandy sediments in the south to coarser sandy sediments in the north as a result of the tidal current pattern in the region. The influence of this gradient on macro- and meiofauna was studied. Diversity of polychaetes and harpacticoid copepods is correlated with median grain size of the sand fraction, diversity of nematodes is not. The influence of station location and sediment characteristics on density of all major macrobenthic groups is very outspoken, and linear density trends are common. This is not true for meiofauna in general and nematodes and copepods...

A note on the life-span of r-strategists OMA
Heip, C.H.R..
The idea is presented that the short life-span of <i>r</i>-strategists may in some cases be an adaptation to avoid predation. Evidence supporting this hypothesis is presented by examination of predation of the polyp <i>Protohydra leuckarti</i> on harpacticoid copepods.

The metazoan meiobenthos along the continental slope of the Goban Spur (NE Atlantic) OMA
Vanaverbeke, J.; Soetaert, K.; Heip, C.H.R.; Vanreusel, A..
The metazoan meiobenthos along the continental slope of the Goban Spur (NE Atlantic) was studied in the framework of the OMEX-programme (EC-MAST II). Meiobenthic densities, the vertical distribution of the meiobenthos in the sediment, and the biomass and generic composition of the dominant group, the nematodes, were investigated at different water depths. The meiobenthic communities along the depth gradient of the continental slope followed the usual trends: the communities were dominated by nematodes, and meiobenthic densities, total nematode biomass, and mean individual nematode weight decreased with increasing water depth. The shelf station had significantly higher densities, nematode biomass and mean individual weight than the deeper stations. The...

The toxicity of mercury on the free-living marine nematode <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> Bastian, 1865 OMA
Vranken, G.; Vanderhaeghen, R.; Van Brussel, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; Hermans, D..
The influence of the mercury compounds Hg2Cl2, HgCl2, and CH3HgCl as measured by egg mortality, preadult mortality, and development time, was studied on the marine nematode <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i>. A significant influence on egg, juvenile, and preadult mortality was observed for Hg2Cl2 and HgCl2, while CH3HgCl did not cause egg mortality. It was concluded that the juvenile mortality is the most sensitive index for the chronic stress. No apparent changes in the development time occurred. The acute toxicity of the above mentioned mercury compounds, measured as...

Nematode distribution in ocean margin sediments of the Goban Spur (northeast Atlantic) in relation to sediment geochemistry OMA
Soetaert, K.; Vanaverbeke, J.; Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, P.M.J.; Middelburg, J.J.; Sandee, A.; Duineveld, G.C.A..
Nematode density along a depth gradient (206-2760 m) in the northeastern Atlantic (Goban Spur) is linearly and positively related to organic matter mineralization in the sediment. It is estimated that nematodes contribute at most 13% to total carbon turnover, and this contribution decreases with water depth. The vertical distribution of nematodes in the sediment closely follows concentration <i>vs</i> depth profiles of total nitrogen in the sediment. Both nematodes and total nitrogen tend to be more concentrated towards the surface with increasing water depth. There is no indication that nematode vertical distribution is directly influenced by the oxygen penetration in the sediment. However, it is hypothesized that the sediment oxygen...

Research on the development of a standardized ecotoxicological test on marine nematodes: 1. Culturing conditions and criteria for two monhysterids, <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> and <i>Monhystera microphthalma</i> OMA
Vranken, G.; Van Brussel, D.; Vanderhaeghen, R.; Heip, C.H.R..
The brackish-water nematodes <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> and <i>Monhystera microphtalma</i> were chosen as test organisms for ecotoxicological studies. Both species are locally abundant, have short life cycles and can be maintained for several generations under laboratory conditions. They reproduce very well on a sloppy bacto-agar (0.5-0.8%) made up with water of the natural habitat, enriched with 1% Vlasblom medium (Vlasblom, pers. commun.) and 1% silicium (15g.l-1), reaching densities of approximately 1000 individuals.cm-2. Starting from such agnotobiotic cultures, a chemically defined artificial medium has been developed. This medium consists of 0.5% bacto-agar in artificial seawater,...

