Raemakers, I.P.; Helsdingen, P.J. van.
Eoferreola rhombica, a pompilid new to the Dutch fauna, and its remarkable host, Eresus sandaliatus (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae; Araneae: Eresidae) In 1998 a female specimen of Eoferreola rhombica (Christ, 1791) was collected in a road-verge on the Veluwe. The nearest populations of this species are found in northern France and eastern Germany. It is possible that this insect was transported by traffic from one of these populations. However at the collection site a large population of the rare host spider Eresus sandaliatus (Martini & Goeze, 1778) is known to be present for many years. Therefore the presence of a population of E. rhombica cannot be excluded. Future observations have to reveal the status of this spider wasp in the Netherlands.

A recapitulation of the Nearctic species of Centromerus Dahl (Araneida, Linyphiidae) with remarks on Tunagyna Debilis (Banks) Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
In any new region the knowledge of the spider fauna, or of any other group of organisms, has to go through three successive stages. In the beginning there is a period of descriptive activity with many new species recorded and named, in the past usually by several authors independently. In the Nearotic Region this stage may have ended for New England, but this is hardly true for the Far West and the southeastern part. In particular the names of Emerton, McCook, Keyserling, Banks, Petrunkevitch, Crosby, Bishop, Chamberlin, and Ivie, not to mention many others, are forever associated with this period. By building up large collections and giving their finds to the world they have laid the foundations of New World Arachnology. The second stage I would call the...

The affinities of Wubana and Allomengea with some notes on the latter genus (Araneae, Linyphiidae) Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
INTRODUCTION Allomengea, formerly known as Mengea, is a well-known genus in northwestern Europe. It is a small genus with only four species, which, though locally abundant, are not at all common. The males are easily recognized by the palp, which is adorned with a bunch of modified spines standing on the tip of a horn-like projection of the cymbium. Because of the long, thin embolus, which corresponds with coiled membraneous tubes in the female vulva, the genus is placed in the tribus Linyphiini 1). The genus appeared to be Holarctic, since Holm (1960) transferred the North American Microneta pinnata Emerton to Allomengea and at the same time published the first records from the extreme northwestern part of the Nearctic Region (Alaska) of Allomengea...

The spider fauna of Scragh Bog in Co Westmeath, Ireland (Arachnida: Araneae) Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
The spider fauna of Scragh Bog, a quacking bog in Co Westmeath, Ireland, was investigated for the first time. The presence of 53 species could be established, two of which are new to Ireland (Carorita limnaea (Crosby & Bishop), Porrhomma oblitum (O.P.-Cambridge)), while 30 represent new county records [Philodromus aureolus (Clerck), Tibellus maritimus (Meigen), Misumena vatia (Clerck), Oxyptila trux (Blackwall), Neon reticulatus (Blackwall), Sitticus caricis (Westring), Pirata hygrophilus Thorell, Pirata piscatorius (Clerck), Antistea elegans (Blackwall), Ero cambridgei Kulczynski, Theridion instabile O.P.Cambridge, Metellina mengei (Blackwall), Aphileta misera (O.P.-Cambridge), Araeoncus crassiceps (Westring), Bathyphantes approximatus...

Sexual behaviour of Lepthyphantes leprosus (Ohlert) (Araneida, Linyphiidae), with notes on the function of the genital organs Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
INTRODUCTION The Linyphiidae are builders of horizontal webs, on the underside of which the animals live. In most species the reproductive period is limited to a few weeks ; after that time males are rarely met with. As in consequence all observations should be made in the course of a few weeks the species of this family are not very suited for the purpose of a lengthened and thorough investigation into the sexual behaviour. Tretzel (1954), however, observed the perennial occurrence of adult specimens of Lepthyphantes leprosus (Ohlert). Locket & Millidge (1953) and Wiehle (1956) likewise mentioned this phenomenon. The species moreover was known to occur in large quantities in the southern part of the Netherlands, viz., in the artificial marl-caves of...

In totaal...

Catalogus van de Nederlandse spinnen (Araneae) Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
Catalogue of the Dutch spiders (Araneae) This new catalogue is a revised edition of the catalogue of the spiders of the Netherlands of 1980. Newly published faunistic records have been added. A total of 640 species names pass in review, 20 of which (in brackets) concern former records now removed, while 10 are questionable but unverifiable (indicated with ?). Twelve species clearly introduced and not represented by viable populations outside the special anthropogenic environments, such as greenhouses, are included in the catalogue [in square brackets]. Since 1980, 77 species have been added to the Dutch faunal spider checklist. The Netherlands house the type-localities of six nominal species, now representing three recognized species (Liocranum rutilans...

