Incentive Mechanisms for Researchers to Participate in Targeted Interactive Research and Innovation Processes–Beyond Academic Relevance Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Moschitz, Heidrun.
The objectives of this study are twofold. Firstly the objective is to identify possible incentives and evaluation criteria for research organisations and individual researchers that are or can be used in addition to scientific excellence. A further objective is to identify means of strengthening incentives for individual researchers to take part in multi actor research and innovation process-es. In this study, we have developed ten recommendations on the basis of literature analysis and theoretical reflection. They include six potential changes at the level of research policy (P1-P6), and four recommendations at the level of research institutions (I7-I10). For each recommendation we give the following details: a) a short description of the recom-mendation...

Conservation science relevant to action: A research agenda identified and prioritized by practitioners Organic Eprints
Braunisch, Veronika; Home, Robert; Pellet, Jérôme; Arlettaz, Raphaël.
A wide gap between research and practice hinders the implementation of biodiversity conservation recommendations. As subjects studied by conservation scientists might bear little relevance for implementation, surveys have identified and framed research questions relevant to conservation in practice. No attempts to prioritize these questions have yet been published, although it would provide invaluable information for steering practice-oriented research. We surveyed Swiss conservation practitioners with the aim of identifying and prioritizing their needs in terms of useful scientific information. A first inductive survey of a selected subgroup generated a list of relevant research questions that were reformulated to be generalizable to all main Swiss...

Soziale Faktoren der Umstellung auf Biolandbau in der Deutschschweiz Organic Eprints
Home, Robert.
The number of organic farms in Switzerland fell between 2005 and 2009, and has remained stable since then. Several studies show that financial arguments should mean that more farms convert to organic production, which means that other reasons inhibit farmers from conversion. In this study, 24 organic and non-organic Swiss farmers were interviewed with the aim of identifying the barriers to conversion and learning how these have been overcome. The results suggest that the structural conditions for conversion are in place but a range of social factors create barriers. These factors include negative attitudes towards organic farming held by family members; problems with mutual acceptance between organic and non-organic farmers; technical reasons such as fear...

Is there added value in transdisciplinary research? Organic Eprints
Nemes, Gusztav; Home, Robert; Moschitz, Heidrun.
In this paper we present some findings of the SOLINSA, an EU 7th framework research project that aims to identify barriers to the development of Learning and Innovation Networks for sustainable agriculture. Applying a comparative approach in different countries and cultural contexts we address some of the challenges connected to transdisciplinary methodology. Our project takes an action research perspective where researchers diverge from the traditional role of observer and act as change agents facilitating the work of innovation networks. Our aim is to explore how members of the academic community can engage with these networks and through which processes they can have any positive impact. We will present two case studies (out of 17 in total in SOLINSA)...

Video on mobile phones as an effective way to promote sustainable practices by facilitating innovation uptake in Mali Organic Eprints
Sousa, Fernando; Nicolay, Gian; Home, Robert.
• Mobile-phone videos could be accessed by people with limited or no contact with information sources, such as younger women, and video based information was found to be understandable for illiterate farmers. • The use of video on mobile phones is a novel approach to farmer-to-farmer exchange and has great potential for enhancing dissemination programs or specific research and development projects to enable more resilient, inclusive and democratic agricultural information systems. • Of the farmers who had watched one of the videos (N = 148), 60.1 % had adopted at least one of the videos’ innovations. • Farmers who received the videos on their mobile phones shared them via Bluetooth with an average of 6 other farmers, quickly expanding their outreach.

Motivations for swiss lowland farmers to conserve biodiversity: Identifying factors to predict proportions of implemented ecological compensation areas Organic Eprints
Gabel, Vanessa M.; Home, Robert; Stolze, Matthias; Pfiffner, Lukas; Birrer, Simon; Köpke, Ulrich.
The global loss of biodiversity is one of the major environmental threats of our time (Rockstrom et al., 2009) and agriculture is one of the main drivers of the global biodiversity decline (Benton, 2007; Kleijn et al., 2009; Pereira et al., 2010). Agricultural landscapes were formerly rich in biodiversity, which has been attributed to mosaic style landscapes and low-intensity production systems that provided a wide variety of interlinked habitats (Edwards et al., 1999). Economic pressure has led to declining species richness as agricultural production has become more intensive (Robinson and Sutherland, 2002), with an associated reduction of habitat-providing landscape elements (Billeter et al., 2008). Despite the objective of promoting biodiversity, which...

The role of participatory Guarantee Systems for Food security Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Nelson, Erin.
The primary tool for assuring quality of organic products and preventing fraud, and also for promoting commerce, is third party organic certification, which aims to regulate and facilitate the sale of organic products to consumers. Certification plays a role along the entire supply chain and is used by organic producers to identify products that are approved for use in certified production (Fabiansson, 2014), while also serving as product assurance for consumers (Sethuraman and Naidu, 2008). Although third party certification systems play an important role in organic production and trade, they are not always suitable for small-scale operators and local market channels. Third party certification can act as a barrier to entry for smallholder producers...

Cultural and Biological Determinants in the Evaluation of Urban Green Spaces Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Bauer, Nicole; Hunziker, Marcel.
Dramatically increasing urbanization is observable worldwide and brings pressure on space within urban areas as the built environment intensifies. Considerable evidence suggests that contact with nature is important for city dwellers, although it is not known whether residents’ appreciation of the forms of urban green spaces is constant across different contexts. More specifically, it has not yet been shown whether our appreciation of nature is innate and inherently human, is cultural and something that we learn, or is a mixture of both. This article describes an exploratory study consisting of 17 interviews carried out in Zurich, Switzerland. Kelly’s repertory grid technique is used to identify preferred urban landscapes, which were contrasted with...

