Within the framework of the first phase of the Belgian Antarctic Research Programme (1986-1988), the Renard Centre of Marine Geology (RCMG) at the State University of Ghent has participated in two cruises organized by the Alfred-Wegener-lnstitut fur Polar- und Meeresforschung (Bremerhaven). Both cruises addressed different marine geological domains: the passive margin of the eastern Weddell Sea (cruise Antarktis V/ 4) and the active western margin of the Antarctic Peninsula (cruise Antarktis VI/2). In the Weddell Sea some 2650 km of high-resolution reflection seismic profiles have been shot, partly in connection with the drilling operations of ODP Leg 113 off Cape Norvegia. This site has been used as a stratotype for an integrated seismic-stratigraphic... |

Argillaceous petroleum source-rocks often show evidence of fracturing, which is considered to be an important factor for the primary migration of hydrocarbons. Several authors consider overpressuring of the enclosed pore fluids at great burial depths as a major factor for the generation of microfractures, through the mechanism of hydrofracturing. Various scales of fracture networks have been observed in Palaeogene clays which have never reached burial depths, greater than a few hundreds of meters. High-resolution seismic reflection investigations carried out in the southern North Sea have revealed large-scale fracturing patterns, confined to the London/Ieper clays. Equivalent deformation and microfracturing have been observed at outcrops on land.Field... |

Continuous seismic profiling using boomer, sparker or pinger sources has gained widespread use in marine site investigations. At a reconnaissance stage, a grid of continuous seismic traverses with adequate orientation and mesh size is able to yield a coherent picture of the structural conditions of subsurface, allowing the definition of areas of main prospective interest. In the early stages of detailed site investigations, seismic profiling forms an efficient tool for the planning of high-cost offshore drilling and penetration testing programs. Keys to success in seismic data acquisition are a matter of careful balancing and matching of source/receiver parameters with the marine and geological environment and with the geotechnical penetration/resolution... |

The paper analyses the first results obtained in the framework of the RESECUSED project (MAST) whose objectives are the detailed analysis of the behaviour of sediments and bedforms of and on the Middelkerke Bank (Belgian Continental Shelf) and the study of the interaction between water movement, sediment transport and bedform mobility. The results include a preliminary analysis of the residual bottom load transport paths deduced from side scan sonar registrations, a map of the sandwaves on the bank, the first grain-size results of the superficial sediment and a study on the internal structure of the bank. |

The Antarctic Peninsula has a remarkable record of active margin processes, which include subduction with progressive ridge-trench collisions, margin segmentation by major fracture zones, rifting in a hybrid back-arc and sheared plate margin context, fore-arc development and glacial-marine controlled trench fill processes.Several facets of these margin processes both of internal (crustal dynamic) and external origin (climate-controlled) have been documented by a geophysical survey during the Antarktis VI/2 cruise of R.V. <i>Polarstern</i> (October-December-1987).Reflection seismic profiles have been shot over the rift basin of Bransfield Strait, over an elongated sediment-filled trough interpreted as a fore-arc basin, over accretional and... |

A joint seismic exploration programme, carried out in recent years by Belgian, British, French and Danish university laboratories in the southern North Sea and Schelde estuary, has revealed various styles of clay tectonics in Eocene and Oligocene deposits. In this paper particular attention is drawn on the remarkable deformation features observed in the Ieper or London clay, which forms the subsoil of the major part of the Thames estuary and the Belgian shelf sector. Those clay structures have eluded many previous investigations, mainly due to a lack of interfaces with large reflection coefficients. When however a seismic source is adequately tuned, the sum of reflection responses from the many subtle interfaces within the clay sequence may construct an... |

During the ANTARKTIS VIII/5 cruise (December 1989 -March 1990), which was jointly carried out by AWI and RCMG, the seismic grid already available in the Weddell Sea could be expanded with up to 4100 km of high-resolution reflection seismic profiles. The Meso-Cenozoic seismostratigraphic model, originally defined on ODP Site 693 (Leg 113), was extended throughout the existing seismic database along the entire eastern Weddell Sea continental margin. This correlation effort provides some closer time constraints on different stratigraphic units elsewhere in the Weddell Sea, a.o. within the Crary Fan depositional system. A major unconformity (WO4) reflects important erosive and tectonic events at the Meso-Cenozoic boundary, which could be... |
