Variability and productivity of meiobenthos in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, R.; Vincx, M..
The composition and density of meiofauna in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea are essentially similar to those over large spatial scales. However, the impact of pollution from the Western Scheldt river is clearly reflected in a decrease in diversity on all taxonomic levels. Nematodes are the only animal group that survives in normal or even greater abundance, albeit it with lower diversity. Total meiofauna production is estimated at 1.5-2.0 g C m-2yr-1 and equals or even greatly exceeds macrofauna production in the area.

Harpacticoid copepod community structure in two North Sea estuaries in relation to pollution OMA
Van Damme, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, R.; Vaeremans, M..
The harpacticoid copepod assemblages of two estuaries in the Netherlands, the Westerschelde and the Eems-Dollard, are compared. Both estuaries have similar physical characteristics but the Westerschelde is much more polluted than the Eems-Dollard. Harpacticoid copepod assemblages in both estuaries are similar in terms of species composition. However, there is a striking difference in quantitative characteristics : the highest annual averages of density, biomass and diversity in the Westerschelde are below the lowest annual averages in the Eems-Dollard estuary. Because both estuaries are extensively monitored, data concerning many possible causes of this difference could be compared. It is argued that it is the high load of heavy metals in the Westerschelde...

Meiobenthos of the central Arctic Ocean with special emphasis on the nematode community structure OMA
Vanreusel, A.; Clough, L.M.; Jacobsen, K.; Ambrose, W.; Jivaluk, J.; Ryheul, V.; Herman, R.; Vincx, M..
We investigated the abundance of the meiobenthos and the biomass and community structure of the nematodes in the central Arctic Ocean along two separate transects during 1991 and 1994. Meiobenthos abundances ranged from < 100 to 600 individuals per 10 cm², in the same order of magnitude as in other oligotrophic areas of the world's deep ocean. Nematodes were the numerically dominant meiofaunal group at every station. Nematode biomass ranged from < 1 to 48 µg dry weight per 10 cm². A combination of water depth and latitude explained 55% of the variability among stations in nematode biomass and 67% of the variability of total abundance, implying that both vertical and advective fluxes are important sources of food to the meiofaunal communities. The...

Subtidal meiofauna of the North Sea: a review OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, R.; Vincx, M..
The present state of knowledge on North Sea subtidal meiofauna is discussed. From an ecological point of view, mainly the hardbodied meiofauna taxa Nematoda and Copepoda have been studied to any extent. A short review of relevant taxonomic studies of these groups is also presented, together with a list of the known North Sea nematode and harpacticoid species.

Deep-sea meiofauna communities in Antarctica: structural analysis and relation with the environment OMA
Vanhove, S.; Wittoeck, J.; Desmet, G.; Van den Berghe, B.; Herman, R.; Bak, R.P.M.; Nieuwland, G.; Vosjan, J.H.; Boldrin, A.; Rabitti, S.; Vincx, M..
The metazoan meiofauna in the region off Kapp Norvegia, Antarctica (Weddell Sea: 71°S, 12°W), was collected from depths between 211 and 2080m. Total meiofaunal abundance ranged from 815 to 5122 ind. per 10 cm² and total biomass from 126 to 966 µg dwt per 10 cm². Nematodes dominated the samples (range 83 to 97%) followed by harpacticoid copepods, polychaetes and kinorhynchs. A typical skewed length frequency distribution was obtained with most nematodes in the 0.4 to 0.6 mm size-class. The meiofauna communities were primarily influenced by bathymetric depth and food availability (e.g. organic matter and microbiota), which in turn are suggested to be directly related to phytoplankton blooms and associated sedimentation pulses. Standing stock and distribution...

Production of <i>Nereis diversicolor</i> O.F. Müller (Polychaeta) in a shallow brackish-water pond OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, R..
A <i>Nereis diversicolor</i> population inhabiting a shallow and landlocked brackishwater pond in Belgium has been studied over one year to estimate its production. This population reproduces from May to December with a peak in August. Total numbers vary between 5,000 and 17,000 individuals/m², the total standing stock lies between 13 and 39 g dry weight per m², with a mean of 24 g dry wt m-2. Individuals grow linearly over long periods of time, although slower when they get larger. Production was calculated by determining the weight-specific growth-rate of the different size-classes in the populations; production in the year 1975-1976 was equal to 61 g dry wt m-2 year-1. The...