Evaluating On-Farm Biodiversity: A Comparison of Assessment Methods Organic Eprints
Gabel, Vanessa M.; Home, Robert; Stöckli, Sibylle; Meier, Matthias; Stolze, Matthias; Köpke, Ulrich.
Strategies to stop the loss of biodiversity in agriculture areas will be more successful if farmers have the means to understand changes in biodiversity on their farms and to assess the effectiveness of biodiversity promoting measures. There are several methods to assess on-farm biodiversity but it may be difficult to select the most appropriate method for a farmer’s individual circumstances. This study aims to evaluate the usability and usefulness of four biodiversity assessment methods that are available to farmers in Switzerland. All four methods were applied to five case study farms, which were ranked according to the results. None of the methods were able to provide an exact statement on the current biodiversity status of the farms, but each method...

Psychosocial Outcomes as Motivations for Visiting Nearby Urban Green Spaces Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Hunziker, Marcel; Bauer, Nicole.
High-density urban living means that urban green spaces are important nodes of contact with nature. This study examines expected outcomes that motivate people to seek green spaces in urban settings. A sample of Swiss residents were presented with Shin, Kwon, Hammitt, and Kim's (2005) psychosocial outcomes scale and asked which activities they choose to undertake in nearby natural areas. The most important motivations for visiting nearby green spaces were related to restoration, with social bonding as a desirable side benefit. There were few observable differences between urban and rural residents and level of education attained. Older people are motivated to visit nearby green spaces by the wish to seek social contact while younger people are motivated by...

Methods For Understanding Learning And Innovation Networks To Support Transition Towards Sustainable Agriculture – The Approach Of The EU Research Project SOLINSA Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Home, Robert.
Methods For Understanding Learning And Innovation Networks To Support Transition Towards Sustainable Agriculture – The Approach Of The EU Research Project SOLINSA Transition to sustainable agriculture can be seen as radical innovation, which is driven by various factors. The EU research project SOLINSA looks at the particular role that Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture (LINSA) play in bringing about change. LINSAs respond to the demand for agriculture in transition by developing new intermediary tasks and roles and involving new actors and institutions into alliances for objectives that contribute to sustainability. Acting at the boundaries of established policy networks, LINSAs connect different policy authorities to...

Factors in the decision by Swiss farmers to convert to organic farming Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Indermuehle, Annina; Tschanz, Anna; Ries, Elke; Stolze, Matthias.
Demonstrated economic benefits of conversion to organic agriculture, combined with solutions to technical and production-related problems, suggest that farmers in Switzerland should have converted in large numbers to organic production. However, the number of organic farms in Switzerland has remained virtually constant in the last 10 yr, so it appears there are other factors that influence the decision of whether or not to convert. Several studies have sought to identify the factors that influence the decisions by farmers whether or not to convert to organic, but have found a range of factors that appear to be context dependent, while others can be seen as context transcendent, which makes it difficult to draw generalizable conclusions. The aim of this...

Mit Vielfalt punkten – Bauern beleben die Natur - Jahresbericht 2014 Organic Eprints
Birrer, Simon; Chevillat, Véronique; Graf, Roman; Hagist, Dominik; Home, Robert; Jenny, Markus; Pfiffner, Lukas; Stöckli, Sibylle; Zellweger-Fischer, Judith.

Social network to inform and prevent the spread of cocoa swollen shoot virus disease in Ghana Organic Eprints
Andres, Christian; Hoerler, Raphael; Home, Robert; Jeorin, Jonas; Dzahini-Obiatey, Henry K.; Ameyaw, George A.; Domfeh, Owusu; Blaser, Wilma J.; Gattinger, Andreas; Offei, Samuel K.; Six, Johan.
The cocoa swollen shoot virus disease is a major factor limiting cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) productivity for West African farmers. The only treatment against this disease is to cut infected trees and replant with disease-free planting material. Research has recommended the prevention measures: (i) cordon sanitaire (leaving 10-m-wide cocoa-free zone around cocoa), (ii) barrier cropping, (iii) using partly tolerant hybrids, and (iv) removing specific alternative host tree species. Here, we evaluate the current adoption of these measures and identify their adoption constraints. We conducted a quantitative survey with 396 farmers in the Eastern and Western Regions of Ghana, held six focus group discussions and hosted a multi-stakeholder validation workshop...

Familiengärten - Biogärten: Ansätze zur Förderung der Ökologisierung städtischer Flächen Organic Eprints
Jahrl, Ingrid; Home, Robert; Tschabold, Jean-Luc; Stolz, Hanna; Lichtsteiner, Stéphanie.

Public perceptions of rural landscapes in land consolidation procedures in Poland Organic Eprints
Kupidura, Adrianna; Łuczewski, Michael; Home, Robert; Kupidura, Przemysław.
A high level of fragmentation of farms exists in many parts of Poland, which leads to inefficiency in farm management and a range of logistical problems. Land consolidation is a process that reverses fragmentation by enabling an exchange of plots of equivalent value between participants. The primary aim of land consolidation is to improve spatial and economic conditions for farming by decreasing the number of separate plots that belong to a given farm, adjusting the shape of plots to enable mechanized cultivation of soil, and decreasing the distance between dwellings and cultivated plots. Contemporary consolidation works, performed in compliance with the principles of sustainable development, enable creation of legaland spatial conditions that allow the...
