Mit Vielfalt punkten – Bauern beleben die Natur - Jahresbericht 2015 Organic Eprints
Birrer, Simon; Bircher, Richard; Chevillat, Véronique; Graf, Roman; Hagist, Dominik; Home, Robert; Jenny, Markus; Pfiffner, Lukas; Stoeckli, Sibylle; Steinemann, Beatrice; Weidmann, Gilles; Zellweger-Fischer, Judith.

Effects of garden management practices, by different types of gardeners, on human wellbeing and ecological and soil sustainability in Swiss cities Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Lewis, Olivia; Bauer, Nicole; Fliessbach, Andreas; Frey, David; Lichtensteiner, Stéphanie; Moretti, Marco; Tresch, Simon; Young, Christopher; Zanetta, Andrea; Stolze, Matthias.
Gardens have effects on the local ecology as well as on the wellbeing of the gardener, but few studies have attempted to study gardens using both ecological and social outcome variables. The aim of this exploratory study is to address this research gap by identifying the characteristics of gardens and the management practices of gardeners that enhance the outcomes of gardening, which we separate into three dimensions: human wellbeing, biodiversity, and soil quality. Data were collected from 18 gardens in Zurich, Switzerland and a typology of gardeners was dentified, which included ‘conservationist’, ‘functional’, ‘minimumeffort’, ‘child-friendly’, and ‘aesthetic’ gardeners.

Assessment of Farmers’ Plant Disease Knowledge in Organic Cacao Cultivation Organic Eprints
Heuschekel, Zoe; Home, Robert; Schneider, Monika; Pohlan, Jürgen.
The Alto Beni region on the eastern foothills of the Andes accounts for 90% of certified organic cacao production in Bolivia and other tropical products for the city of La Paz. In the region more than 2200 households strongly depend on the cultivation of cacao. Cacao is cultivated on small holder farms mostly in diversified agroforestry systems. These systems contribute to both the conservation of biodiversity and the food security of the farmers. An outbreak of the frosty pod disease caused by Moniliophthora roreri in 2011 is now threatening these relatively sustainable production systems. Examples all over Latin America showed the abandonment and elimination of cocoa systems and the loss of biodiversity and local revenues after its attack. Frosty pod...

Methods For Understanding Learning And Innovation Networks To Support Transition Towards Sustainable Agriculture – The Approach Of The EU Research Project SOLINSA Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Home, Robert.
Methods For Understanding Learning And Innovation Networks To Support Transition Towards Sustainable Agriculture – The Approach Of The EU Research Project SOLINSA Transition to sustainable agriculture can be seen as radical innovation, which is driven by various factors. The EU research project SOLINSA looks at the particular role that Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture (LINSA) play in bringing about change. LINSAs respond to the demand for agriculture in transition by developing new intermediary tasks and roles and involving new actors and institutions into alliances for objectives that contribute to sustainability. Acting at the boundaries of established policy networks, LINSAs connect different policy authorities to...

Participatory guarantee systems: organic certification to empower farmers and strengthen communities Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Bouagnimbeck, Hervé; Ugas, Roberto; Arbenz, Markus; Stolze, Matthias.
Participatory guarantee systems (PGS) can provide guarantees to consumers while avoiding the entry barriers of third-party certification. This study investigates farmers’ motivations for, and experiences and outcomes from, participation in PGS. Interviews with 84 farmers from seven countries were analyzed in light of empowerment theory and social process theory. The results suggest that participation in PGS can empower farmers by basing their activities on long-lasting social processes and connection to their communities. Combining tradition and bottom-up collaboration within local level social structures enables PGS to overcome their challenges and ensure their future as an alternative system to third-party certification.

Final Report of the SOLINSA project. Project Deliverable D8.2 of the SOLINSA project (GA 266306) Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Tisenkopfs, Talis; Brunori, Gianluca; Home, Robert; Kunda, Ilona; Sumane, Sandra.
The Final Report outlines results of the Project “Agricultural Knowledge Systems in Transition: Towards a more effective and efficient support of Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture” (Project acronym: SOLINSA). The project was conceived and implemented as a response to the need for identifying new ways of transition from “productivist” practices to more sustainable agriculture and rural development, where traditional institutions in charge of fostering innovation are not always relevant and effective. The EU SOLINSA project proposes a new organisational pattern aimed at fostering innovation for transition. It illuminates the role of learning and innovation in transition processes, explores networks as drivers of innovation...

Cultural and Biological Determinants in the Evaluation of Urban Green Spaces Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Bauer, Nicole; Hunziker, Marcel.
Dramatically increasing urbanization is observable worldwide and brings pressure on space within urban areas as the built environment intensifies. Considerable evidence suggests that contact with nature is important for city dwellers, although it is not known whether residents’ appreciation of the forms of urban green spaces is constant across different contexts. More specifically, it has not yet been shown whether our appreciation of nature is innate and inherently human, is cultural and something that we learn, or is a mixture of both. This article describes an exploratory study consisting of 17 interviews carried out in Zurich, Switzerland. Kelly’s repertory grid technique is used to identify preferred urban landscapes, which were contrasted with...

