Do MILC Program Payments Affect Milk Supply Response Across Regions of the U.S.? AgEcon
Herndon, Cary W., Jr.; Davis, Brandon L.; Parkhurst, Gregory M..
This paper assesses the impact of the milk income loss contract program on U.S. dairy producers. The Milk Income Loss Contact (MILC) program was created through the 2002 farm bill, which financially compensates dairy producers when domestic milk prices fall below a predetermined Boston Class I trigger price. MILC payments were made to eligible dairy producers/farms on a per cwt basis at a rate equal to 45 percent of the difference between the trigger price of $16.94 and the Boston Class I milk price. In the analysis, the 20 major milk-producing states were analyzed to determine if MILC payments caused a milk supply response to be different across these states. By dividing the U.S. into states, this will give a better understanding of production decisions...

Financial Analysis of Implementing an Anaerobic Digester and Free Stall Barn System on a Mississippi Dairy Farm AgEcon
Denley, Jonathan; Herndon, Cary W., Jr..
The installation of an anaerobic digestion system and a free stall barn on a Mississippi dairy farm is only feasible with the presence of a cost-share plan. A 60% cost-share plan is the minimum amount of support a farmer must receive in order to install both facilities.
Tipo: Conference Paper or Presentation Palavras-chave: Anaerobic digester; Dairy farm; Cost-share plan; Farm Management.

Estimating Willingness to Pay for E10 fuel: a contingent valuation study AgEcon
Bhattacharjee, Sanjoy; Petrolia, Daniel R.; Herndon, Cary W., Jr..
In this study, we measure willingness to pay for E10 fuel by US consumers employing a contingent valuation technique in a simultaneous latent variable equation framework. The simultaneous equation framework helps us to understand the way consumers' perceptions about ethanol are developed and influence their respective buying behavior.

MERGERS, ACQUISITIONS, JOINT VENTURES, AND STRATEGIC ALLIANCES IN AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVES AgEcon
Hudson, Darren; Herndon, Cary W., Jr..
A recent merger "wave" has occurred within the economy, including the agricultural sector. Some research has been conducted on publicly traded companies, but there is little information available on merger activity within agricultural cooperatives. This paper presents the results of a recent survey of agricultural cooperatives and attempts to identify major trends in merger activity within cooperatives.

Does the MILC program Affect Milk Supply Response in Individual States of the United States? AgEcon
Herndon, Cary W., Jr.; Looney, John Mark, Jr..
The 2002 Farm Bill instituted a first-ever countercyclical milk price support program known as Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC) program. Analyzing variables (cattle numbers, milk price, etc.) using regression analysis, this study found that MILC was statistically significant, but often had negative impacts, on milk supply response in individual states.

USING A COTTON FUTURES OPTIONS CONTRACT STRATEGY TO ENHANCE PRICE AND REVENUES AgEcon
Herndon, Cary W., Jr.; Cleveland, O.A.; Isengildina, Olga.
Government program changes and increased price volatility are causing cotton farmers to manage more price risks. A "harvest strategy" which sells cotton at harvest, purchases an at-the-money July call options and exercises this contract eight months later is a strategy which takes advantage of potential future price increases.

Construction Cost Sensitivity of a Lignocellulosic Ethanol Biorefinery AgEcon
Busby, David P.; Philips, Andrew L.; Herndon, Cary W., Jr..
The technology has been developed to convert feedstock with cellulose content into ethanol. However, ethanol produced from cellulosic feedstock is the same as ethanol distilled from grain. The objective of research is to determine the price per gallon of ethanol needed so that producing lignocellulosic based ethanol become economically feasible.

The Impacts of Ethanol on the US Catfish Farm Sector AgEcon
Zheng, Hualu; Muhammad, Andrew; Herndon, Cary W., Jr..
In this study, we estimated catfish feed and farm price reduced form equations. Of particular importance was the impact of the recent increase in grain prices induced by ethanol production on feed cost and farm prices. This relationship was examined using an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. Results show that a 1% increase in corn prices caused a 0.134% and 0.263% increase in feed prices in the short- and long-run, respectively. Catfish farm prices increased by 0.106% (short-run) and 0.211% (long-run) given a 1% increase in feed prices. Between 2004 and 2008, corn prices increased from $2 to $6 per bushels. Taheripour and Tyner (2008) state that of the total increase, 25% was due to US ethanol subsidies and 75% was due to the increase in the...

Will the Mississippi and Louisiana Dairy Industry Survive Hurricane Katrina? AgEcon
Herndon, Cary W., Jr..
The Mississippi and Louisiana dairy industry was devastated by Hurricane Katrina when 400+ farms were severely damaged. These producers face difficult choices between repairing damages (estimated at $120,000/farm) or ceasing operations. An estimated 25-30 percent of impacted farms may quit milking, which reduces the critical mass needed to sustain this industry.
