Assessment of the flow properties of crushed grain products depending on the granulometric condition CIGR Journal
Hoffmann, Thomas.
Several methods were developed to assess the flowability of bulk material. Jenike introduced flowability values toassess the flowability of bulk material like mineral raw material under given loads. A method developed by Carr usesseveral granulometric parameters to describe the flow properties without influence on the load. The aim of the own studywas to evaluate the recommendations of Jenike and Carr regarding to their application onto crushed grain. Thereforemeasurements with grainy and powdery grain products were carried out to determine flow properties regarding Jenike andCarr. Additionally unloading tests with a level model silo were performed to find out the influence of the outlet diameter. The evaluations of the flow properties according to Jenike...

Influence of the grinding method on the flow properties of barley CIGR Journal
Hoffmann, Thomas.
Hammer mills or roller mills are used to grind grain for feed for animal husbandry. The grinding process in hammer mills is based on impact stress on the grain kernels. Roller mills, however, apply pressure and shear stress. The different working principles in hammer mills and roller mills lead to different physical properties of the ground material. The aim of the project was to quantify the physical properties of barley which was ground by a hammer mill or a roller mill. Therefore, the particle size distributions of the ground material were determined by sieving. The particle form was characterized by a form factor. Shear experiments according to Jenike were carried out to determine the flowability. The bulk density was obtained from the quotient of the...

Radiometric density measurement for silage compaction in bunker silos CIGR Journal
Hoffmann, Thomas; Geyer, Sabine; Bittner, Jürgen; Kögler, Robert; Schima, Mirko.
Certain minimum densities should be targeted when storing silage in bunker silos.  However, farmers lack facilities to measure the actual density and then steer the compaction passes.  This study was aimed at developing a measuring device for onsite density measurement.  The basis of the measuring device was a source of caesium radiation with an activity of    37 MBq and a sodium iodide scintillation detector.  The measuring device used the backscattering method.  The source and detector were located in a measuring wheel that was connected with the tractor via the rear three-point linkage.  During measuring passes on bunker silos both the density increase in the case of several crossings and the elastic recovery of the material could be seen clearly.  In...
