Field weed population dynamics: a review of model approaches and applications Organic Eprints
Holst, N.; Rasmussen, I.A.; Bastiaans, L..
Mathematical modelling is a commonly used tool for studying the long-term dynamics of weed populations in agriculture. This was reflected in our review by the large number of scientific papers (134 original publications) and the continuing need to gain an overview over this fast developing field (20 previous review papers were found). In this article, we provide a more comprehensive review than earlier seen, striving to include all relevant publications. Thus, we cover models of the population dynamics of 60 weed species in 40 crops. An online, accompanying database provices an indexed bibliography. Despite the large variation in crops, weeds and geography, the models were surprisingly similar in their approach: structured around the weed life cycle,...

'All models are wrong - but some are useful' - a report from an EWRS workshop on modelling weed population dynamics Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, I.A.; Bastiaans, L.; Holst, N.; Grundy, A.; Melander, B..
A three-day workshop on modelling weed population dynamics partially sponsored by the European Weed Research Society (EWRS) was held in October 2006 at Research Centre Flakkebjerg. 24 participants attended the workshop from 8 countries, mainly Europe and USA. The aim of the workshop was to gather some of those active and interested in the field, i.e. most of the participants had either published papers on weed population dynamic models or had a model under development. By gathering these people, it was our hope to learn from each other and possibly benefit by increasing the knowledge and use of each other's work. The EWRS saw the workshop as an opportunity to interconnect some of the work going on in (at least) three working groups: Weed Seed Germination...

Field weed population models: a review of approaches and application domains Organic Eprints
Holst, N.; Rasmussen, I.A.; Bastiaans, L..
We evaluated models of weed population dynamics based on an analysis of their assumptions, biological rationale, flexibility, documentation, accessibility, demand for parameter estimation and documented validity. We arrived at general recommendations regarding which modelling approach should be applied in order to address different application domains.

Computer model for simulating the long-term dynamics of annual weeds under different cultivation practices Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, I.A.; Holst, N.; Pedersen, L.; Rasmussen, K..
A model is being developed which describes the population dynamics of annual weeds and how it is affected by crop rotation, cultivation practices and weed control. The model aims to predict the development of a certain weed species in order to plan crop rotation and cultivation practices to minimize the risk of proliferation. The model does not predict the exact number of weeds expected to be found in a certain year or crop, but rather the general development over a number of years. The model includes documented knowledge, as well as informal expert knowledge, on seed survival in the soil, seed placement in soil after tillage, seed germination with respect to placement in soil, time of year and tillage, weed development in response to crop competitiveness...