Comparative notes on the holarctic genus Stemonyphantes Menge (Araneida, Linyphiidae) Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
INTRODUCTION The very small genus Stemonyphantes up to our present knowledge is restricted to the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and North America. It was created by Menge (1866) for the European species Aranea trilineata Linnaeus, 1767, which, among others, appeared to be a junior synonym of Aranea lineata Linnaeus, 1758. The species was recorded also from North America (Emerton, 1876, 1882; Keyserling, 1886; and others). For nearly seventy years the nearctic population was thought to be conspecific with the palaearctic population. Keyserling (1886) even supposed the species to have been imported by ship from Europe and to have spread from there. A detailed description of S. lineatus, furnished with excellent figures of the genitalia of the species,...

Remarks on Calliphora nigribarbis Snellen van Vollenhoven Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
During recent curatorial activities in our Calliphorid collection I came across the type-series of Calliphora nigribarbis Snellen van Vollenhoven, 1863. The series consists of four specimens, which had been labelled as syntypes by me at an earlier occasion. They belong unmistakably to one lot, although only two bear identical, original, printed labels reading "V. Siebold/Japan". All four have a second handwritten label with the scientific name, "Calliphora nigribarbis v. Voll.", and a last printed line "Coll. F. M. v. d. Wulp". These latter labels were also put on by me, in 1965, when rearranging the Diptera collection of our museum and are nothing more than an indication that the specimens concerned came from one of the old cabinets originating from, at...

Merodon batumicus, a syrphid fly new to the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Syrphidae) A female specimen of Merodon batumicus Paramonov, 1927 was collected in 1972 in the forested park around Huys te Warmont, to the north of Leiden (province of Zuid- Holland). The region is known for its bulb cultivating companies and fields. This is the first record for the Netherlands. Most likely the specimen was introduced with bulb material from Turkey. The species has been collected rarely within its range which comprises the Caucasus and Turkey.

A reclassification of the species of Linyphia Latreille based on the functioning of the genitalia (Araneida, Linyphiidae) Part II. Microlinyphia Gerhardt and Frontinellina van Helsdingen Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
INTRODUCTION In this second part of my series of papers on the genus Linyphia sensu Bonnet (1957) two genera are dealt with which have been removed from Linyphia Latreille on morphological and ethological grounds. The functioning of the genitalia of one example of either genus have been described and discussed in the first part (Van Helsdingen, 1969). Though the results were not as striking as in the case of Neriene versus Linyphia, the study of the functional aspects of the genitalia have added much to the understanding of the correlations between the shapes of the different parts of the male and female secondary sexual organs. Neriene was separated from Linyphia largely on the basis of the differences in the functioning of the genitalia, as revealed in...

An account of money Spiders from down under (Araneida, Linyphiidae) Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
The Australian and New Zealand regions so far were left out of consideration when studying the Linyphiidae (Linyphiinae) on a world-wide basis. When revising the genus Linyphia it appeared that a fair number of species had been described from these regions; but it also became very clear, by a superficial investigation, that these species were so completely different from our European concept of Linyphia and related genera, that they were best put aside then with a view to paying more attention to that part of the world at a later time. A small collection of Linyphiidae from Australian caves, recently received from Mrs. Barbara York Main, Nedlands, Western Australia, offered an excellent opportunity to become better acquainted with the interesting fauna of...

Revision of the Micryphantidae and Linyphiidae (Araneida) of the van Hasselt collection Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
In the present paper a revision is given of the Dutch material of two families of spiders in the van Hasselt Collection, viz., the Micryphantidae and the Linyphiidae. The greater part of the specimens have been collected by van Hasselt himself or by his family. Other well-known collectors, as Everts, ter Haar and Leesberg, also used to send him material. It is of further interest that van Hasselt has been in regular contact with Blackwall, Thorell, and Simon, important contemporary araneologists. Van Hasselt started to publish the results of his intensive collecting in the Tijdschrift voor Entomologie, as reports of his excursions; later, in 1885 and 1886, he composed a Catalogue of spiders collected in the Netherlands, which can be found in the same...