Harpacticoid copepod community structure in two North Sea estuaries in relation to pollution OMA
Van Damme, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, R.; Vaeremans, M..
The harpacticoid copepod assemblages of two estuaries in the Netherlands, the Westerschelde and the Eems-Dollard, are compared. Both estuaries have similar physical characteristics but the Westerschelde is much more polluted than the Eems-Dollard. Harpacticoid copepod assemblages in both estuaries are similar in terms of species composition. However, there is a striking difference in quantitative characteristics : the highest annual averages of density, biomass and diversity in the Westerschelde are below the lowest annual averages in the Eems-Dollard estuary. Because both estuaries are extensively monitored, data concerning many possible causes of this difference could be compared. It is argued that it is the high load of heavy metals in the Westerschelde...

A rapid method of extracting meiobenthic nematodes and copepods from mud and detritus OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Smol, N.; Hautekiet, W..
The extraction of nematodes and harpacticoid copepods from muddy sediments or sediments containing a large amount of organic detritus can be achieved through a series of centrifugations of the material in a sacharose solution of at least 900 g/l. The number of individuals appearing in the supernatant after each centrifugation forms a geometric series, with a ratio which is dependent on the amount of material, the concentration of the saccharose solution, and the acceleration of the centrifuge. Knowledge of this ratio allows an estimation of density after only one centrifugation. More than 90 % of the animals present in the sample can be extracted after only two centrifugations.

Round Table discussions OMA
Coomans, A.; De Coninck, L.A.P.; Heip, C.H.R..
The round table discussions at the end of the meeting were summarized from tape recordings that were not always clear and voices could not always be identified. Therefore we decided to give the main ideas that were expressed and were proposed or accepted by all or a majority of the participants, without reference to any person. We hope that this summary is a true reflection of what was said with many more words.

Toxicity of copper, mercury and lead to a marine nematode OMA
Vranken, G.; Heip, C.H.R..
Toxicity of copper, lead and mercury to the nematode <i>Diplolaimella</i> spec 1 is studied. Mortality responses obtained demonstrate high resistance to heavy metals. Population growth parameters as the intrinsic rate of natural increase and net-reproductivity are significantly depressed at copper-concentrations which cause no juvenile mortality. The lowest concentrations tested caused significant inhibition of development rate in both sexes. For this particular nematode species suppression of fecundity and developmental inhibition are more reliable criteria, determining non-exceedable limits with regard to environmental safety. Our tests show that nematode productivity may be significantly depressed at copper levels found in some areas of the...

Meiobenthos of a sublittoral sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Willems, K.A.; Vincx, M.; Claeys, D.; Vanosmael, C.; Heip, C.H.R..
The meiofauna of a subtidal linear sandbank, the Kwinte Bank, in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea was analysed, with particular reference to the nematodes and harpacticoids. Nematodes are evenly spread over the whole sandbank but species differ. Diversity is very high (on average 3.8 bit /ind.) and 136 species were identified. Density on the contrary is low (on average 384 ind./10 cm²). Three species groups can be distinguished which are correlated with sediment characteristics. All trophic groups of nematodes are equally distributed within the sediment. Copepods are both more numerous and more diverse in the coarser sediments of the northern side of the sandbank. One cyclopoid and 65 harpacticoid species were identified with an average...

On the importance of <i>Protohydra leuckarti</i> as a predator of meiobenthic populations OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Smol, N..
The predator-prey system between the polyp <i>Protohydra leuckarti</i> and the harpacticoid copepod <i>Tachidius discipes</i> is investigated using the results of a 3 year field survey and laboratory experiments involving the cultivation of the species. In the field a close relationship between numbers of predator and prey was observed. The possible influence of environmental factors on this relationship is discussed. A number of mathematical models is compared to investigate the possibility of realistic description of the system. It is concluded that, even during relatively long time intervals, the number of prey can be predicted from the reproductive potential of the prey on the one hand and the rate of predation and predator...

Vertical distribution of meiofauna and the efficiency of the Van Veen grab on sandy bottoms in lake Grevelingen (the Netherlands) OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Willems, K.A.; Goossens, A..
Comparison of density estimates of Nematoda and Harpacticoida obtained by a Van Veen grab and SCUBA diving from a sandy sediment in shallow water shows that Harpacticoida are sampled efficiently with the grab but Nematoda are not. For the Nematoda, total density is underestimated and the relative abundance of surface-dwellers is overestimated. Samples obtained with a Van Veen grab from which the material is collected in a bucket and subsampled afterwards have a much smaller statistical variability than samples obtained with other methods.