Social network to inform and prevent the spread of cocoa swollen shoot virus disease in Ghana Organic Eprints
Andres, Christian; Hoerler, Raphael; Home, Robert; Jeorin, Jonas; Dzahini-Obiatey, Henry K.; Ameyaw, George A.; Domfeh, Owusu; Blaser, Wilma J.; Gattinger, Andreas; Offei, Samuel K.; Six, Johan.
The cocoa swollen shoot virus disease is a major factor limiting cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) productivity for West African farmers. The only treatment against this disease is to cut infected trees and replant with disease-free planting material. Research has recommended the prevention measures: (i) cordon sanitaire (leaving 10-m-wide cocoa-free zone around cocoa), (ii) barrier cropping, (iii) using partly tolerant hybrids, and (iv) removing specific alternative host tree species. Here, we evaluate the current adoption of these measures and identify their adoption constraints. We conducted a quantitative survey with 396 farmers in the Eastern and Western Regions of Ghana, held six focus group discussions and hosted a multi-stakeholder validation workshop...

Birrer, Simon; Chevillat, Véronique; Graf, Roman; Hagist, Dominik; Home, Robert; Jenny, Markus; Pfiffner, Lukas; Stöckli, Sibylle; Zellweger-Fischer, Judith.

Pfiffner, Lukas; Stoeckli, Sibylle; Birrer, Simon; Zellweger-Fischer, Judith; Chevillat, Véronique; Graf, Roman; Home, Robert.

Report on the demand for data by end users of organic market data (= Deliverable 1.1 of the OrganicDataNetwork project. Survey of the organic market data needs of end users) Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Lošťák, Michal; Stolze, Matthias.
High quality organic market data is desirable and important for both economic and societal reasons. Currently, important market data do not exist in most European countries, standardization is missing and data are seldom comparable within one country over time and between countries. Furthermore, detailed information on specific commodities is missing. The goals of this report are to identify the needs and demands of end users of organic market data, and to find areas of information asymmetry, which involves undertaking an appraisal of the quality of the existing available data that is used. However, many different data collection methods are currently used and the variety of agencies collecting data in the various European countries mean that gaining a...

Evaluation of a Multi-case Participatory Action Research Project: The Case of SOLINSA Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Rump, Niels.
Purpose: Scholars agree that evaluation of participatory action research is inherently valuable; however there have been few attempts at evaluating across methods and across interventions because the perceived success of a method is affected by context, researcher skills and the aims of the participants. This paper describes the systematic evaluation of participatory action research with 17 European networks (LINSA) as part of a research project titled SOLINSA: Support of Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture. Methodology: Participatory action research was carried out over three years in collaboration with the 17 LINSA using a learning-oriented evaluation that was adapted to SOLINSA. The collaboration was evaluated using a...

The role of participatory Guarantee Systems for Food security Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Nelson, Erin.
The primary tool for assuring quality of organic products and preventing fraud, and also for promoting commerce, is third party organic certification, which aims to regulate and facilitate the sale of organic products to consumers. Certification plays a role along the entire supply chain and is used by organic producers to identify products that are approved for use in certified production (Fabiansson, 2014), while also serving as product assurance for consumers (Sethuraman and Naidu, 2008). Although third party certification systems play an important role in organic production and trade, they are not always suitable for small-scale operators and local market channels. Third party certification can act as a barrier to entry for smallholder producers...

Video on mobile phones as an effective way to promote sustainable practices by facilitating innovation uptake in Mali Organic Eprints
Sousa, Fernando; Nicolay, Gian; Home, Robert.
• Mobile-phone videos could be accessed by people with limited or no contact with information sources, such as younger women, and video based information was found to be understandable for illiterate farmers. • The use of video on mobile phones is a novel approach to farmer-to-farmer exchange and has great potential for enhancing dissemination programs or specific research and development projects to enable more resilient, inclusive and democratic agricultural information systems. • Of the farmers who had watched one of the videos (N = 148), 60.1 % had adopted at least one of the videos’ innovations. • Farmers who received the videos on their mobile phones shared them via Bluetooth with an average of 6 other farmers, quickly expanding their outreach.

The challenges of innovation for sustainable agriculture and rural development: Integrating local actions into European policies with the Reflective Learning Methodology Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Home, Robert.
The linear view of innovation in agricultural contexts is being replaced by systems approaches. Agricultural producers are seen as important actors rather than merely consumers of the technologies that are generated by agricultural research and transferred by education and extension services for subsequent adoption. This new understanding of innovation for sustainable agriculture is however not reflected within the European policy framework, so learning and innovation networks for sustainable agriculture (LINSA) have formed in response. The support needs of these innovation networks are poorly understood which hampers their integration into policy. A participatory action research approach – the Reflective Learning Methodology was developed and applied to...

Studying learning and innovation networks – a conceptual and methodological framework Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Home, Robert.
This paper outlines the main concepts and methodology that the SOLINSA project uses in its study of learning and innovation networks. This project aims to identify barriers to the development of Learning and Innovation Networks for sustainable agriculture (LINSA). In such networks, social learning processes take place, and knowledge about sustainable agriculture is co-produced by connecting between the different frames and social worlds of the stakeholders with the help of boundary objects. Studying such processes at the interface between different knowledge spheres of research, policy and practice requires a specific methodology. A transdisciplinary reflective learning methodology addresses the complex question of understanding learning and innovation....
