U-series age patterns obtained on reef framework-forming cold-water corals collected over a nearly 6000-km-long continental margin sector, extending from off Mauritania (17 degrees N; northwest Africa) to the southwestern Barents Sea (70 degrees N; northeastern Europe), reveal strong climate influences on the geographical distribution and sustained development of these ecosystems. Over the past three glacial-interglacial cycles, framework-forming cold-water corals (Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata) seem to have predominantly populated reefs, canyons, and patches in the temperate East Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Above 50 degrees N corals colonize reefs in the northern East Atlantic primarily during warm climate periods with the biogeographic...

Carbonate mounds of the Moroccan Mediterranean margin: Facies and environmental controls ArchiMer
Terhzaz, Loubna; Hamoumi, Naima; Spezzaferri, Silvia; Lotfi, El Mostapha; Henriet, Jean-pierre.
Sedimentological and geochemical studies of boxcores from the Brittlestar Ridge I and Cabliers carbonate mounds, along the Moroccan Mediterranean margin, show that sediments are composed of cold water scleratian corals and micritic mud, muddy micrite or muddy allochem limestone matrix, outlining seven different facies that can be attributed to “cluster reefs”. The mixed siliciclastic/carbonate sediments have been derived from both extra- and intrabasinal sources. Extra-basinal sources may be the geological formations outcropping in the Moroccan hinterland and Sahara, the latter including corals and associated bioclasts. Sediments were transported by wind and rivers and redistributed by bottom currents and local upwelling. Our results confirm the role of...

Environmental setting of deep-water oysters in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Van Rooij, David; De Mol, L.; Le Guilloux, Erwan; Wisshak, M.; Huvenne, V. A. I.; Moeremans, R.; Henriet, Jean-pierre.
We report the northernmost and deepest known occurrence of deep-water pycnodontine oysters based on two surveys along the French Atlantic continental margin to the La Chapelle continental slope (2006) and the Guilvinec Canyon (2008) The combined use of multibeam bathymetry seismic profiling CTD casts and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) made it possible to describe the physical habitat and to assess the oceanographic control for the recently described species Neopycnodonte zibrowii These oysters have been observed in vivo in depths from 540 to 846 m colonizing overhanging banks or escarpments protruding from steep canyon flanks Especially in the Bay of Biscay such physical habitats may only be observed within canyons where they are created by both...

Cold-water coral habitats in the Penmarc'h and Guilvinec Canyons (Bay of Biscay): Deep-water versus shallow-water settings ArchiMer
De Mol, Lies; Van Rooij, David; Pirlet, Hans; Greinert, Jens; Frank, Norbert; Quemmerais-amice, Frederic; Henriet, Jean-pierre.
In 1948, Le Danois reported for the first time the occurrence of living cold-water coral reefs, the so-called "massifs coralliens", along the European Atlantic continental margin. In 2008, a cruise with R/V Belgica was set out to re-investigate these cold-water corals in the Penmarc'h and Guilvinec Canyons along the Gascogne margin of the Bay of Biscay. During this cruise, an area of 560 km(2) was studied using multibeam swath bathymetry, CTD casts, ROV observations and USBL-guided boxcoring. Based on the multibeam data and the ROV video imagery, two different cold-water coral reef settings were distinguished. In water depths ranging from 260 to 350 m, mini mounds up to 5 m high, covered by dead cold-water coral rubble, were observed. In between these...

Première exploration in situ de la dorsale médio-Atlantique au sud de la zone de fracture Atlantis (29"06'N-43"1l'W) ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Tivey, M; Cannat, M; Gente, Pascal; Henriet, Jean-pierre; Juteau, Thierry; Karson, J; Lagabrielle, Yves.
During the Kanaut cruise of the submersible Nautile and its mothership Le-Nadir (15 November-16 December 1992), one dive was devoted to the detailed study of a specific area of the neovolcanic ridge of the MAR around 29-degrees-06'N and 43-degrees-11'W. This study emphasizes the importance of the juxtaposition and the stacking of hundreds of small volcanoes in the construction of a neovolcanic ridge and confirms the general observation made from multibeam and side-scan sonar data. The very large magnetic anomaly associated with these massifs favours an extreme freshness.

Affleurements des roches profondes de la croûte océanique et du manteau sur le mur sud de la fracture Kane (Atlantique central) : observations par submersible ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Cannat, M; Gente, Pascal; Henriet, Jean-pierre; Juteau, Thierry; Karson, J; Lagabrielle, Yves; Mevel, Christophe; Tivey, M.
The aim of the 20 Nautile dives of the recent Kanaut cruise was the study of the Kane Fracture Zone from its intersection with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge up to 80 km to the west. The dives have been conducted along four massifs located along the southern wall of the fracture valley. The flanks of the massifs consist of slightly tilted peridotites, gabbros and basalts, which have been exposed along normal and strike-slip major faults. No dike complex similar to that observed along the ZF Vema was observed The observed sections show pervasive cataclastic deformation and greenschist-facies metamorphic overprint.

The Holocene occurrence of cold water corals in the NE Atlantic: Implications for coral carbonate mound evolution ArchiMer
Frank, Norbert; Ricard, Estelle; Lutringer-paquet, Audrey; Van Der Land, Cees; Colin, Christophe; Blamart, Dominique; Foubert, Anneleen; Van Rooij, David; Henriet, Jean-pierre; De Haas, Henk; Van Weering, Tjeerd.
U-series dating of constructional cold-water corals is a powerful tool to reconstruct the evolution of corals on carbonate mounds. Here we have investigated the time framework of corals such as Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata on five different mound settings of the eastern North Atlantic (on Rockall Bank and in Porcupine Seabight), sampled at variable depth and location (610-880 m water depth). We have found that the past 11 ka reflect a period generally favourable for coral development. We further determined local mound growth rates and identified mound surface erosion (framework collapse) during times of active coral framework construction. "Local" vertical mound growth rates vary between less than 5 cm ka(-1) and up to 220 cm ka(-1). We interpret...

Therese Mound: a case study of coral bank development in the Belgica Mound Province, Porcupine Seabight ArchiMer
De Mol, Ben; Kozachenko, M; Wheeler, Andy; Alvares, Hugo; Henriet, Jean-pierre; Olu, Karine.
High-resolution seismic profiles, swath bathymetry, side-scan sonar data and video imageries are analysed in this detailed study of five carbonate mounds from the Belgica mound province with special emphasis on the well-surveyed Therese Mound. The selected mounds are located in the deepest part of the Belgica mound province at water depths of 950 m. Seismic data illustrate that the underlying geology is characterised by drift sedimentation in a general northerly flowing current regime. Sigmoidal sediment bodies create local slope breaks on the most recent local erosional surface, which act as the mound base. No preferential mound substratum is observed, neither is there any indication for deep geological controls on coral bank development. Seismic evidence...
