In the present paper three new species of the genus Adelophryne from the coastal Atlantic forest in Brazil are described. The species are separated from the two species formerly known from the Amazon forest by caatinga vegetation and a distance of at least 1600 km. A. pachydactylus from Bahia has a reduced number of phalanges in the fourth finger, and large subdigital pads under fingers and toes. A. baturitensis has distinct subarticular tubercles under the toes and a relatively large size. A. maranguapensis has large discs on fingers and toes and is boldly patterned. During fieldwork in Amapá two specimens of A. gutturosa were collected and based on them additional data are provided and some concepts from the original description are revised. Literature... |

During field work in Venezuela and Brazil a difference in call was noticed between specimens of large hylids of the Hyla boans-group. Based on this and on morphological differences, it was concluded that Hyla wavrini Parker, 1936, up till now considered a synonym of Hyla boans (Linnaeus, 1758), should be considered a valid species, of which Hyla miranda-ribeiri Melin, 1941 is a synonym. |

A new species of toad, related with Bufo calamita Laurenti and B. viridis Laurenti, is described from the southern part of Morocco. Combining the data of the available specimens with literature records it was established that the new species probably ranges from the Sous valley southwards to Cape Bojador in the Spanish Sahara. The species seems to be restricted to semi-arid habitats. Tadpoles which probably belong to this species are described. Keys for the identification of adult toads and for the tadpoles are given. |

The genus Andinophryne, characterized by the presence of an omosternum, an externally visible tympanum, elongate parotoids and extensively webbed hands and feet is described from the Pacific versant of the Andes in northwestern Ecuador and southwestern Colombia. Two new species, Andinophryne colomai and A. olallai are described from Ecuador. The recently described Bufo atelopoides Lynch & Ruiz-Carranza is transferred to the new genus. Some comparisons with other atelopodid Bufonidae (Atelopus, Dendrophryniscus, Melanophryniscus, Oreophrynella, Osornophryne, Rhamphophryne) are made and some very tentative remarks on their relationships are ventilated. |

INTRODUCTION The Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie material of Brachyorrhos albus (L., 1758), which had been on loan to Dr. S. B. McDowell, New York, was returned to us with the remark that reg.no. RMNH 48 from Java certainly did not belong to that species. Dr. McDowell suggested it might be an Atractus, and following his suggestion I examined this specimen. It soon became evident that Dr. McDowell had been right and that the specimen did belong to Atractus trilineatus Wagler, a species only known from Trinidad, eastern Venezuela and western Guyana (Hoogmoed, 1979: 275). HISTORY The specimen concerned (RMNH 48) belongs to the oldest part of the collection of the RMNH. It turned out to have been investigated by many ancient authors and it was discovered... |

Study of the type specimens of B. caeruleostictus Günther, 1859 and B. chanchanensis Fowler, 1913, and of fresh material showed that B. chanchanensis is a junior subjective synonym of B. caeruleostictus. Probably it is a member of the B. guttatus group. B. caeruleocellatus Fowler, 1913 is a junior subjective synonym of B. haematiticus Cope, 1862. New material of B. hypomelas Boulenger, 1913 is reported from NW Ecuador, the species is redescribed, and it is shown that this is a valid taxon, not the juvenile of B. blombergi Myers & Funkhouser, 1951 as suggested by Lynch, in Frost (1985). It is doubted whether B. intermedius Günther originates from Ecuador. It probably is a Central American or Mexican species of the B. valliceps Wiegmann, 1833 group. A... |

INTRODUCTION In a recent paper, Lynch & Freeman (1966) discussed the systematic position of a small hylid frog, Allophryne ruthveni, described in 1926 by Gaige from British Guiana. They tentatively placed it in the family Hylidae, because it shows a better agreement with that family than with any other. The material available to them consisted of six specimens, all from "the foothills of the northeastern face of the Guiana Massif" in Guyana (formerly British Guiana). Since a few years the present author has been engaged in an investigation of the herpetofauna of Surinam (Dutch Guiana). During these studies, a fair number of A. ruthveni specimens was examined. In addition to the locality, of most of these the collecting date and some scanty notes on the... |

The study of snaks from the Guianan region got an early start in 1705 when several species were pictured by Merian. As relatively large proportion of the snakes described by Linnaeus originated from Surinam. Interest for and knowledge of this group of animals steadily increased in the 18th and 19th century (80 species known at the turn of the century), but only in the second part of the 20 th century detailed studies of snake faunas from (part of) the Guianan region appeared. No such study for the entire area has been published till now. At present a total of 134 species of snakes, belonging to 159 taxa, is known. Only 19.4% is endemic, the majority (43.4%) belong to species with an Amazonian distribution. Seventeen species (12.7%) are venemous, ten... |

INTRODUCTION During a recent collecting trip, financed by grant W 956-2 from WOTRO (Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research), I spent 47 days (22 August-7 October 1968) on the Sipaliwini savannah in southern Surinam. The Sipaliwini savannah is part of an extensive savannah that covers the watershed between the Sipaliwini River in Surinam and the Paroe River in Brazil. Though the watershed is very low, the waters of Sipaliwini and Paroe Rivers never seem to make contact, as is the case with other rivers on the Rupununi savannah and in southern French Guiana. About one tenth of this savannah is situated in Surinam, the remainder in Brazil (see inset fig. 3). G. Mann (in Fittkau et al., 1968) calls this a tropical wet savannah and... |

The holotype of Testudo vosmaeri Fitzinger, 1826 [= Geochelone vosmaeri] is RMNH 6001. The holotype of Testudo forstenii Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= lndotestudo forstenii] is RMNH 3811. I. forstenii is considered a senior synonym of T. travancorica Boulenger, 1907 because plastral colour pattern, gular measurements, and general shell morphology do not distinguish Indian populations from Indonesian populations. The lectotype of Testudo emys Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= Manouria emys] is RMNH 3808. lndotestudo and Manouria are recognized as separate genera and briefly diagnosed. In order to avoid nomenclatural confusion and conserve current usuage, the pre-Linnaean figure in Piso (1658: 105) is selected as the lectotype for Testudo geometrica Linnaeus,... |
